  • One of my traditions was to see The Hunchback of Notre Dame - A Musical Adventure at the Disney-MGM Studios each year on Jan. 6, Topsy Turvy Day. When that closed down September 2002 I did other things on Topsy Turvy Day, like watch the movie or visit the characters at Epcot and say, “Happy Topsy Turvy Day!” This 2006 home video is a visit to the France pavilion at Epcot to say hi to Clopin and Esmeralda. They are inside the Plume et Palette shop. My interaction with them was not recorded since camcorders back then were big and bulky, and it would be awkward, but I did film them interacting with the people in line in front of me.
The early 2000s Epcot Times Guide lists “Characters from Disney Classics” in France from 12:30-6:00pm (“intermittently”). In France this usually meant Beauty and the Beast characters like Belle and Beast. Every now and then you would get Clopin and Esmeralda. The character greeting countries listed in 2006 were Morocco, France, and the United Kingdom. Later in the decade more countries were listed. After the 2000s decade it was rare to see Hunchback of Notre Dame characters anywhere at Walt Disney World. Claude Frollo would appear for Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party each year. At special events, like Moonlight Magic, Hunchback characters will sometimes appear.
Esmeralda. Disney Dossiers: Files of Characters from The Walt Disney Studios by Jeff Kurtti (ⓒ2006) says: “Esmeralda is a bit different from other heroines. She’s physically stronger and tougher, yet because she herself is an outcast and has been discriminated against, she has the capacity to sympathize and relate to Quasimodo as no one has before. Esmeralda lives the life of a Gypsy, and when she dances the coins of admirers fall at her feet - and the hearts of men are filled with desire. When one day she danced into danger, only the walls of Notre Dame could save her from certain death.” She’s voiced by Demi Moore and Heidi Mollenhaur is the singing voice.
Clopin. Leading the gypsy people in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Clopin does an impressive job narrating the movie through song and wit. While singing “The Bells of Notre Dame” he displays a vast knowledge of Quasimodo. During the Feast of Fools Clopin seems to notice the mysterious bell ringer lingering around and attempts several times to get Quasimodo up on stage to compete for the King of Fools competition. This does not end well for Quasimodo. Clopin sings several songs in the movie and is shown at different times throughout. He performs plays for the children in Paris, leads the gypsies, and gets captured by Judge Claude Frollo.
History of the Feast of Fools. Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame tells about the Feast of Fools on January 6, 1482. During the middle ages in southern France this was historically a festival when people would elect a fake Bishop, Archbishop, or Pope. The lower and higher rolls in the church would switch and church formalities would be satirized. There’s not a lot of historical detail from that time period speaking about the Feast of Fools, and some believe that writers who told about it embellished the practices. The Council of Basel in 1431 condemned the festival as well as the theological faculty of the University of Paris in 1444.
“Topsy Turvy”. In the 1996 Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the song “Topsy Turvy” is sung by Clopin (Paul Kandel) and the Chorus. Alan Menken wrote the music with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. In the song the commoners of Paris are encouraged to stop what they are doing (looming, milking, farming), close the churches and the schools, and join the Feast of Fools. This is a day to break rules, release the devil in us, go crazy, shock the priest, and mock the prig. A prig is a very rigid, self-righteous person who follows strictly to rules and forms. Dross (garbage) is gold and weeds are a bouquet. Kids today would call this Opposite Day. Bums and thieves come in from French cities like Chartres and Calais. It is held on the sixth of “Januervy”. The crowds in this song were CGI, based on six people multiplied with changing skin tones, hats, clothes, and facial features. The finest girl in France, Esmeralda, dances during the festival. Captain Phoebus likes to watch her. Frollo is watching in disdain from his Frollo-mobile. Then there’s the crowning of the King of Fools. Whoever makes the ugliest face wins, and Quasimodo gets the crown because his ugly face is not a mask, it is his real face. The people celebrate. The beer is never stoppin’. It’s a time to pop a popinjay (a conceited person, or one who dresses and acts extravagantly). That’s what we learn during the mad and crazy, upsy-daisy, Topsy Turvy Day song. After that the crowd turns on Quasimodo, and things are not as jubilant. The lighting in the scene slowly turns reddish.

Sadly they only come out for special Disney events. Last year Esmeralda and Phoebus came out for sweethearts Nite at Disneyland. The last time I met Esmeralda and Phoebus with Clopin was in 2019 for 90’s Nite. Frollo is actually aloud to come out during Halloween time but he’s only in the parade. He’s my favorite Disney Villain.

Thanks! Yeah, Hunchback was rare. Beauty and the Beast was more common in France.

It was rare. It is usually Beauty and the Beast characters at France. And normally outside, not inside.
