Congratulations on the next school term. Nice to meet the teachers!! Yes, you need to motivate not punish students for learning a second language. It is not easy to learn a second language.

I love your updates, it's always so exciting!
The way I learnt English btw was by listening and using it a lot. Whenever I made a mistake, someone would correct me and I tried to remember that the next time. Also they taught me some basic grammar and vocab in elementary. Past-present-future tenses, possessive, pronouns, the weather, time etc. Real basic things :)
    I hope all goes well

Maybe start using it more during the day, at home and in school. Do you remember how you learned? maybe you can use the method in which you learned. Learning a new langue is hard and will take time, but the more used around them , the more they will learn it . Don't expect it to be easy, nor quick but hearing it and repeating it , it will happen. And they are young, which will make it easier...

Use a reward method of giving stickers and praise to those who practice using English in school. Also you could have movie and popcorn Friday afternoons/evenings for the pupils who speak English throughout the week. I think this will moti ate many to start practicing the language.
Let the teachers be models and use English at school even when not in class teaching. Good luck!

I teach English as a second language to children whose first language is Spanish. I use positive reinforcement to encourage the kids to speak English at school. If you don’t have a treasure box or something like that, you can even just use a chart with their names and stickers. Please don’t humiliate or spank them. I think that makes kids embarrassed about their first language. I allowed my kids to speak in their first language during recess and lunch and I always told them they were very smart because they know 2 languages and that will make them future leaders! ❤🙌🏽😌I also just remembered other free incentives..lunch with the teacher… and the rainbow club.. The rainbow club is too much to type but maybe you can google it. You can use it for words, letters, numbers, sounds, shapes, etc..

No, No, do not beat the children because they do not speak English, this would be ignorance. Their mother tongue is not English. The teachers should make a conscious effort to communicate with the children in English, simple as that. As a matter of fact, children learn a new language easier and quicker than adults. Beating them would traumatize them, and no one learns when they are traumatized, whether children or adults.
