Taking a look at the Hattons Class 66

  • In this video it's a bit different. I take a look at a pre-production sample of the forthcoming class 66 from Hattons.
It looks to be very promising indeed. Although it's well out of my era I'm certainly tempted to purchase one. I very much enjoyed testing it out with some heavy trains on the layout. Thanks to Hattons for providing me with a sample to look at.
If you're interested in browsing the full range check out the link below.
    bit.ly/2RNh5zZ
For those of you who think EJ has sold out don't panic! No money has changed hands and the sample is being sent back to Hattons. I'm just having a bit of fun with some model trains.
I'll be back soon with more progress on the office interior. Hope you enjoy the video, cheers.

US model railroader here. It's kind of taboo to model European railroads over here (although I think opinions are changing), but I find the European equipment to be fascinating. It's just so much different than ours. I think there's a mutual respect, because I've heard Euro modelers comment on how powerful and tough our locos look, and how the average length of a North American train is so long. I'm a huge railfan that likes everything!

Although I live in the U.S. and model my local and respective railroads, I really enjoy your content. I find railways in other countries fascinating and the models of them are no exception. You do an exceptional job in regards to your research and delivery of information. Keep it up my friend. Take care, and God bless!

I take my hat off to this video. Out of all of your great vids this gets 10/10 for being informative, great introduction, background research - and the sound track at 0:42 blew me away. All we need now is a decent update from Hattons.

Quite the "time warp" effect going on with a '66 going around your layout! Detail on the frame underneath the body is stunning. The chains that hold the bogies onto the body are particularly nice looking.
The Class 66 is a pretty interesting story, very reliable for a long time after introduction and with a good cost, but in recent times are looking to be a bit dated and time for a new generation. Absolutely one of the best examples of the right loco at the right time. Special mention to a few drivers who've said about the feeling of quality they get from locos like the Class 60. Stuff like the Class 57 program re-done with the same model engine as the Class 59 seems right the ticket. Looks like the perceived quality - if overlooking the poor BR freight availability - is getting better only with stuff like the Class 70 and Class 68 of recent times!

Times move on and I agree. Some 66s are now getting on for 21 years old with cab features that are even older. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

I hear 66s daily as I live about 100 yards from the main dock spur of Felixstowe, with multiple operators, Sheds YINGYING in sidings all say at Ipswich, and when I lived in Leeds I could hear them in Freightliner's TMD/depot in GHuunslrt, and the infamous Great Heck 66 sat under a tarp for a long time there

I was shocked that EWS was operated by Wisconsin Central. I live in Wisconsin less than one thousand yards away from the northeast mainline between Green Bay and Fond du lac. I always thought it a coincidence the EWS and WC liveries were so closely matched. Now I know why! The Class 66 is a beauty, especially in EWS colors. I absolutely love the Hatton model! Thanks Richard!

Richard thank you very much for your unexpected & interesting Peek at the soon to be released Hatton's Class 66. Do like how you removed the body and your remarks on the items that could be damaged. Would like to seen a stationery review of changing the lights with your Lenz Set 100. For any one considering buying the model, you will need a Six function 21 pin DCC decoder. I have already purchased the decoder that Hatton's recommend for this model. I wait with interest for my own production model to come in the post. The detailed instructions for this model are already available to download from the Hatton's website. Love your content on your Channel, Happy Christmas Richard

Although this is 4 years later I still believe the sound on a Hatton’s class 66 is superior to any other class 66 on the market in my opinion, especially the bass on the EM2 speaker on the sound fitted models.

I know that Class 66 is not popular in the UK because of displacing the old British made first generation types. Thank you Richard for the excellent history of Class 66. I’ve spent over 20 years on the railway in the US and Canada. Over that career just about every EMD model since the 1950s has been assigned to me. They have been very reliable, and well laid out, except for the models built since the spin off from GM. Since then it seems that quality has suffered. Hopefully Cat will return some of the former luster.

Hatton's have push the barriers even further with the attention to detail in this model of a 66. Many people have waited for this model for a long time and I think they will be not be disappointed with it. The sound is very realistic. As for not fitting a driver, how many models have been fitted with them over the years. If they were to fit a driver, what about the second man? All manufactures have to look at the costs involved in making a scale Model Engine that they can sell at a reasonable price and any extra's would increase the cost and then people would moan about the price. They have to draw a line and stick to it. This is only my opinion. It is too modern for the layout I have planned. Martin. (At home for Christmas in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand.)

I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on that Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.
A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford could they extend the DLR.
All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains.
Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique minor no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

Yeah it's an EMD 710 in the real thing. Been used in quite a few locomotives.

The class 59 sounds like an SD40, just with a bit of a baffle to the exhaust. The 66 sounds more like an F59PH but I much prefer the sound of the SD40 if I'm honest.

ZunnanDeclawed The class 66 has the same 12-710 power plant as the North American F59. Canadian Pacific has a class of former SD40s that were repowered with the 12-710 also. As rebuilt, these units have the same innards as a class 66.

I have to admit, I have a preference for the 20-645 prime mover, particularly in tunnel motor format. The whine of those fans on top of that massive 20 cylinder lump when they're opened up and worked hard is highly distinctive. The 710 always seemed a bit subdued compared with those second gen 645s, especially where there are more cylinders involved; which is why I'll always prefer the 59 to the 66.

It was actually quite cool watching a class 66 on your layout even though I know their way too new for your layout but I really enjoyed this however I think I can get away with getting one of the new hattons class 66 but it will have to represent literally one of the first to arrive in the uk

Thank you so much for this video -I'm really enjoying your modeling clips, having just got back into the hobby after many years away from it. Im down in New Zealand, so not too familiar firstly with the history of the class 66 (thank you for that), and also the Hattons range - are they manufacturers of OO loco's, and retailers, they name is not familiar to me? I was looking at some of the Hornby class 66 loco's and going to purchase one or two (we have no stock at all down here in NZ due to COVID)......is there a preference? I love the high detail of this model.
Also, I am assuming from looking at your clip, they tend to pull flat decks with sea containers - do you have a preference for flat decks as far as high spec? I have some Bachmann Branchline which I am really pleased with. Appreciate any thoughts you might have?
Certainly not adverse to running high quality HO flat beds too such as Athearn etc.

Good introduction sound, I have several Bachmann class 66's. Good report. Interesting manuel switches lighting arrangement. I hope the new ESU V5 can cope with the lighting options, If not Lenz or Zimol DCC sound decoder. I will check with SWD, Coastal DCC or 'Charlie'. Nice example of a class 66. I don't mind if you extend your layout to cover modern era.

Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I have eight on order with Hattons, for my collection. I would order more, but have the over thirty by Bachmann. All different, many specials. What size of Kadee, do you use for your 66s, as I would to change to the aforesaid, for my displays?
