Die Tote Stadt is a true masterpiece that deserves to be in the repertoire of every opera company in the world.

Was also at the first New Zealand performance with Ales Briscein. This music is so beautiful and heart breaking. Thanks for this posting from Berlin.

I prefer the ending where Marietta returns at the end to pick up her forgotten purse. What this says is that the murder of Marietta was purely in his head.

Masterpiece indeed, but underrated ? It's truly become part of the standard repertoire, now. Could you believe it's the opera I've seen the most productions of, all over Europe, in the last 20 years (including this one, at the Berlin Komische Oper) ?

For me, one of the most beautiful operas. The libretto is in a truly surrealistic way based on two conflicts which happened in the Belgium city Brugge at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The cast is doing her stinking best and the decor is ok. A pity is that the tenor is a little bit too light, but as said, he also does his stinking best to keep it nice and has a good voice.
But not so good was the choice not to follow the libretto in the last act. With the corpse of Marietta lying on stage, its difficult to believe that Paul had murdered her only in his nightmare. Lying there how could she, as after Paul has awakened from his nightmare, she comes back for the roses which she had forgotten to take with her a while ago just before Paul's nightmare began.

I prefer it when the end of Act 1, all of Act 2 and the beginning of Act 3 are in his head, and Marietta is not actually date. In dreaming, Paul realizes that the only outcome to attempting to forcibly mold another woman into being Marie only results in the loss of friends, frustration and even death. Waking, he is then able to understand that he should move on with his life.

Saw DTS in Munich with Jonas Kaufmann and Marlo’s Peterson conducted by Kirill Petrenko - a spectacular staging. Something I will never forget. It may still be available on Medici. TV.
