  • One day in Dili, East Timor - flying to Atauro Island with a blocked runway, tuk tuk rides, exploring Dili, an island resort, and more in today's travel vlog.
Thanks MAF for the flight and JDN for the tour (both of which were paid for). Thanks also Barry's Eco Resort for letting me have a look around.
Check out 'Over The Top' to see how I flew myself to East Timor:
    • I flew solo across Aus...

Timor Leste is such a beautiful place and you are correct about the people being so friendly. So glad they enlisted you to assist in promoting their country.
    A couple of interesting facts.
They grow and roast their own coffee and it does taste amazing, such a very earthy taste.
The statue of Christ is the second largest with the one in Rio de Janeiro being the biggest.
There are a couple of 4 star hotels available in Dili.
It’s a very quick 55 minute flight from Darwin (one of the benefits of living in the Top End is easy access to places like Timor Leste).

The proximity to Timor Leste is one of the reasons I keep suggesting to my partner we move to Darwin. Unfortunately he hates the heat. OTH I love heat.

I have some good timorese friends that were exiled in portugal when I was young, and returned when the country became independent again. I miss those guys. Some of the best friends you could ever have.

The new channel is working well. The split between the aviation videos and the travel videos has resulted in 2 good channels. Good to see an usual destination.

To explain the Sebastian Gomez story. He was killed by the Indonesian military in late October 1991 on the grounds of the Motael Church. A group of young resistance activists had gathered there. Sebastian was shot in the confrontation.
Death is a very important part of Timorese culture. When a person dies there are a few ceremonies to commemorate the person. One of these occurs two weeks after the person’s death. I think it called the Mass of the Sweet Flowers. Two weeks after Sebastian’s death, on 12 November 100s of mostly young people had gathered to attend Mass at the Motael Church.
They then walked to Santa Cruz Cemetery, where Sebastian was buried. I think the procession was also protesting the Indonesian occupation. The Indonesian troops lining the streets did not interfere.
Santa Cruz is surrounded by a high wall. When mourners streamed inside the cemetery the Indonesian troops at the cemetery opened fire. When I was on a tour that included the cemetery we were told some of the troops had climbed onto the walls and were shooting from there.
This story may not have made much impact in the rest of the world, however there were a few foreign journalists present, including a cameraman named Max Stahl. He filmed what he could. He then smuggled the video out and released it to world.
This video really brought the brutality of the Indonesian occupation to light, which led to pressure being put onto the Indonesians. That is why the young man said the death of Sebastian Gomez was so important.
Sebastian was 19 at the time of his death. He would have turned 50 this year, had he not been killed.

The shrines on the climb up to Cristo Rei are Stations of the Cross. It is very interesting- the explanation for each station is in Indonesian and Portuguese, but not Tetun, which is the lingua franca and with Portuguese the official language. This is because Cristo Rei was built by the Indonesians.
The Indonesians strongly discouraged the use of aTetun, if not actually banning it being used for public purposes. The one place tetun could be used was in Church. This is one of the reasons the Church became a part of the resistance.
