  • Welcome back! This video guides you through the step-by-step process of building a compact yet spacious pantry, perfect for small kitchens but adaptable to any space. Ideal for storing a wide variety of items such as spices, herbs, and condiments, this pantry is both practical and stylish. This project uses a mix of half-inch and three-quarter inch plywood as well as solid cherry for the top and trim. For those interested in tackling this project, a complete set of building plans is available for purchase at shopwwmm.com/products/space-s... .
Some of the practical skills, techniques, and considerations you can learn from the video:
    • Design Consideration for Small Spaces: The project focuses on creating a pantry that maximizes storage in a limited kitchen area, showcasing design strategies for small spaces.
    • Material Selection: The video demonstrates the choice of materials, such as plywood for the main structure and solid cherry lumber for trims, balancing cost, durability, and aesthetics.
    • Precision in Measurements: The importance of precise measurements and adjustments, especially when dealing with materials like plywood that may not perfectly align with nominal sizes.
    • Efficient Use of Hardware: The selection and installation of hardware, such as piano hinges for the doors, are covered, showing how to ensure functionality and ease of use.
    • Pre-Assembly Painting Tips: The advantage of pre-painting parts of the pantry before assembly to avoid difficulties with painting in tight spaces later on.
    • Jig Usage for Consistency: The video highlights the use of jigs, like the Kreg shelf pin drilling jig, to ensure consistent and precise placements for adjustable shelving.
    • Trim Work for Aesthetic and Function: How trim work not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves functional purposes, such as covering exposed plywood edges.
    • Shelving Adjustability: The construction of adjustable shelving within the pantry is showcased, offering flexibility in storage options.
    • Door Installation Techniques: Viewers learn a practical approach to installing doors using piano hinges, including tips to ensure smooth operation and proper alignment.
    • Final Assembly and Finishing Touches: The video concludes with the final assembly of the pantry, including attaching doors, applying final paint coats, and adding handles or knobs, highlighting the steps to bring the project to completion.

    Great build, Steve!
I do have a tip for you, though (although you've been doing this far longer than I have).
Before I paint plywood, I smear joint compound (the drywall stuff) on the exposed ply edges, let dry, and then lightly sand w/ 220. Once you paint, you'll never see those plys - they come like butter!!

I just did a quick Google search and found super lite weight and partical board versions of this for $100+. This is a solid wood, well build island that will last decades. Plus in making it yourself, it's something to be proud of every time you use it. Great project Steve.

Solid wood? It’s ply wood. And ply that clearly has lots of voids.

It's going to take double the years and moisture for construction grade plywood to deteriorate as magically as MDF. But go ahead, use baltic birch ply, or solid bubinga, zebrawood, or koa. It's your wallet. It's still a great design, and an achievable project for weekend warriors and mere mortals. Thanks, Steve!

Had I waited a week, I probably would have built mine right LOL! I'm actually using this concept as a drawer. Planning on a small cabinet of these for project specific tools I need near my workbench, just not all the time. Leatherworking tools, as an example. I can pull my "leather working drawer" out and bring it to my bench, then put it away after that project. These will likely be the stand for my band saw as I don't have a lot of accessories for my bnad saw, but it does need a stand - small-sized shop problems... Thanks again, Steve!

I appreciate the extreme closeup at 12:18 so so much. It's so good to know that having a drill hole be slightly off and the driving of the screw pull the pieces slightly apart is normal. • @paulsander5433
    @paulsander5433 3 місяці тому

For the shelf pin slide-out problem, have you considered cutting notches in the bottoms of your shelves to keep them from sliding on the pins? A router will work for round pins, a chisel for flat ones. Each notch shouldn't need more than a few seconds to cut. Then the shelves must lift a little bit before they can slide out, which should be unlikely if they're loaded.
