My grandfather always played this song in the truck, while we were on the way to feed and count the cattle. He died in 2020, and it tears me up inside that I didn't listen to his advice or the advice in this song. I enlisted in the Army when I turned 17, and made a career as a martial arts instructor by 21. It just hit me that I've built a life surrounded by violence, and I could have had a more peaceful life up to this point.
I may be some stranger on the internet, but I just want to say you don’t have to be ashamed of it. I don’t know if such a life means you were fighting just for the sake of fighting. In this song, Tommy waited for a really good reason before fighting, and as a martial arts instructor you’d probably know more than I that learning these skills are so you can protect things - to walk away from trouble when you can, but to make the trouble stop when you need to use force. I’m sure you could still make your grandfather proud if you remember the advice going forward - knowing how to fight, and choosing not to, says a lot more about a person than you might think.
Your life is not a life centered around violence at all. Joining the military is a noble profession and is about more than just combat. As someone who took martial arts for years, as well, I can honestly say that you've done more to PREVENT violence by teaching that than many other people have. It's because I took martial arts that I was able to control my violent impulses and avoid fights rather tahn lash out and start them when people get me angry. you've lead a more peaceful life than you think you have.

These kids and young adults wouldn't understand the kind of love Kenny sings about here. These were the days Dads words and love was the world, His love for His girl Becky? It’s hard to not sin as our father’s did. Especially when we inherit their nature of anger. Every boy, teenage boy, man experienced something like this; bullying, and always wanting to be violent in order to get revenge, But that’s just it. You never always have to fight to defend your pride. You never always have to be the “strongest“ person in the room; I love Tommy’s character in this song. He taught me to fight for what’s right, my honor; and the honor of those weaker than me. To be strong, not compensate for myself, but to be strong for others when they aren’t strong themselves. Kenny is the best man.
@@always_markb No, it is not, First, nobody was murdered, a Rape was part of the story, and the main theme, as a pacifist, they, the Townfolk (untruthfully) labeled him as The Coward of the County, because he refused to figure fight, and yet he proved otherwise. This ballad contains a parable and truism, the Bible tells you to turn the other cheek, "It won't mean you're weak when you turn the other cheek." But sometimes, you gotta fight when you're a Man ( Woman ) You did not understand this song or the moral of it.
This has to be one of the most visual country songs I’ve ever heard. It was released before videos became big in the 80s. Still love it. Contender for favorite Kenny song.
Damn you, Kenny Rogers, lol! Why do I always start bawling when Tommy takes down his Daddy's picture? The line about locking the door is so cool and appropriate. I've always loved that line! Such a simple way for the lyricist to convey that "It's On Now, Mofo!" The guy who said there's no way not to get goosebumps when he turns and locks the door is so right. I get 'em every time.
There’s no way not to get goosebumps when Tommy stops and locks the door. My grandma bumped this in her 8-track player in her car. That record was on every day when she picked me up from school. Pretty sure she was trying to tell me something. I miss her. And Kenny.

I miss my dad so much. I never knew the depth of what a man he was till I had to do prison time in 2009. Dad visited me and said. Listen. Prison is for men. Don't ever think of not doing your time even if they gave you 100 yrs. Do them. I will do as much of them as I can with you. Those words are still in my ears.
May God have Mercy upon his soul. I love you Dad. He passed away Friday 25 2015. I was released May 22nd 2018 to the halfway house and left that shit hole Sept 17 2018 on a 10 yr bid.
He truly was a man's Man.

My entire life has changed since my dad passed and my experience in prison. Hind sight is a valuable tool in life. I do feel it only comes after one had gone through adversities and learned. If there is no learning there is no hindsight clarity.

The gist of this song - - - > stay away from trouble whenever possible but should the time come for you to stand up for those who matter the most to you, never think twice and don't hold back! They don't make music like this anymore❤ ❤
sorry dear but am in Rwanda , i would listen
My mom loved Kenny Rogers and I grew up listening to him and Lionel Ritchie! This was one of my favorite songs by Kenny! RIP MOM AND KENNY

Oh this music is awesome from the vocal, to the Organ plus the Harmonies, i love it so much, so pretty, are you a lover of good music like i do?
That is my favourite song.
A true storyteller - he not only takes you to the scene, but he allows you to see Tommy's world. Songs like this deserve billion of views
These kids and young adults wouldn't understand the kind of love Kenny sings about here. These were the days Dads words and love was the world, His love for His girl Becky? Defending Honor? these young adults are so insecure, they don't fist fight, they shoot or stab ya, the true cowards. They text the girl they are with even when she is only across the table. They love thier phones. These days are gone. But for I ? well I understand where your understanding and emotion comes from.Peace
When my brother was 15 he had no idea what music he enjoyed until I played him this track, and before playing it I told him to listen as tho he was being sung a story.... He's been listening to him ever since!. Fabulous story tellers don't exist anymore unfortunately
@@lemonon7149 not ALL of today's youths are the same... I could respond by saying "all folk over the age of 40 are pompous and ignorant" but I personally don't stereotype a person based on what I'm going to assume was a bad experience with a youth for you? . Next time you see a young person try talking to them and graciously suggest some genres of music you may be surprised, I'm 38 and never been to a rave, I've been to 1000s of rockabilly nights out tho!. Sending you some peace brother, love others as you wish to be loved 💜

This brings tears to my eyes. How can a song be so beautiful and infuriating?
So do I mate
I cry every time I hear this song it reminds me of my son.
It is a ballad many people can relate to.
SON MY LIFE IZ OVER BUT YOURS HAS JUST BEGUN!!!😓
As a dad that line sends me the message “make sure to teach your son all of the things you want him to know before you die”.
It won't u week if u turn up and other cheek

It’s hard to not sin as our father’s did. Especially when we inherit their nature of anger.
Every boy, teenage boy, man experienced something like this; bullying, and always wanting to be violent in order to get revenge,
But that’s just it. You never always have to fight to defend your pride. You never always have to be the “strongest“ person in the room;
I love Tommy’s character in this song. He taught me to fight for what’s right, my honor; and the honor of those weaker than me. To be strong, not compensate for myself, but to be strong for others when they aren’t strong themselves.
Kenny is the best man.
This song is about rape and murder
@@always_markb
No, it is not, First, nobody was murdered, a Rape was part of the story, and the main theme, as a pacifist, they, the Townfolk (untruthfully) labeled him as The Coward of the County, because he refused to figure fight, and yet he proved otherwise.
This ballad contains a parable and truism, the Bible tells you to turn the other cheek,
"It won't mean you're weak when you turn the other cheek."
But sometimes, you gotta fight when you're a Man ( Woman )
You did not understand this song or the moral of it.
2025 anyone 😁😚🔥🖐
This man was a legend. He got a special seat in heaven.
Fer sure ! He is still singing in Heavenly places.

I miss her. And Kenny.

My dad used to listen to country music. So I grew up listening to this and other country hits....in Brookyn, NY! Always loved this song...and Gambler.
You had a wise grandma.
My theory is this: The guy on the train in The Gambler is the dude whose wife left him in Lucille. He is also Tommy and Becky is his first love.
I see what ur saying you could be on to something. Gambling gave Lucille’s ex some advice who later ends up being Tommy dad who dies in jail.
My dad showed me this song when I was little. "You coulda heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and blocked the door..." still gives me goosebumps.

Great wisdom in the song..."walk away from trouble if you can" But I believe one should fight it when it comes to you or persists!
usually depends on the circumstances. a lot of times its wiser to walk away to avoid further trouble and harm. you could win a fight but you'll still have a black eye, meanwhile you can walk away and mind your day
