    Almost 10 years later, and this is probably still the best video on the topic.

    This is so well explained, thank you. I don't understand why they just explain the topic with formulas/graphics. We are trying to understand the World after all, this is so much better. I can see what I'm learning and why I'm learning it.

    Pseudoplastic solutions behave this way because of its solute structure (mostly concentrated polymer solution)
    Polymers tend to chain up and coil
    This causes entrapment of some particles of the solvent
    Increasing the rate of shear will uncoil the solute and liberate the solvent

    Slight correction but an important one: viscosity has to do with internal friction between molecules within the fluid, and not the velocity or "how fast" the fluid moves; viscosity affects speed only qualitatively, as a thicker fluid can still move as fast as a thinner one under the right conditions

    is the ketchup becoming more viscous, or is the force of hitting it just helping the ketchup overcome the friction of the bottle?

    Are we sure viscosity decreases instead of the fact the result is dictated by momentum? You hit the bottle, the bottle is being held by your hand while the ketchup retains momentum and gets out of the bottle (has enough energy to move and it is not retained by anything)

    If I can say something here that could impact someone who is in some type of daily interaction with something like this, that could have potential to make something big happen it would be ..
    Find out which one of these types of things are something that has only recently been discovered and study it, play with it, test with it, sleep with it, shower with it, dream about it, and marry it..
    if you have access to a thing, that nobody in the world has in the past, there is probably a really good chance that if you tried really hard to make something useful from it's unique and rare nature, you would be successful as you would be one of the first ever, with access to the most information ever with the internet, and you could access everything about it from other people's labor..
    Even something as simple as an improvement on other things.. you would make a killing.

    Seriously i dont understand your theory of ketchup being nonnewtonium like really? Honey can get stuck in a bottle to until you put fprce on it havemt you seen that vid of hpw to get ketchup out of a bottle like this really makes me mad could you please make a better explanation or sombody because i really do not believe anybody that says ketchup is nonewtonium please excuse any spelling mistakes or grammar issues

    • @TheSmileyFacedPizza
      @TheSmileyFacedPizza 8 років тому +2

      +Wyatt “Thunder” Fenlason It takes a lot longer to get honey out than ketchup. However, initially, ketchup has the greater viscosity (it can even hold its shape fairly well on a flat surface without spreading, as pointed out in the video). This is because honey's viscosity does not change, while ketchup's decreases. As you shake or squeeze or hit the ketchup bottle, the forces cause the ketchup to become thinner, allowing it to come out more easily. When ketchup is just sitting there, it's like a gel, stiffer than Elmer's glue. Yet it squirts and splatters like vegetable oil.

    • @wyattf.3837
      @wyattf.3837 8 років тому

      +TheSmileyFacedPizza thank you for replying and i have learned recently more about viscosity but a liquid is anything that can really change shape which ketchup can even when not moving it never actually turns solid it just changes viscosity (which I think I have lots of ketchup and have never really witnessed this in real life that I'm aware of) but anyway if it just changes from a high viscosity to a low viscosity it would still be liquid because it can change shape well solids don't have viscosity so yea

    • @galaxyspirals9595
      @galaxyspirals9595 8 років тому

  • @jamesmcginn6291

    Your theory is wrong. H2O causes the hardness, due to surface tension being expressed in three dimensions. The cornstarch is instrumental with respect to causing the surface.

  • @captainamericawhyso5917
    @captainamericawhyso5917 Місяць тому

    Another video that doesn't explain and confuse even more😢. If it was the big force that makes a non newtonian fluid act like that then either you were standing on your feet or running on top of it whould make no difference. A 100kg rock and a 2kg rock they both will sink inside.
