NDP has turned its back on BC's forestry sector, says Kevin Falcon

“This is an urban government driven by an urban premier with an urban radical agenda.”
That’s what the leader of the official opposition, Kevin Falcon, had to say about the NDP’s forestry policies and regulations.
Falcon made the comment in an interview with NowMedia following the announcement of a temporary mill closure in Merritt, which is reported to impact about 100 jobs.
In a separate statement to NowMedia, the Ministry of Forests said the temporary halt on operations at Aspen Planers was caused by the “many challenges” facing the forestry industry in North America, including low market prices for lumber and high interest rates.
However, Falcon says this is not the case.
“It's simply not true. It is directly related to government policies. There's no doubt about it,” he said.
“What is needed is a government and leadership that recognizes there has to be changes in the forestry sector.”
Falcon also pointed to policies that he claimed are slowing down permitting in forestry.
NowMedia asked what a BC United government would do to make the province more “hospitable to the forest sector.”
Falcon said it wasn’t just the forestry sector that was suffering, it was the “entire natural resource sector,” and the BC United would give those sectors “certainty.”
“They've got to have the confidence of knowing that if they make a decision to invest capital in British Columbia they have some reasonable certainty that permits will be approved and that they will be able to get into doing what they need to do within a timely way,” Falcon said.
