You may not have to pay tax at all. You may be able to complete a W8 Ben form to have any US taxes this applied.
If the insurance company has already charged tax, then you will need an IT I N, which is a US tax ID to submit a tax return to claim back the tax is taken off you

      Hi Carol
Applying for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in the United States requires you to submit specific documentation to prove your identity and foreign status. Here's a rundown:
      ### Basic Documentation:
      1. **Form W-7**: The primary form required for applying for an ITIN.
      2. **Federal Tax Return**: You need to attach the federal tax return for which the ITIN is needed, unless you meet one of the exceptions.
      ### Supporting Documentation:
      1. **Passport**: The simplest and most comprehensive document to prove both identity and foreign status.
      OR
      2. **Two or more of the following**:
      - National identification card
      - U.S. driver's license
      - Civil birth certificate
      - Foreign driver's license
      - U.S. state identification card
      - Foreign voter's registration card
      - U.S. military identification card
      - Foreign military identification card
      - Visa
      - U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) photo identification
      ### For Dependents:
      - Additional documentation like medical records (for dependents under age 6) or school records (for dependents under age 18) might be required.
      ### Mailing or In-Person:
      - You can mail these documents along with your Form W-7 and federal tax return to the IRS, or you can apply in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center that can authenticate the documents.
It's worth noting that when mailing documents, the IRS prefers original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. The IRS typically returns original documents within 60 days.
Given that ITIN application processes may change, it's advisable to consult the latest guidelines from the IRS or consult a tax advisor familiar with ITIN applications for the most current advice.

To renew an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in the United States, follow these steps:
      1. **Determine if Renewal is Necessary**:
      - Check if your ITIN is expired or will expire soon. ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive years or ITINs with specific middle digits (e.g., 70-88, 90-99) might need renewal.
      2. **Complete Form W-7**:
      - Fill out IRS Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This form is available on the IRS website.
      3. **Gather Required Documentation**:
      - Provide original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency to verify your identity and foreign status. Acceptable documents include a passport, national identification card, U.S. driver's license, birth certificate, and more. A full list is available on the IRS website.
      4. **Submit Your Application**:
      - You can submit your completed Form W-7 and the required documentation in one of three ways:
      - **By Mail**: Send your application to the IRS address listed in the Form W-7 instructions.
      - **In Person**: Apply at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or through an IRS-authorized Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA). A list of locations is available on the IRS website.
      - **Through a CAA**: CAAs can verify your original documentation and submit your application on your behalf.
      5. **Wait for Processing**:
      - Processing time for ITIN renewals can vary, but generally, it takes about 7 weeks. Processing times may be longer if you apply during peak periods or if additional documentation is required.
      6. **Receive Your ITIN**:
      - Once your application is processed and approved, the IRS will send you a letter with your renewed ITIN.
      **Additional Tips**:
      - Ensure your application is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
      - Do not submit your federal tax return along with your ITIN renewal application if you are not filing during tax season.
      - Keep copies of all documents for your records.

Gambling income of residents (as defined by treaty) of the following foreign countries is not taxable by the United States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
Gambling income of residents of Malta is taxed at 10%.
Claimants must give you a Form W-8BEN (with a U.S. or foreign TIN) to claim treaty benefits on gambling income that is not effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business. See U.S. or Foreign TINs, later, for when you can accept a Form W-8BEN without a TIN.

when you file 1040, what form of tax document from Employer do you need to file 1040 ? 1099 Misc or 1099 NEC ? thanks

    • @UK-Property-Tax-Accountants
      @UK-Property-Tax-Accountants  Рік тому +1

When filing a U.S. individual income tax return (Form 1040), the type of form you'll receive from your employer depends on your employment status:
W-2: For Employees - If you are an employee, you should receive a Form W-2 from your employer. This form reports your wages and salary along with federal and state taxes withheld, Social Security taxes, and other information. This is the document most commonly used to fill out the income sections of the Form 1040.
1099-NEC: For Non-Employee Contractors - If you are an independent contractor or freelancer, starting from the tax year 2020, you'll most likely receive a Form 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation). This form will report payments you received for services you provided.
1099-MISC: For Miscellaneous Income - Prior to 2020, non-employee compensation was reported on Form 1099-MISC. Starting in 2020, the 1099-MISC is still used but mainly for other types of miscellaneous income, such as rent or payments to an attorney. However, it's no longer used to report non-employee compensation, which has moved to 1099-NEC.
So, if you're a traditional employee, you'd look for a W-2. If you're an independent contractor, you'd look for a 1099-NEC. If you've got other types of income (like rent), you might still see a 1099-MISC.
Just a side note, if you have a mix of these or receive income from other sources (like dividends or interest), you may have multiple types of these forms to include when you file your 1040.

The two are independent. You don’t necessarily always need an item or a Visa. Equally, you do not need a Visa if you have an ITIN. I would be surprised to hear that the University requires an ITIN as you will not have any taxable income. Once you start earning in December that is when you should get an ITIN. Hello, I am completing the W-7 form and have a question as I am in a complicated situation. I came to the US with a J1 visa for paid Trainee. My wife and I obtained the SSN. Before the J1 expiration, we applied for a change of status to B2. Subsequently, before the B2 expiration, we opened an LLC (50% me and 50% my wife) and applied for a change of status to E2. Now we are awaiting the final approval of the change of status to E2. However, we need to file our company tax return, and we require an ITIN for our 8-year-old daughter. Which option should I select? Option "G: Dependent/spouse of a nonresident alien holding a U.S. visa" (even though we don't have an actual visa but a change of status), or option "H: Other" writing "to be claimed as a dependent on parent's tax return." Any advice? Thank you.

Hello, I wonder if you know; Can a UK sole trader apply for US tax number? I would like to sell one Ebay from UK to US - I think I need this number...

You should not need an ITIN if you are selling from the UK to the US. An ITIN is required if you set up a business in the US

@@UK-Property-Tax-Accountants Thank you. Do you know if I need any other number. P.S> I only sell to the US occasionally. The turnover would be less than £1000/year . Should I still contact the IRS to let them know:?

@qianzheng1387 you do not need an ITIN for non resident aliens. We have plenty of clients on this situation 👍

I'm a UK citizen in London and I need an ITIN. Do I send the IRS only a certified copy (from the US embassy in central London) of my passport with my W-7 form to support my application, even though I see nothing on the W-7 form mentioning any supporting documents? Also, I cannot file a tax return with my the W-7 form because I have never lived in the US and so I haven't ever paid any US taxes. Will the lack of a tax return with the W-7 form be ok? Many thanks for any help.

That now makes sense. You will need to send the W7 form signed and written all in blue to an IRS department. You will need to send in your ID as described on this video
