Vowel modification is that key, that has unlocked SOOO much of my improvements, that have been noticable to others. Along with tonal control, etc.

As I've been learning to use my purple register more I actually do see how it feels more natural to the way my voice wants to operate. I am not a very expressive person and my singing voice reflected that until I began to learn these principles. I am actually working on covers for songs I never would have touched in the past.

Would finding and perfecting this mechanism a good way to "free" the voice and THEN go back to developing a beefier sound, similar to your second demonstration but in a healthy, sustainable way? I love the heavier tone of singers like Dio, Russell Allen and Dino Jelusick.
Damnation game was a big record for me when it came out - largely because of Russell's voice. Dino is very similar. I wouldn't attribute 'weight' to either singer - nor DIO. Look at how easy it is for Dino to sing without limit in his higher range - much of the 'weight' you're talking about is simply style choice within the tone, and also grit. Context is also key here - the voice within the songs is presented to you in a punchy way. Is there a difference between how Chris Cornell was singing on Louder than Love and Bad Motor Finger? No - but why does LTL sound more like Led Zeppelin, and Badmotorfinger sound more like a metal record? The vocals are treated differently - listen to the badmotorvision VHS and how thin Chris Cornell actually sang those songs without being slammed by a compressor. Wildly different from the record, right? Smashed with compression, phrased in a way that accentuates a wider vowel within the range and just punchier songs than say, a John Farnham song - but not actually sung any heavier (there's a reason Jorn loves Farnham). So, yes, if I was to go for the faux classic rock style like Ronnie Romero, Dino etc - I'd use this balance to find a higher range in full voice, keep the vowel pretty wide, and I'd run a pretty heavy compressor(s) over the whole thing. @@FoundationVocalStudio Damnation was Russell's first SX album and he already rocked - but his voice just got better and better from there (for my personal taste). You're right - "weight" isn't the right word here, but vocal editing apart, these singers have a "full", "open" or "warm" tonal qualities even in live settings, when compared to a lot of other rock singers. I'll definitely try approaching highs in your method though - and when I'm comfortable, will try to modify and teak to see if I can get closer to their style. Hi Kegan. I'm unsure if your method solely benefits this 'rock' style of singing that you often refer to such as all the singers you mention. I love 'Free' and 'bad Company', as the way Paul Rogers sings 'All Right Now', well who wouldn't be hypnotised by that voice. But that isn't the style singing I'm trying to develop for my voice, for the songs I want to sing. Though I do want to get that dynamism and strength and range these singers have, that you mention. i.e. the way you sang that except at 5:30sec is more my thing. I thought you sounded great there and not strained, and I think you were reaching an A4 (I'm unsure of the demarkation of the ranges. Either A4 or an A5) Was that solely a chest voice you were using in this example at 5:30sec. Did you reach a A4? with chest voice?. If so that is impressive and this is the sort of singing I'd like to reach.
Hey Jude! The A4 at 5:38 is obviously pushed, strained and completely unsustainable for me - it's just out of reach. Context is also important; have you heard Bowie sing Lady Stardust? His voice is akin to mine in terms of type and lower range as a baritone, and I'd say he actually sings it brighter, thinner and sharper than I'm doing here. I personally don't like that unnaturally pushed tone (like I'm trying to make up for some instability in my masculinity by yelling), and to the listener it's also not likely your favourite singers are going for this tone either. So, to answer your questions. I was slightly flat of an A4 there, and no, that's not really my full chest voice as I was also modifying the vowel, so you can call that my upper mixed voice in my natural range/tone if you like. My highest note in pure chest voice is probably a C4, maybe D4 if I'm reaching a bit. However, f you want to push like that, I'm unfortunately not your guy. If you want to sing in that range for many years to come in a consistent, reliable, healthy and 'better' way, then perhaps my approach might be for you. Best - K

Listening to you sing this excerpt I didn't hear anything unnatural about it, though I guess this is a subjective reaction one has to any of the arts. Admittedly yes you did sound 'pushed' and slightly out of your range during the 2nd phrase of this example, but in the 1st phrase where you were singing around the B4 - D4 I think?, you sounded unstrained to my ear; though obviously you know how you felt while singing. When you said in that example that you were 'feeling uncomfortable', I was surprised. Anyway you've given me something to think about. I'm actually not out to sing A4's in a chest voice. For one that would be impossible for me no matter how much attention I gave it. I just used it as an example as this was the highest note you hit in this example. No , what I want to achieve is to be able to sing in an open warm chest voice as high as I can, and if I could hit a E4 or G4 that would be absolutely fantastic as these are the higher range of notes I usually include in any melody I may write in the songs I write. But most of all I don't want to be limited to any one technique, I also love the sound of falsetto given its applied in a way I like. I'm going to use an example here that may sound 'camp'; excuse me if I sounded as if I was pre-empting what you may think but anyways. So, put in an analogous way a song could be seen as a cake, it could be a 'lemon' cake, a sponge cake, a wedding cake, pavlova, whatever. And with all these cakes you have different icings ontop, with different subtle flavours in different amounts. A song may be thought of like this. You could have a heavy 'Mud' cake or a light tangy lemon cake where they all have their own ingredients and flavours and if done right, 'wow', where it could only have been that one cake that was suitable for that occasion. So I would most like to get as many techniques under my belt as possible. I'm also not a natural singer and struggle with it but hearing some peoples opinions of late, including your own, gives me a sense of optimism that if you just allow yourself to grasp whats going on in its most simple way then you may very well be able to get on top of it. My biggest issue is my larynx choking me out anywhere above an E4. Thanks Kegan. Hey. Long time no see. I always like watching your new stuff. What you are saying here is what actually confuses me right now. I worked really hard blending the register but every time I hit the chest ceiling (E4) I switch to head voice. Even though I’m becoming pretty good to do the transition smoothly it always sound like 2 different voices. Now you are saying using the head voice mechanism without actually going into head voice. This is very confusing to me. I just can’t figure it out. 🤷♂️

I sang in my younger years and my range is not high. I love music and have a great ear and i gotta say this sounds horrible. You must work within your natural range! Lower the key but if you struggle people will know and its not good.
I'll be sure to lower the key of all songs I'm singing from now on, I simply wasn't aware of how horrible I sound - but now I know! Best - K
