Some people are thinking Kim is superficial and uninsteresting judging by this interview, but she's actually just a very low key and reserved person who clearly wasn't very comfortable in this situation. I highly recommend reading "girl in a band" because the book offers a great perspective on how amazing her persona and history is.
Luiz- she is totally kinestetic. It’s how she relates to other people, how she processes outside stimulation, and the world that surrounds her. She is deeply physical and feels things like her art and her connection to the world. She comes across as stand-offish and uninterested but what’s really going on is she is having a hard time connecting to people. It’s not on purpose, it’s how she is wired. Someone who is also kinestetic could comprehend, understand, communicate, and connect with her quite easily
WE don't need a lecture Kimmy. You had a great run, go out with class, and don't become an insufferable douche like the rest of the celebrity SJW crowd.
+Myke C-Town lmao I see this and it's the exact conveyance of what I think about it and then I realize your name and that I watched some of your good shit about vinyls and albums and shit 5 hours earlier.
I thought the questions Carrie posed were kinda hard to answer and anyone would've had a hard time wanting to think of answers to them. Listen to this book on Audible. I loved it! I have listened to it several times and her voice is so soothing to me. Thanks Kim, I hope you'll write another one!
Kim Gordon is a visual artist, a vocalist, bassist, mother, writer, sorceress, erotic film producer and starlet of so many lesser gifted production visionary art people, a morning star, a rock star, a mammalian trailblazer, a true friend to friends, model, spokes model, and she'll bury us all!!👻
I met Kim in 91 outside Auburn Mills. I was the only one who noticed her. I could tell she knew I knew who she was, but I said nothing. I didn't want to bug her by saying hello and regardless I was just staring to peak on magic mushrooms. I was playing pinball a few hours later and she came by and I just said a few things and she laughed and was really cool. Back then it was so different. No cell phones fuck all. I miss it. 91-94 in college ruled. Kim is on such a higher level than Carrie here when it comes to explaining the performance art aspect of music.
Cool story. I agree about the wavelength thing here: Carrie is obviously very smart and has her signature witty awkwardness, and came at Kim with all of that intellect. And Kim was just like: "Practice? In art-making, you can call your art "practice," but...you're in your studio and you're developing ideas and you're following a thread of what you're interested in." Boom. NOT the typical or conventional way of approaching a creative medium (hello: it's Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth...), so I wish there was a bit of space to appreciate that statement and her insight.
that was a gooder! right after all their gear got ripped off Thurston: "Uhhh... I don't know why you're all watching us, Roy Harper's playing on that little stage back there?!?!...."
I saw Kim's band Body/Head a few years ago. I was right in front of her at the stage, and she was wearing the same shoes she has on here. Can't forget those shoes. At the end of the set she came into the audience and was standing right next to me singing with the mic cord wrapped around her whole body.
interesting to hear Kim's thoughts on Soundcloud. showing her age there a bit. obviously its lo-fi and they are "dabblers", but it IS music in 2015, you wont get physical media or big production playing guitars as a new band these days. was hoping she'd be a little more progressive and in touch with the "why's" of Soundcloud.
Coldacre Well said, I agree. In my comment below (or above), I think that 3 decades of being signed to a label may have warped her perspective a little.
Nah, Sonic youth have always been advocates of the DIY aesthetic, in art and music . If you read between the lines, I think the idea of uploading songs rather than actually playing live and slinging physical media could be seen as a cop out. Especially using someone else's fame to push your music. That being said, don't a large percentage of bands have some sort of SoundCloud presence?
The most interesting parts in "Girl In A Band" are the descriptions of her early life in LA. The relationship with her brother is beautifully written, almost enchanting. Many other parts of the book look like a therapy journal, badly edited (there are many repetitions, the most evident one is right on the last page). Kim Gordon is, anyway, an icon. Maybe an unaware one.
Kim Gordon is rad. I don't know why there is so much hate about her interview. She has put out so much art and music through the years. What have any of you done for culture? She actually made a difference in the world and made people feel good. Again, what have any of you done? Carrie Brownstein is indeed an underrated guitarist. Both of those bands kick ass live. Instead of criticizing artists, maybe do something yourself first. She can say whatever the fuck she wants. She's earned it.
most of the people in to comments tend to think she's a feminist and just get triggered at the fact she keeps expressing her own opinions about women in music and bands overall. I dont care, she's still badass at singing and I'm happy she's got a second career in art.
soundcloud is just any other way you can release your music , you can do it phisically thru cds , cassette , and also online and get to know like minded people and just a different way to explore and discover contemporary music
OMG this is BRILL!! A few min of nervousness and then the real discussion that women do. I loved being on-stage with these musicians back in the day/90"s because they are so f*ckN cool. Carrie and Kim are trying to explain how musicianship is secondary in terms of stage presence for a Rock Band, regardless of gender or politics or whatever. But I was there as a fan and a anthropological participant and a teenage boy and I just thought they were both bands were f*ckN GREAT ROCK N ROLL. I wish I got to see the WHO. But I am so happy I got to see Sleater K and Sonic Youth when they were rocking out with their cocks out.
I highly enjoyed Kim Gordon's book (and Carrie Brownstein's too). Both these women are remarkable and multi-talented. Gordon may be shy and private, I don't know, but this was her book tour and the interview would have been better if she was more willing to speak.
I love both Kim and Carrie, but Kim's comment that Soundcloud artists sounds the same is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Maybe having been signed to a record label for the past 3 decades has skewed her perspective?, but Soundcloud (and Bandcamp) give un-signed artists an opportunity to get their music out into the world. Every kind of music I can imagine is represented on Soundcloud! Perhaps it's an ignorant comment (I hope so). Love you Kim!
Corporal Cal i agree with you, and would like to add that a lot of soundcloud artists tend to release music to keep listeners interested so it tends to be rushed, it'd be easy to generalize it being an on and off user of the internet
+Stephen Randall That's because Kim and Sonic Youth came from the era of Underground music everything done analog not digital, music was passed around from word of mouth or small bits in magazines etc etc.. Older bands could have benefit a lot with soundcoud, internet their music would of reached more fans. Plus, these bands I listened too, can have that second comeback. You know the term Reunion. Today's bands do have an edge over the older bands thanks to the internet, but some do rediscover these older bands thanks to their older siblings & **cough** parents.
I was a Sonic Youth fan but after watching this interview I have no interest in reading Kim Gordon's book. She didn't seem to enjoy being interviewed, and every answer she gave was strained until the last 20 minutes of the Q&A. Carrie Brownstein is awesome. Psyched to read her book.
Kim made that super difficult for Carrie...Jesus. The awkward giggles are not what I would have expected from either of these strong women. Why even write a book and/or schedule a promo conversation (with an audience) if it's this difficult or uncomfortable for Kim to discuss it??
+Erika Wagner Why are they "strong" women? Kim does what she must to make a living. Somehow, that's considered some super achievement. I love her and Sonic Youth, but I would not call he "strong". I don't mean to disparage her accomplishments. Golda Meir - strong. Mother Theresa - strong. Hillary Clinton - strong. Kim Gordon - laughing hysterically here at who knows what, and giving answers often inaudibly, that are often not even complete sentences.
+Krishtie Mofazzal Didn't say she was "weak". But not "strong", though. She's not a dumb bimbo, though, absolutely not, in case you further take things out of context.
Carrie Brownstein comes off as the 'am I hip enough to impress Kim Gordon?' interviewer. She looks pretentious and out of touch. I was particularly annoyed by her labeling of people as 'soundcloud artists.' I suppose she's forgotten the early DIY days of Sleater Kinney and the struggles of artists who don't have label support. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, but this took her down a couple of pegs for me
20:30 Okay, so... I know that I may be seriously criticized. If this video was made at the time it was published, this would make Kim over 60 years old. She is super attractive!
I don't think Riot Grrl had that much to do with it...it was the bands, since the concept moved so far away from what Riot Grrl originally was. If by Riot Grrl you mean girl bands who know stage lighting, sound, and recording from another grrl band, then that should be inspiring.Or you could be referring to the West Oly neighborhood bands in the nineties--go Sleater-Kinney! Kathleen and I knew about that band because we lived off Sleater-Kinney highway for a year. You couldn't be more local if you named yourselves Smithfield Cafe.
Ah, the Smithfield. No one ever seems to remember it, or the Tropicana. We had so much fun at the time that we didn't even think of documenting those places. Cheers from a native.
Love Kim Gordon...hate this interview! Wanted to tell Kim that more polish is expected of our icons...But then I listened to Tunic again...and realized Kim should always be herself!
in no way can Richard Hell and Sid Vicious be compared, imo. Richard could and did write catchy, memorable, melodic basslines and great lasting songs. Sid did not. He was a stand in for Glen Matlock, who we could compare to Hell as a writer and player. the only realm in which Hell and Sid can compare is in the spikiness of hair, dress and heroin intake, of which Hell introduced first, and in that case Sid still cannot hold a candle to Hell. as far as SoundCloud goes it's just a place for artist to put their work without the giant commercial machine being involved. Think of it as from farm to table.
+bigbigsound I can't tell you how turned off I am after hearing this interview. I get it - she's "low key", but come the fuck on. Is there ANYTHING she is sure or confident about, after 3 decades or more as an artist. I am close to the end of the interview, and I've enjoyed it, but she seems like she doesn't care about anything, really - just without passion. I don't know.
Kim Gordon's book tour interviews only confirm what I've been suspecting about her for years: she's neither smart nor interesting. Sorry to be a hater but I'm just calling it as I see it. Her reputation has always amounted to being a symbol of good taste more than anything else, and her inept interviews only reveals the lack of substance and ideas in her work, her connections to art world elites notwithstanding.
ERIC VITALE I highly recommend her book if you really want to get a deep insight into her personality and career. I'm sure you'll change your suspections once you've done it.
lhrttz I've read it and I agree with you. She has considerable insight into herself and why she is the way she is, and when you get done the book you come away a pretty good idea/sense/ of and feeling for another human being. imhop. That might have happened by accident, but probably not, because it is hard to accomplish.
In all seriousness, I think the awkwardness is just that this is two friends who decided they would accept the offer for one to interview the other and it turned out to be an even stranger experience to interact with one another in the rigid format of "interview" than they thought it would be.
36:39 Sorry kim, i don't care that you were in sonic youth, you are imagining that. You can't form an opinion after listening to one artist. I know what you're trying to get across, but it's like any other music listening experience, you have to dig for the good stuff. Jesus give it a chance.
5 mins. in, & so far & they haven't broached any topic yet of slightest significance or interest whatsoever, just lame attempts at frivolous chit chat & supposed humour, as both (especialy Brownstein) seem afraid to actually begin Q & A, choosing to opt for nervous schoolgirl giggling (Brownstein again) instead. What a waste of time, so far ...11 mins. in now & they've not yet talked about any of the book's content. They're stuck on secondary aspects, specifically the process of writing the book, instead of the book's actual contents! WTF kind of interview is this? An atrocity. Outa here.
Well, as far as I know, Brownstein got this gig because of her resume in other fields, and probably hasn't even done very many interviews. Also, Kim seems a tough nut to crack, and it may very well require a real pro to get the interesting info we all know is in there, but probably needs to be teased out by a pro.
neurochunk I don't know if it's fair to judge musical skills and artistic contributions based on verbal skills and interview poise. It's always a conundrum when your favorite artists seem stupid or act like jerks then people with no music chops whatsoever come across in an articulate manner.
Liz R i've saw just about every band thats mattered in this time, met quite a few of the people involved, don't get me wrong Sonic Youth were a great band but when you hear people in the audience guffawing over Kim and Carrie when they're just half stoned and not even funny...the whole Thurston thing showed that the supposed alternative scene is as full of middle aged men having mid life crisis as anywhere else...
Some people are thinking Kim is superficial and uninsteresting judging by this interview, but she's actually just a very low key and reserved person who clearly wasn't very comfortable in this situation.

I wonder why millenials and specially centenials find everything awkward...
THANK YOU for putting this one all online.
Two of my favorite figures in rock together. There is so much talent on that stage. It would be so cool to see them do an album together.

I love when the band plays a song for 40 minutes
God, that was a painful hour. I felt so sorry for Carrie.

Very interesting thoughts by both ladies on the concept of "musicianship" and "being the girl in the band".

have nothing but huge respect for these iconic, awesome, incredibly boring women.
33 minutes in Kim asks Carrie what is a Soundcloud artist?
Carrie says a band w/out a record label. Hear Kim go "yeah, Uh, yeah."

hey so... what was that??
Kim's wearing the same shoes as she wore at the 2014 R&R HoF Induction ceremony. No biggie, just seeing if anyone else noticed.

Carrie Brownstain
36:39 Sorry kim, i don't care that you were in sonic youth, you are imagining that. You can't form an opinion after listening to one artist. I know what you're trying to get across, but it's like any other music listening experience, you have to dig for the good stuff. Jesus give it a chance.
SONIC awkwardness...
Love both these women. Talkative hipster v. Don't give a fuck artist.
5 mins. in, & so far & they haven't broached any topic yet of slightest significance or interest whatsoever, just lame attempts at frivolous chit chat & supposed humour, as both (especialy Brownstein) seem afraid to actually begin Q & A, choosing to opt for nervous schoolgirl giggling (Brownstein again) instead. What a waste of time, so far
...11 mins. in now & they've not yet talked about any of the book's content. They're stuck on secondary
aspects, specifically the process of writing the book, instead of the book's actual contents!
Hermesacat - fuckin relax dude and enjoy the journey. They were hysterical, beautiful, and quite interesting
Sounds like Kim has no clue about anything whatsoever. SY clearly is|was Thurston and Lee and not about her.
neurochunk That's what I've always said. I usually skipped over the Kim songs haha.
neurochunk I don't know if it's fair to judge musical skills and artistic contributions based on verbal skills and interview poise. It's always a conundrum when your favorite artists seem stupid or act like jerks then people with no music chops whatsoever come across in an articulate manner.
hp123434 same, I didn't mind heather angel, and her daydream nation songs but that's it
Let's play a game called count the, 'um' . Um....
stupid intro to THE Sonic Lady 👏🏿
So much sycophantic laughing, i've spent the last 25 years in this "scene" if you'll pardon the term, so much fake bullshit...
mysecretworld Give it another 25 years, you'll come around.
