Just bought a 70 Judge and its a mess. Sat in one spot outside for 15 years and although I bought it for $2,000 I was feeling overwhemled with the project untill I saw this vid. Wish me luck!
And that's from the factory folks! That's music to my ears, as an lover and owner of several GTOs over the years! Back in the 70s they were plentiful are my neck of the woods! Have a few buddies that still have theirs! Oh what I would give to go back for say a month, well maybe 6 months! Nothing like a ram air IV! Buddy of mine bought a 69 Judge RA III back around 1977 from the dealership for $1400! It was a trade in and had 64,000 original miles! She was gold with buckskin interior! Still had the plastic on the seats they were never removed!
Absolutely beautiful!! Congrats on the new purchase, definetly a keeper. I think this is 1 of 325 RAIV Judges made in 1970 and how many were black? Ultra rare.
@disorderlyconduct97 the Ram air iv engine was the same displacement as the 3 ie, 400 cubes, but had a hotter cam, special high flowing round exhaust head porting, an aluminum intake, a forged steel crank, higher ratio rocker arms, stiffer valve springs, and a few other internal goodies that gave the ram 4 about 50 extra high rpm hp/torque numbers. essentially nothing from the factory in 69-70 in a ABody car could touch the Ram Air iv in the qtr mile. It was a beast!
Cubic inches will always mute the fender shaking of any cam grind. All else equal (same cam, heads and compression) the smaller displacement V8 will sound more radical than the bigger displacement. Bottom line: a 455 would actually need a little more lift and/or duration than a 400 to get this same sound and fender shaking potential even if the compression was the same as the 400. Best well known example I could give to illustrate? In the 1960s the hot factory cam for SBC was the 375hp 327 Corvette solid lifter cam and it sounded reasonably racy in the original 327. The 302 Z/28 motors got the very same cam and heads. Smaller displacement is less than idea in making ultimate power but for sure the raciest sounding idle by far was found in the trans am series legal sized 302....a size produced though the use of a 327 block bore and a 283 crank stroke. The LT-1 350 that followed on also used the solid lift cam but the profile changed a bit so it's not really and apples to apples comparison but it sounded a little tamer even as it made more power than either the 302 and 327 both. Bottom line? Big engines can sound very racy too but they breath bigger and to get that same sound at idle requires a lot more lift and duration than the smaller V8s do.
My brother HAD a 70 400ci Ram Air IV Judge. He still kicking himself to this day for selling it. My nephew currently has a RA-III Judge. We keep it in the family.
@Towball22 The thing I love most about this car is the interior, somehow it wasnt infested with mice and it is in really good driver quality shape. It still has that old vinyl muscle car smell that reminds me of my dads Roadrunner when I was a kid so when the car is finished the interior is going back in just the way it is.
The original vehicle of Motor Trend did not have any power options at all, however, the vehicle purchased from Al Smith Buick, Raleigh, NC had all available options and still won all class titiles. A lot of people today still can't get it through their heads, 510-ft/lbs/torque @ 2800 rpm is a monster. The 3.64 or 3.90 rear-end gear arrangement made things happen. Also, I might add the BB code Turbo400 helped a lot too. Finally, knowing how to drive your vehicle is #1.
@Towball22 Its a slow road but "Jackie" is coming along ok. Once we got it out of the hole it was sitting in and brought it home we discovered the frame was in really bad shape so we started with finding a donor car with a good frame, blasted it and painted it and slowly started builing on that foundation. I am trying to use all old NOS parts (shocks, front end parts, brake hardware etc..) which is expensive and im a guy on a budget so I figure in about another years time.
You're right for the most part but hate to say it the crank was nodular iron along with the rods, but they could live all day long @ the factory 5800 rpm red line .
@jamcousi9 the smoke aint really blue. but its also probably a little chilly outside too. if it were burnin oil bad, then it would smoke a lot, but the smoke would cloud up a lot more than just puffin at the pipes
@yoyoappled I was just wondering if this particular car has a more radical cam than the RAIV 041. The RAIV also had round port heads, aluminum intake manifold and valvetrain upgrades among other goodies.
It's true that the 70 ram iv Armasteel crank was malleable iron, with enhancements, they are not drop cast poured, but are centrifugal spin cast. Armasteel is less prone to cracking and pounding damage from detonation, and is denser in its basic structure.
@jamcousi9 hey man dont ever give up. my dad had a 70 lemans convertible when he was in his 20s. but he left it on the beach for about ten years where it was supposed to be stored. its ate up pretty bad with rust but it still runs fine. Im going to make a gto clone out of it, orbit orange, and I wont give up for anything. Im 19 now and I hope have it done by my early 20s. Like father like son. It would be cool. Anyways good luck to you
holy crap dude! that sounds amazing, my el camino (when i still had it) sounded like that with cutouts... i hope my gto sounds that good when i cam it out!
My dad bought a brand new 1970 GTO JUDGE ! was the only car we had. Grocerys baseball parctice and to the drag strip and driver home! His was pepper green. That black is FN awsome color on the judge! And even though i was a kid. I dont think his sounded that good lol! But they were a piece of hot rod history. My dad ended up selling his in 1980 for $600.00 And it had some rust but ran fine. He regrets that now for sure!
All that twist and go-go fury made Motor Trend proclaim that the 455 GS Stage 1 is "the quickest American production car we've ever tested." Though as their quarter mile time of 13.38 is half a second faster than any other mag could muster and their zero to 60 time of 5.5 seconds is essentially unbelievable, MT was probably testing a ringer. Which was a very popular GM ploy at the time
They were one of the most radical camshafts ever put in a production V8. Advertised degrees duration was 308/320 (Intake/Exhaust) and utilized high ratio rocker arms for .516" valve lift. 4.33 rear axle ratio was mandatory with the RA IV. 360hp rating was understated and actually produced around 430HP with 50 less cubic inches displacement than the LS6 454 Chevelle.
lars1nyc - How do I get in touch with you regarding Ram Air IV GTO? We are organizing a prestigious Muscle Car display during next years Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California, and I want to extend an invite to have this beautiful car in the display. Last weekend of January, 2018. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
This car really sounds fabulous with the header noise & quiet mufflers. In this case here with an excellent camshaft choice, cylinder head work along with a good static compression produces a great sound without loud mufflers.
Finally, What if GM Cadillac had an Intermediate vehicle entry into the Muscle Car field with their 472 cu. in. or their 500 cu. in. engines with extremely high torque ratings. Now, that would indeed be History to remember. You see, I participated in the Muscle Car madness of the late 60s thru the late 70s & I know from first hand experience. I am the original owner of my precious 1970 pure hell muscle car. Peace!!
It was vastly under rated from the factory at 370 hp. This had to do with GM regulations that stated you couldn’t have more than 1hp listed for every 100 pounds of car weight, so 370 was the listed hp as the car was 3600 + pounds. All GM brands adhere to the rule except Chevy, as the were allowed to violate the rule. The Ram Air is was easily 420 or over on the crank hp scale.
Roger Huntington wrote an article about what these engines actually put out; here is the list: (All are gross hp & torque figures.) Engine------------------Advertised----Rated----------True ------------------------HP @ RPM---- Torque@ RPM-- HP @ RPM Buick 455 Stage 1-------360@5000----510@2800------420@5400 Camaro Z/28 302--------290@5800----290@4200------310@6200 Chevelle 396 L-78-------375@5600----415@3600------400@5600 Corvette 427 L-88-------430@5200----450@4400------480@6400 Mopar 340-4 bbl---------275@5000----340@3200------320@5600 Mopar 440-Magnum------375@4600----480@3200------410@5400 Mopar 440 Six-Pack------390@4700----490@3200------430@5600 Mopar 426 Street Hemi---425@5000----490@4000------470@6000 Mustang Boss 302--------290@5800----290@4300------310@6200 Ford 351-4 bbl Cleveland--300@5400----380@3400------340@5600 Mustang Boss 351--------330@5400----370@4000------360@6000 Mustang 428 Cobra-Jet---335@5200----440@3400------410@5600 Mustang Boss 429--------375@5200----450@3400------420@5600 Oldsmobile 455 W-30-----370@5300----500@3600------440@5600 Oldsmobile 350 W-31-----325@5400----360@3600------350@5800 Pontiac Ram Air 400------366@5100----445@3600------410@560
I know of this for a personal fact of history for the 1970 GS Stage1 from Raleigh, North Carolina first hand. This car and other very fast GS Stage1s were really causing a real stir in drag racing. Remember, with the right combination of engine displacement / vehicle overall weight, transmission (Turbo 400-code BB), rear-end gearing -3.64 and a bruit strength Torque 510-ft/lbs @ 2800 rpm really does make for a real street / track class hell raiser.
all the companies sent ringers to the press. i remember reading about a gto that ran about a 12.8 on bias ply's for a magazine then about a 12 with slicks. pontiac had sent them a car with the RA V between the frame. not tryin to get into a pissin match. just saying most cars that were tested were "hand picked" so i really dont buy any of the old 1/4 times for an out the factory et. hell pontiac sent cars to royal oak for the stage 1 bobcat package for some tests they all did it back then.
I can buy that but you stated in the comment that I originally replied to that the crank was forged, let's just say for arguments sake that it was armasteel which it is not that is still a big difference compared to a forged unit. The only Pontiac engine to ever recieve a factory armasteel crank was the 62-63 super duty 421's
A lot of vehicles performance was altered, even before 1971 when the compression ratio was lowered from an average of 10.5 to 8.5 in (GM). Also, camshaft lift was lowered. Case in point, during the early run of the 1970 GS Stage1, Compression was rated at 10.5 to 1. However, later during the 1970 production run, the compression was lowered to 10.0 to 1. The manufacturing process, engine cylinder bore was more precise than later models due to production tolerances. Core shift was minimal.
this is to all the tin indian heads out there. just thought about this today. do you think that pontiac "shot them self in the foot" by marketing the RA IV at 370hp when the RA III was 366? the RA IV was a $400 option for 4 more "rated" hp. we all know 370 is very modest for the IV. I know GM didnt want to be seen as supporting street racing but it seems to me that not many would pay $400 back in the day for 4 hp. rightfully so $400 was alot back then.
The BB Code 400 automatic transmission is specially built for I know 1970 GS 455 Stage1 Buicks. The internal composition ex.valve body, steel plates, friction plates, shift modulation (higher upshift) is upgraded significantly from the standard 400 automatic transmission. I do believe all GM Special High Performance vehicles had a version of the BB transmission from 1968 thru 1972. There is an ID plate on the transmission, opposite side of vacuum mod valve toward the front of the trans.
R.A.3 was the stock judge motor, R.A.4 had better flowing aluminum heads with round exhaust ports and oval Intake ports, a higher lift and duration cam, stronger valve spring and a higher rise intake mani fold. RA3 factory read line was 5400, RA 4 was 5800. RA 3 had a bigger cam I lift and duration and the d-shaped inlet ports in the heads, which was a big upgrade over the standard RA 400 engine in the non Judge cars
@@MrRDkrock I'm by no means a Pontiac fan, But Aluminum Heads on a 400 Ram Air IV ??? I've Never heard of that, Aluminum Intake Manifold, Yes. But Cylinder Heads, i don't think so.
That Ram Air 4 has a distinct sounding cam. Bad ass car.
You are welcome 😌😘
Just bought a 70 Judge and its a mess. Sat in one spot outside for 15 years and although I bought it for $2,000 I was feeling overwhemled with the project untill I saw this vid. Wish me luck!
Oh my goodness! In love. Show stopper. Your blessed.
As the proud owner of a 1972 455HO I approve this message. Sounds GOOD! Ole Poncho countin em off. 👍👍🏁🏁
That car purrs like cat,so awesome. Thanks for the video

omg that's ridiculous the way that bad boy sounds..damn...beautiful car love it
i come back to this video every day just to hear the exhaust lope. niceeeee
Bad ass paint scheme as well!
Very, very nice GTO.
Absolutely beautiful!! Congrats on the new purchase, definetly a keeper. I think this is 1 of 325 RAIV Judges made in 1970 and how many were black? Ultra rare.
That sounds insane
My ultimate dream car. Automotive foreplay!
My favorite muscle car. When i was young boy. I saw the GTO beat every car that crossed its path.
Sure would love to know what your exhaust system consists of. I also have a 1970 RA IV Judge and I wish it sounded like yours
yeah you're so right, I need to get a second 70 GTO. one for driving and one for taking off some sweet jumps.
The best muscle car built by Pontiac Motor Division 1970 GTO Judge Ram Air lV 💪☝️🔥 !
Really nice car!
You should drive it like it is supposed to be, those cars weren't built to become trailer queens!
What a very beautiful restoration !
Beautiful!
this is my dream car. I'm only 18 still into the old school stuff cause nothing beats old school like old school
The car is absolutly perfect!
such a outstanding peice of automobile wish i could own one
So jealous. This makes me want to mod my 04 even more to be able to hang with that
The top Dog..Sounds great
Nice one of the Best sounding GTO'S ever - what the SD-455 Should have got with same compression etc. :)
Cubic inches will always mute the fender shaking of any cam grind. All else equal (same cam, heads and compression) the smaller displacement V8 will sound more radical than the bigger displacement. The started out as 400s but later in that same year, they dropped 455s in them. That's for the standard GTO, most likely applies to the Judges
There is no greater sound than this...
Same. A '69 or '70 GTO Judge...my dream cars.
My brother HAD a 70 400ci Ram Air IV Judge. He still kicking himself to this day for selling it. My nephew currently has a RA-III Judge. We keep it in the family.

Beautiful Car!!!
@yoyoappled I was just wondering if this particular car has a more radical cam than the RAIV 041. The RAIV also had round port heads, aluminum intake manifold and valvetrain upgrades among other goodies.
Neat judge. Rare ram 4.
It's true that the 70 ram iv Armasteel crank was malleable iron, with enhancements, they are not drop cast poured, but are centrifugal spin cast. Armasteel is less prone to cracking and pounding damage from detonation, and is denser in its basic structure.
What’s kind of mufflers are your using?

Thanks for sharing!
My dream car!!
holy crap dude! that sounds amazing, my el camino (when i still had it) sounded like that with cutouts... i hope my gto sounds that good when i cam it out!
I love big block lunge.
Music to my ears!!
what a fucking beautiful car geez
The factory RAIV cam has to be the most radical cam ever offered on a vehicle sold to the public.
Ever heard of the l88 427?
There’s a tiger under the hood for sure
OOOOOHH YEAH !!!
so... beautiful...
What is the cam
Love it!!- it sounds like it runs on nitro glycerin.😄😄😄😄
lumpy lumpy lumpy lumpy lumpy love!
Elle est magnifique.
thats super sweet
Damn lol i was holding my breath the entire time.
I don't recall the RAIV cam being quite that radical. . .
How did they get in and out ?
We Build Excitement ;)
Just watched the other vid, any reason why this car smokes so much the way it does? Lot of blue smoke
WOW !!!!!
Right ramp was too close for comfort.
@jamcousi9 if you look at it, gto judge is something worth having and i would love every single minute good luck on that prize.
my buddy had a 71 gt-37 black with white "eye brows" above the tires
@jamcousi9 How's the $2k '70 Judge coming along, any photos/vids?
School me on this BB code 400 automatic please. Are all 400's not created equal? Is there a ratio difference between them? Where do I find this code?
WOW O.O beautifull! i will buy

@jamcousi9 I know how you feel, make a list and focus on one thing at a time. Don't start another until the job before it is finished.
I like it but I like the 69 ones better because I hate the strips in the side of the 70's ones

does that exhaust sound like the intro to Van Halen's " Hot for Teacher" ?
I think so.

There is an ID plate on the transmission, opposite side of vacuum mod valve toward the front of the trans.
is that a 4 speed 455? and could someone tell me the difference between ram air III and IV
@jamcousi9 if you do get her fixed up...let's see it!
why did GM ever stop making the Pontiac? what a shame.
