Some people are complaining about Bill's grumbling in the new book. I've read it and although I'm only in my 30s I actually agree with most of his complaints about the way things have changed in the last 20 years. I don't think he's exaggerating at all.
+Andy JS I heard that too but if he is grumbling (a(\) it's no different and no less charming than the first book and (b) everyone should know he just adores and is completely enchanted by GB -- Kindle edition comes out 1/19 but I'll likely grab the hardcover anyway
+Geoff Digweed I saved quite a lot by buying it on Kindle. I actually went back and read the original book after finishing the new book to see if the complaints were justified. Actually there is a fair amount of grumbling in the original book, which some reviewers seem to have forgotten about.
the brutal truth is that Bryson has over the past 30 years seen through the shiny surface of the UK and finally realized that things are not all that great after all.
Bill hasn't "seen through the shiny surface" he has simply made observations in a genial, reasonable way. Great Britain is still a great place to live.......millions of people think it is and want to live here rather than their own country. I am one of them.
You are def a Midwesterner. Your view is interestingly diff than us people raised on East or west coast of America.. love it. It's part of what makes your writing so wonderful
I know when I do visit other South Coast of England I will go off tourist season. I have always loved where trains all the time..so will enjoy grey days
See I have NO desire to visit Lake District. I am in love with the whole length of the South Coast of f England. Plus parts of Scotland. I have only 14% British in me..but it calls to me.
I love you Bill Bryson, but what did you just say? "Keep her?" Thank goodness you don't have to KEEP HER? What does that mean, Bill Bryson? I was going to read your books first to last...please tell me that I should...
It's frightening how footage from 1999 already looks like a bygone era
It looks more like the 80s, probably the camera used

how could you tell if the UK has changed much in the past 20 years when you were only 10 at the time?

09:56 Allow me introduce you to Mr Blair, and much later, Mr Starmer who will in time replace it with party donors and political cronies.

£250,000 p/a is 'comfortable but poor?... what does that make my £13,000 p/a? Me thinks she's in lala land XD.

It's a joke. If you're going to insist on taking it seriously, I'd suggest that you shouldn't read Bill's books.
I have to say if you watch him long enough he is equally self-deprecating.
'Keep' in this sense means to pay her expenses, as in 'a kept woman'. He wasn't going to take her home as a pet.
well dome people are into that ... :P
