What a great entertaining watch and listen Matt, full of belly aching humour (as always) and packed with far from useless information 👌The filter failure was a bit of a bugger but the Osprey pack a great success. I love my Osprey Atmos 50 Litre, so comfy. Thank you for the very generous mention sir. How anyone can walk past a trig without extending the courtesy of a fondle is beyond me 🤔😳? Love the Ordnance Survey socks and Tom and Jerry T shirt. It sounded like Morecambe seafront at the beginning with the gulls and the weather did get bad, really bad but you survived despite Mrs Maff T UK not being able to pick you up. A great effort Matt, inspirational in fact. What a place. Paul (Fellow Trig Saddo 😁).

I loved that walk but the night was awful
The next time I took that tent out with the mods in a storm the tent performed amazingly well far beyond its three-season rating.
You don’t get many up there on those hills as the terrain is hard going at best and you’re going to get wet feet doing that walk in normal conditions I was lucky and had a month of dry weather prior my visit …. Ps I've lost my socks lol… will 100% go back up there again.
i think folk who walk past trig points and dont "fondle them" lol are masochists, they have to be there is no other explination 🤣
Thank you for the great comment Paul, stay safe mate regards Matt

I've checked out the Forest of Bowland numerous times Matt. It's really wild and populated by Eagle Owls. I know this is the trough of Bowland but I presume it's in the area. I enjoy your camps mate - they're always informative and lots of fun. This was no different. I reckon the one bit of kit that came out tops in this was the Osprey pack. Sod the filter - that's a wash out. The pack though. Thumbs up! Good going on this stormy one. All the best. Mark

Yes Mark the Trough and Forrest of Bowland are pretty much the same place and its a tough old place to live a mix of Dartmoor and Brecon, really pleased with the pack I have to figure out now what pocket im going to put what into :-) I moved to a part of the world where i have a great playground on my doorstep and like you Mark im going to enjoy it as much as i can. But not with that water filter i lost the love when it failed and i know that is something you will understand. see you on your next trip mate regards Matt

Almost another aircrash on that hill Matt...you flying away in your tent...Jeez that was windy AF, good to see that you grabbed the Osprey bergen though, quality gear. The MSR filter failure just shows that no matter how much you take care of something, if it goes tits up when you need it most then it could potentially be the end of happy times. Good walk though and pretty, decent views: I especially liked the fact that you could clearly see Blackpool tower, Blackpool...now officially a part of Scotland pmsl.
Our trig point on top of Bar Hill has recently been defaced by some twat who thinks that he's the next Banksy. AND I learned something from watching the video too...I was always under the misconception that "trig" was actually short for "triangulation" and not "trigonometry"...Every day's a school day.
Good vid though mate, keep em comin'!

That tent holds up to some hard weather. It has been rough again around here!! I'm surprised by the MSR filter. They have always been reliable kit. Well I managed to call Wade Mark so i might as well get your name wrong too Bob! LOL Mark the tent stood well not a single peg came out and i have found a cure for the water splash ingress and it was a simple bit of shock cord and a cord stop I did wonder what the second tab was for on the underside of the vent, what i need to do now is get out there and test mk1 adaption The filter is sacked and retired from service with immediate effect and an alternative non working part version will be my next choice

    • @MaffTUK
      @MaffTUK  5 років тому

Really enjoyed the walk and with the wind being so strong I'm not surprised i got some water through those vents but I was honestly devastated at losing the love from my MSR mini works filter, I've looked after that thing as if my life depended on it (because it does!) and for it to fail like that, I can never trust it again. Its gone into retirement at two years old. I'm gutted Mr Wawhiker and now looking at filters with less or no moving parts. The only thing I take from this is it failed during a short break and not something more demanding lucky me in a way, I've looked to see if i could find anyone else with the same issues and noticed the big brother the guardian is having structural problems and failing too.
When i got home i stripped the entire thing down looking for the fault, i could not find one, after soaking the filter for an hour or two i put it all back together and it worked fine......?...... so I have no idea what the problem was and I am waiting for a reply from MRS...... I bet they tell me the filter was simply clogged ....NOPE, NO WAY i even had a coffee filter on the end to filter out the finer bits of silt.... that's it, my moan is over and thanks for listening lol 👍 hope you and coop's are well regards Matt

I would probably email MSR/REI just to see if they can help, you never know what you will get unless you have a go. Anyway, take care my man, and sort the cider fest out!!! ATB Dave 😎

For quilts, there is a guy on fleabay called blueskylavender that makes them - not sure if i like the look of them. There is also a Polish company called cumulus, no import duty etc. Not seen any video reviews on cumulus yet. I plumped for another Hammock Gear topquilt, waiting for it to arrive and it's been just over a week from shipping. I think this time I'll get stung, but this should complete my winter and summer setups

Hello Stephen yes mate that was Blackpool tower, as you drive up the motorway (M6) and get right near Lancaster look right and there is a prominent peak that really stands out thats Clougha pike, better to see it coming from kendal way heading south I was recently discussing trig points at work and nobody knew what they were for so i thought it would be a good idea to include it in my next vid, glad you found it interesting, regards Matt👍

Could've told you there's nowhere to camp on clougha pike. Went over earlier in the year so much low cloud needed to use map on phone to find paths. I can't do 1st weekend in August but I know a lad who can and he's only in morecambe if you want someone. You need some purification tablets in your 1st aid kit as a backup!

Nothing wrong with a kelly kettle Stu, but you will need to carry your fuel /timber but fun to use and great for winter as you have a little sneaky fire going on, just for heavens sake dont use it in your bivvi lol just be mindful they do take a bit of messing about and as long as you dont mind that you will have an excellent peace of kit that will last a life time.

To be honest I think it’s healthy to occasionally face issues and having things fail.
It makes you question your choices and research the market for new technology.
I’m primarily subscribed to UK based YT channels. I do so because I want to know what my own countrymen are thinking and doing.
It’s enlightening and interesting to watch other people from other places but if I’m honest about it it’s often not relatable due to conditions.
As it were, I myself am in the market for a new filter. Nothing wrong with my current one (Hiker Pro) but I wanted to see if there’s something smaller, lighter and/or better than its point two micron rating.
Came across a video by Hounds of Howgate and in a reply to something I said he said that anything with too many moving parts seems risky to him.
I think what you’ve experienced in this video is a demonstration to that to his point.
Perhaps all the straw form filters are inconvenient but if all else fail you can at least use them as a straw.
    Something to consider.
Perhaps even to carry one just as insurance.
I’m currently looking at something called Grayl Geopress. They have two models and the one I’m considering is actually not the lighter backpacking one but rather the heavier one.
It’s 450g which is indeed a lot but there are many benefits to it:
    1. It is a bottle in itself so space wise you will have a saving on the account of not having to carry another item.
    2. It doesn’t have any moving parts and although it is hard to operate (very manual) it is fast in comparison to most.
    3. It filters bacteria, viruses, chemicals and heavy metals. It is in fact the only filter to do so in the market (edit: apparently Sawyer S3 does it as well). Its only challenger is the Life Saver and that one doesn’t filter out chemicals and has many moving parts.
The main issue with it is the filter’s life. The backpacking version is good for only 150L and the bigger one (I’m interested in) is good for 250L. Compared to most filters in the market that’s very low indeed.
To my mind, however, it’s something I’m willing to live with. Replacing the filter is 25 quid and it’s not like I’m living in the wild every day of my life so I don’t expect I’ll have to change more than 1-2 filters a year. That’s not a massive hit in my opinion.
If I don’t get that one I think I will buy a straw one. They are not down to point one micron.

Great comment, and firstly thank you for taking the time to write that👍 that filter has worked perfect for me and has been maintained to the highest standard and still failed to operate. when i got home i looked at the filter again nothing visibly wrong with it . the pump was working fine so it was the filter? i soaked it overnight to see if i could flush anything out, nope, nothing came out, nothing blocked, put it all back together again and it worked perfect water was now going through the filter. Strange one but, I have now lost the love and faith in that devise and would not, could not recommend it to anybody as there was no reason that should not have worked for me.... too many parts .... that is always true ... i am also now looking for an alternative and will certainly be getting a straw 100% for back up (1 is none 2 is 1) thanks again for a great and helpful comment regards Matt, 👍

Nice bit of information on trig points,I knew they represented the top of the hill/mountain but nothing else, stupid question alert.. are all trig points the same height ? I would think they would be if there for measuring purposes, feel free to embarrass me if you want ,😁😁😁😁 nice camp btw👍

    • @MaffTUK
      @MaffTUK  5 років тому

Hi Phil, Not a stupid question the important bit is the arrow on the plate on the lower end of the trig point the (bit with the number on) that is the actual height shown by the arrow, the top can varie as you simply take into consideration the height from the theodolite to the arrow so they dont need to be the same height but most were manufactured to a specific size... 👍
