Jumbos Sent To The Desert: Will Two Young 747-8s Get Scrapped?

  • April was a sad time for two Boeing 747-8s. Under completely unrelated circumstances, two different and unconnected 747-8s were both sent to Pinal Airpark in Marana Arizona- one day after another. Pinal is a site most often associated with being a long-term storage site- or quote-unquote ‘boneyard’ for aircraft.

Scrapping a plane with only 42 hours on the airframe? What a waste.

Any scrapping is a waste as long as the aircraft is still flyable which in most cases is the case...

I agree what a waste of resources, I agree it is VERY EXPENSIVE to buy and operate these big beautiful birds but surely a better use could have been found for these planes, that BBJ for example could have flown with the president of United States of America 42hour airframe is still very new or another for a famous celebrity, if not a reconversion to cargo plane can also be done.

@Clayson Antoons Hello Clayson! Yes you are right about the material components of the 747-8 wings but Carbon Fibre is Not the reason why the 787s have that dramatic wing flex. If Carbon fibre was the reason, then the A350 which also has all Carbon wings would flex too in an upwards sweep just like the 787s….. but the A350’s wings are stiff in an almost horizontal fashion even when in flight. The dramatic flex of the 787 was an Engineering feat introduced by Boeing and specially built into the 787s (mind you the 777-200 & 777-300s all have aluminium wings but they flex considerably too in flight but not as dramatic as the 787s)….Boeing tends to build a level of wing flex into their aircrafts.
Take great care and stay safe 👍🏼

I will be stunned if the freighter is not picked up by another cargo operation. We already know that the last couple of 747-8F are being assembled at Boeing so there will not be any more of them. Given the unique loading capability, I cannot see this being the end of the line for that aircraft. If it stays in storage and is parted out, I cannot help but think that the owner is demanding an unreasonable sale price.
The other 747-8 may have a harder time finding a home. However, it is worth noting that the original plan to replace the two VC-25A - Air Force One planes was to have 3 VC-25B based on the 747-8I platform. Even though there have been many cost concerns with the VC-25B program, the Pentagon may be interested in this aircraft. They already acquired 2 planes that had never been delivered to the original buyer. So, it is possible they might want to get this plane.

The cargo plane is all about the records. If the full records are available or enough to get the aircraft recertified and insured it will almost definitely be back in service. Otherwise it will be casualty of war.

@@hewhohasnoidentity4377 You may be right, but there must be at least some records otherwise the aircraft would not have been able to get clearance to fly at all. Yes, it is possible to obtain one-time ferrying authorization. But, there still needs to be a minimum airworthiness in these cases.
Given the age of the aircraft, I question whether there would be sufficient demand for parts in the near term. Ultimately, it sounds to me that the actual owner is not being reasonable in an effort to find the aircraft a home.

My guess is the freighter won't be scrapped unless the documentation is missing (then it's screwed), instead they're just setting it aside for a little while. Even if there is demand for such aircraft now, the lease is probably still contractually obligated to the Russian operators even though their use of the aircraft has been revoked due to the war. Probably they'll have some period of time keeping it at the ready to return to them if the war ends and leases to Russians can resume, but if that doesn't happen eventually it will find a new home.

Pure conjecture, but I assume that if an airliner is converted to a business jet, many of its features become either redundant or surplus to requirements, but if built as a business jet, are they fitted in the first place, so the airframe/equipment may need significant and expensive re-fitting before it can be converted for airline use?
However, business is business, and once the components have more value than the whole, it's fate is pretty much determined.

There will be a scramble for capacity, with a matching increase in freight charges will happen. Global business logic is too short-sighted, and cashiering aircraft & capacity will be viewed as a failed idea.
