About five years before this Lester and The Chicago Art Ensemble were to play at my college and he was there setting up and wondering about dinner. I had no idea who he was, but I bought his meal and sat with him talking about the blues and warning him that the crazier and wilder the Ensemble played, the more we would dance to their music. He laughed and said no one dances to our stuff. Ha! We danced for four hours to the wildest most freedom-baked jazz I've ever heard. Thanks Lester!
Lester Bowie announces everyone by name beginning at 22:22. David Peaston (organist), Martha Bass (singer), Malachi Favors (bass), and Ari Brown (sax). He says a few names I cannot make out, presumably the male pianist and the drummer. I'm pretty sure the woman playing piano was Fontella Bass (who was married to Lester Bowie at the time).
