    🌍 Geographic and Historical Context
Lanslebourg is a charming village located in the Savoie region of France, at the base of the Col du Mont Cenis. This historic pass has been a key communication route between France and Italy for centuries. The road winds through the Alps, reaching an altitude of 2,083 meters (6,834 feet) at the pass. On the Italian side, Mont Cenis is a small, quiet village in the Piedmont region, known for its serene landscapes and Alpine beauty.
    📚 Historic attractions
The Col du Mont Cenis has a rich history, dating back to Roman times. It was a crucial trade and military route, and Napoleon Bonaparte used the pass during his Italian campaign. The area is also known for the Mont Cenis Dam, one of the largest in Europe, which created the amazing Mont Cenis reservoir.
    🎉 Fun Fact
Did you know that an incredible, now-abandoned mountain railway was built along this road in the 19th century: The Mont Cenis Fell Railway, which operated from 1868 to 1871, was built to facilitate communication between Italy and France during the construction of the Fréjus Rail Tunnel. Operated by the Mont Cenisio Railway Company, it ran from Susa to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne. The line used the Fell system with a central rail to handle the steep gradients. Despite its short life, it carried 100,000 passengers, including notables such as Empress Eugenie of France and the Prince of Wales. The railway carried Royal Mail parcels bound for the British Indies before boarding in Genoa. After its closure, the equipment was reused in Brazil and Switzerland.
