I didn't know you can mix "createContext" with class components like this. I guess it makes sense as "createContext" is not a hook..?

Correct you can use context in both functional and class based components.
In functional components you need to use the useContext(Context) hook/ Context.Consumer
And
In class based components you only have the option to use Context.Consumer
