We just did this, both ways, Feb 2023, with a 2 wheel drive SUV. There is a route with no ford, but Google doesn't get it right. Westbound is tooth-jarring but fairly easy; the worst uphill is paved. Eastbound, the steepest is not paved. There are two spots where you must get some momentum before you start up or you will stop with tires spinning on the loose gravel before you reach the top. (we had to back down once) 1) I'm glad we had a rental car. I would never do this to my car. 2) It's an hour of terror. Wife couldn't sleep that night. We're not going to do it again.
Hey Dennis, I have heard that the way to Drake Bay is not longer under construction anymore and that all bridges are finished now. So the heavy part is the way from Drake to Playa Rincon de San Josecito? I am thinking to book 5 days at Poor Mans Paradise Lodge and to go there with my 4x2 (small SUV) on my own. The accomodation told me that there are still 2 small rivers to cross but it shouldnt be a problem. I’ll go in mid April. What do you think? Is it possible or better the boat?
