Imagine yourself on the first day of the job as a flight attendant, only for it to be tragically cut short within 24 hours. I cant help but feel sorry for Ms. Holberg
I am a retired mechanic/crew chief from a major US air carrier and have enjoyed crash analysis from two other you tube presenters. I stumbled into one of your videos a couple weeks ago and was blown away by the detail you place in your videos be it the weather, physics, or mechanical issues related to a particular incident. They are not only informative, but they teach as well. Thank you for your time and effort into very well produced videos.
I highly recommend UA-cam videos from Mentour Pilot. Very detailed and NO dramatic filler like “Little did they know that today would be different…”. Also the creator, Petter, is a 737 pilot and trainer for Ryan Air.
@@Andrew-iv5dqI find the foreshadowing refreshing. I find her style brings the more human element into the accident report. I love mentour pilot but he has a different style. I can watch a break down of the same incident on both channels and take something different from each.
38:21 NASA found this out rather ingeniously. They took a Boeing KC-135 StratoTanker and modified its refuelling boom to spray water. Then, while in flight, an ATR-72 was flown right behind the StratoTanker. And yellow dye in the water was able to show where the ice was most prone to forming.
Dyes - nice! That's the same way feline optometrists figure out if a cat's sclera (I think that's what the transparent bit is called);is wounded or has dead tissue.
@@AlphaGarg Yep had that done with my beautiful Burmese pussycat who has since passed😢- It was an expensive process but fortunately they didn’t have to fly a KC135 in front of him which would’ve been traumatic and even more expensive and also I would’ve had to sit out on the wing of a following aircraft holding him 😂
Coming here because of the recent disaster in Brazil (august 9th, 2024) involving an ATR aircraft from VoePass airlines that killed 62 people. Thanks a looot for this video!!!!

@@ivanpetrov5185 Those are very good questions that you make that sound like we should answer in a way that you want us to. But did they? Maybe you can tell us about that. At least I dont remember there being a pilot strike over vaccinations let alone mass firings over it. In fact i would assume many lost their jobs due to the massive decrease in air travel at the time. Why they still havent been hired back I can only attribute to company greed.
@@ivanpetrov5185 they said it was the first time they heard of it. what did you expect? "ohhh right i forgot?" they weren't watching your news station, dude.
We had an accident in Brazil today that's very similar and many people are saying it happened for the same reasons as flight 4184. We can't say anything yet but it's hard to deny the similarities. The weather conditions here were bad and we saw the plane falling like a brick from the sky in a vertical line in a full stall and spinning flat around itself (unusual). The nose was alined with the horizon. Completly uncontrolable... Horrible disaster.... Sad day here.
I was a high school freshman when the news broke about the crash; seeing the degree of fragmentation and the crater on the TV was eye opening, but when they showed the hundreds of wooden stakes with marker flags that denoted a body or body fragment, it left a indelible impression on me that remains today. This was my first time learning just how deadly ice is to aircraft.
I take away a couple of things with this video. My heart goes out to the poor girl that was on her 1st day as a flight attendant. I just retired after over 50 years as a flight attendant and came home with very very few incidents over my career let alone an accident. I am truly very grateful. More important though is we look at the record for aviation incidents or accidents over the last 30 years. We have come a long way in this industry especially in the last 20 years. The industry has become very safe and hopefully we'll continue to be safe as this is the first priority.
Flight attendants have had a big role in the safety of aviation, too. Knowing you had such a long career without a major accident puts into perspective that kind of responsibility - decades could go by without much of note but some FAs then find themselves the hero of the story with no warning.
Agreed. I experienced a few close calls..loss of power, a landing gear malfunction, several bird strikes and a near miss air collision in Nigerian airspace. We had superb aircrew, strict aircraft maintenance, excellent airfield management. Military airlift had higher standards, in my opinion.
Thank you for covering this crash. Happened roughly 1 hour from where I grew up. The fact that people KNEW about the issues with icing is absolutely heartbreaking. The weather segments are a favorite of mine, really well done :)
That people knew and the BEA was even trying to make it pilot error to protect their French aircraft production is not what I would call heartbreaking. I'm furious at people who deliberately risked the lives of passengers for the sake of the almighty $. And in this incident they killed 68 people for that reason. The fact is that a number of recommendations after crashes are not adressed by the aircraft manufactorers if they can avoid it because it cost money to correct the flaw. It is in those cases never adressed until another crash occurs that will kill even more people until the accumulated death tally becomes to high to ignore for even the most hardline $ seekers that anything is done. And then only because they don't want to miss out on further sales. Not because peoples lives are of any importance to them even if they will always claim that to be their primary concern. But somehow their actions and explanations always have a very eerie resemplance to the Göebbels manner of adressing issues from the pulpit.
@@BlingtingSamin Nepal there where multiple errors in succession, approaching the runway in a non-standard procedure, wrong propeller setting, tunnel vision... The accident from Brazil is still under investigation
@@arthurdefreitaseprecht2648 The preliminary report in Brazil indicates error as well, as in a failure to properly respond to airframe icing, loss of speed and performance, and finally, a stall

It is too early to confirm, but yesterday's ATR72 accident in Brazil, which occurred in severe icing conditions, suggests that the ice issues may not have been fully addressed yet.
Maybe it was an old plane that still had the old de-icing system. Since developed countries keep selling their old outdated planes to underdeveloped countries, I wouldn't discount this. How old was Brazil's plane?
@breakinglousy1 from what I've read Voepass had updated icing systems. In that case the plane pitched down significantly, then pitched up and stalled into a flat spin. That would make you think if anything the ailerons iced over, or the pilot had a startle response to the aircraft losing altitude and pitched up to the point of stalling. Either way it doesn't seem to be the same as this flight.
It's not too early. This piece of junk just killed even more people because it can't handle ice. And anyone who disagrees is free to message me about it as a type rated ATR pilot with over 1,000 hours in that french POS
@@breakinglousy1 An ATR-72 500 manufactured in 2010 for - now defunct; Belle Air of Albânia, transferred in 2015 for Pelita Air Service of Indonésia, and for Voepass of Brazil in September 2022. No "developed countries" involved in their story, only "third world" countries.
I was flying home from Dallas to Minnesota when that plane went in. It shocked me. Hundreds of those ATR ‘s flew out of DFW back then. Very rare to see an aircraft the turn over and dive in like that. It was very bad weather that day indeed.
Facts! DFW had ATRs everywhere!!! I loved how they would turn into the gate, giving jetbridge access to the rear pax door and could continue turning out, requiring no pushback.
And as incredible as it is, August 2024 yet another ATR-72 crashes in Brazil where videos of the accident give clues of a stalled aircraft coming out of the clouds indicating the possibility (too early to tell as of today) of a repeat of the same accident. 🤔
These planes are not good. They have the #1 crash rating. It baffles me how they continue to use a plane that's incapable of flying the way it should. These should never be flown again
i was going to make a long, drawn out comment on just how great your videos have become, but seeing how so many of your viewers have already done so i just want to say two things. first, i sincerely hope all goes well for you with your surgery. i hope your recovery goes smoothly and you can get back to these videos quickly. secondly, and if i may be so bold...royal blue is absolutely your color! take care and be well!
Thanks Chloe for another very well put explanation of weather phenomena! As a very young ATP I had been in a similar situation on a SAAB 340. The only warning we got in the cockpit were a somewhat unexplained reduction in airspeed and a marked change in wind noise. I immediately requested a descent clearance and started my descent at the same time. Only later did I learn, that the 340 was susceptible to tail-plane icing in conditions where supercooled moisture was present... Your weather report as always is spot on and even for an old ATP interesting to learn form. Keep up the good work - much appreciated!
Sol Líneas Aéreas, Flight 5428 crashed near Prahuaniyeu, Argentina after severe icing, a SAAB 340A, same previous symptoms ua-cam.com/video/I1EIEtSbyZc/v-deo.html (it's in Spanish)
Former Simmons pilot here. Well done presentation and factually accurate. One aspect that contributed to the loss of control was the ATR’s excellent autopilot. It could mask control issues until it couldn’t handle them anymore leaving the pilots with unflyable control forces upon sudden disconnection. The rudder also is limited at moderate speed rendering it near useless should it be needed above its limiting speed. This crash was another example of big business putting profit and loss ahead of safety. Miss you Sandi. 😢 1:02
Dear Chloe, the quality of this video is exceptional. The amount of detail and background work that has gone into is very very impressive and your dedication for communicating correct information is commendable!
Hey Chloe, just wanted to say that I love your calm narration style and research/production quality - they should let you take over as producer of the "ACI"/"Mayday" TV show as well at this point :D
I remember giving a short presentation about supercooled moisture in physics class to improve my abysmal grade! Thank you very much for your in-depth work, it's videos like these that remind me how excited I actually am about physics and the like now that there's not the looming threat of an exam attached to it.
A very common arrangement in Europe too.I flew from Helsinki to Marieheim in the Aland archipelago and on the surface it looked like a Fin Air plane but once aboard the crew uniform and safety cards revealed I was actually on an Estonian airline called,if I remember correctly, Nordica.British Airways had loads of these sub airways running feeder and local European services for them; City Jet, Logan Air,GB Airways to name but a few.The planes were all painted up to look like BA owned them.
We’ve got one in Scotland like that, Logan Air normally runs the regional routes like the Outer Hebrides islands to mainland Scotland, and Orkney/Shetland flights to/from mainland, but one of the sub flights is London/Newcastle to Inverness/Aberdeen/Glasgow/Edinburgh by British Airways, Logan Air can only do a few of these per week but British Airways can do the flights from Newcastle and London every day, several times a day, so our smaller Scottish national flight provider (and the only Scottish flight provider) is actually able to fulfil the flight needs of us Scots! Nice to see Logan Air get a mention, we’re a small country so it’s nice to see them get mentioned!!
Have to say to hearing you national airliner dropped about planes that have these war survived the cold here was bit unsettling. Have flown these bad boys many times
Today I learned that SLDs have the power to bring aircraft down in a matter of seconds. The in depth explanation from the weather segment makes this channel stand out from the others! Keep up the amazing work!
Not seconds, but perhaps minutes. The pilots in this accident continued flying in icing conditions, at a speed that was too slow. They ignored the warning signs and did nothing to escape the icing conditions. The captain even mentioned that he was concerned about stalling, yet he did nothing about it.
Great video Chloe, I'm sorry I can't support you financially because I live on a pension due to motor neurone disease (very much a one-way ticket - people think MND/ALS is rare but one's lifetime chance of acquiring MND is 1 in 300, however I work as a scientist volunteer and we are getting closer to cures for neurodegenerative diseases which will be great news when we get there). I can support you by telling you that you are doing a fantastic job, and you will be in my thoughts and prayers when you are having the surgery and recovering from it. Love from Rick
We from Brazil, yesterday, just have an similar accident, which 61 people died. So sad to see that it's not that so incommun. We really felt a lot for this accident in 1994
I dont understand why a regional airline in Brazil would fly an ATR72 considering Brazil manufacturers the Embraer which is personally my favorite airframe. RIP to the 61 innocent people who lost their lives. Greed is the downfall of humanity
@@TUPELO_HUNNYEmbraer does not have turboprops planes in its portfolio, only turbofans. It happens that for distances up to 500Nm turboprops are more fuel efficient. This is why airlines chose this kind of airplane in shorter routes.
PHENOMENAL video, Chloe! This is one of those watershed air accidents that completely changed air safety in the US. Very well done. And good luck with surgery at the end of the year~! Thanks for all the work you put into these videos.
This video combines many of my favorite things: aircraft investigation, meteorology, copious and tasteful use of the color blue, and my favorite weather lady. Keep up the good work! Also: this channel is the only one I can watch in bed with my headphones off when my husband's sleeping, as he finds the creator's voice soothing and says it helps him sleep.
The latest, longer videos turned out to be amazing...really hyped for the next episodes! The supercooled water explanation was *super* interesting. I didn't even know about that phenomenon.
supercool.. how cool a phenomenon! I was with my camper in Switserland /Swiss and it was freezing cold. When I took my ten liter watercontainer out to make a cup of coffee, the water still was fluid. The moment I put the container on the ground... in a flash the ten liters froze to one big block of ice! Incredible (for me at that moment); now I understand :-)
Here after the tragic crash of ATR 72 in Brazil, flight number 2Z2283. It could be the same reason to crash as it happened to American Eagle. Did they put any new better system on ATR for de-icing since 1994?

Hi Chloe Wanted to drop a line to let you know how terrific, informative and fascinating your videos are. All your hard work produces great results. Thank you so much. Dee 🎉
As a fan of aviation since I can't remember, and today an Ultra Light/Lsa pilot I've been interested in airplanes accident analysis. Not for obscure reasons, but for the knowledge and lessons to be learned by any pilot who wants to live a long life! First it started on tv documentaries, then YT arrived and today there's a certain amount of Tubers treating of this matter. Some are good, some aren't. Well I just discovered yours and I'm really impressed by the quality and accuracy of your production wich I place among the best I've seen. I'm french and I was delited by your pure English accent and your great diction, I laughed with the weather presentation, which was very detailed by the way. GOOD JOB, I've now plenty of others to watch !

I used to fly frequently on these American eagle Atrs Chicago/Milwaukee. I had some frightful flights on them. I remember once in a heavy snow I was sure we were going to go off the runway. We did get airborne and to our destination, but everyone was rattled. I was so happy when they stopped using them.
Hi Chloe. I really enjoyed your video. You always do such an awesome job with your video production. I enjoy watching you so much . Hope all goes well with your surgery.
Tragically, another accident involving an ATR-72 occurred today (August 9, 2024) in Brazil, claiming 62 lives (ua-cam.com/video/8FbkkVE5rW8/v-deo.html). While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, initial reports suggest that icing, due to weather conditions, is a likely factor.
Ma'am, I just wanted to say I've always appreciated the depth to which you explore these incidents. Your tone, delivery and thoughtfullness make these videos a pleasure to watch. I'm glad you've become more comfortable in front of the camera as well. Best of luck with your upcoming surgery.
Dear Chloe Howie. I really do love Your channel because of several things. All the immense work You put forth regarding,( in lack of better words, )all the facts, every little spec og information, You have to "hunt down" regarding what kind of aircraft it were, crew, weather, in depht analycis around the nature leading up (down) to a crash / incident, ie. Ice. I'm a subscriber for several channels on UA-cam, but I must say Your channel is simply one of the best. Thankyou!
I usually watch videos at 125% or 150% speed but you have such a soothing cadence and delivery that I just enjoy your videos on normal speed. Much love and another great video! ETA: yaaaaaas! another weather report!
Sadly, it appears this exact same scenario has cost 61 lives down in Brazil today (as of this commentary posting) - Wx Conditions were present, with severe icing SIGMETs and all, which may have been why an exactly alike ATR-72 was filmed this afternoon coming down in an unsurvivable flat-spin. It crashed in a residential area, where fortunately it did not hit anyone on the ground. A number of houses were damaged though, so it could have been an even worse disaster if not for a little "luck" (if you can call it that, in such a dreadful day) Now the questions: WHY were they flying an ATR through reported severe icing conditions? What else might have happened to put the plane in that position to begin with? And what else went wrong that no recovery was possible? Was it really the same case, or just strangely alike circumstances surrounding something else? We'll have to wait for the investigation reports... Until then, much head-scratching and sadness for all the victims and their families. RIP
The one comfort to be found in the tragic aftermath of these horrific crashes is how the industry learns and evolves so that future lives can be spared. If the investigation into today's incident reveals that the manufacturer hasn't done enough to safeguard the planes and the regulatory agencies haven't done enough to ensure compliance with previous findings, if essentially it's just the same thing over again that would be so heartbreaking. If the lessons learned at the cost of precious lives lost were ignored, there should be outrage.
Chloe, I'm still catching up with your videos and only just watched this one - which confirms my view that your output ranks at 5* level in terms of the quality of research, detail, logic, presentation, narration, balance, tact and respect and visual support. Truly excellent in every respect, and therefore textbook level in terms of teaching lessons learned - in no small way helping us all to understand the minutiae and intricacies of aviation, and the great efforts that must continue to be made in improving safety. Brilliant video, once again, for which many thanks.

Ty for this fascinating and educational doc! It helped me put possible things together for a GA icing crash that killed 4 of my family members, although who knows, and they weren't in a holding pattern. Anyway, it was said that they hit a "sudden" blizzard on approach to an extremely high ski resort in Colorado, at night, in winter. I lived in the Colo mtns and there's no "sudden" blizzards. But they could have flown into sudden supercooled large droplets, having already made the terrible decision to fly into a storm, at night, in the mountains. The crash was witnessed and the plane tumbled down the entire runway, so they could have passed through the droplets on descent, and then had no way to control for the wind on landing, or w/e. Regardless, the pilot, my cousin, stacked the Swiss cheese model that night, with no room for any issues. I wish I knew more about my cousins' crash, as I got the news 3rd hand, from my mom, who was not the most accurate storyteller. People (the media) were very suspicious of the supercooled droplet thing, when the AE 4184 report came out. So it wouldn't have even been on the radar for my cousin's crash, plus a GA accident wouldn't have had the investigation of a newsworthy commercial flight. I knew little about aviation in 1978, and time has scrambled the details as I heard them. Too many have lost their lives to icing. Flying in bad winter weather made me very anxious ever after, and I avoided GA and commuters, esp after the AE crash. My cousins' crash caused fear that kept me from becoming a pilot later on, when I developed a real love of flying and interest in aviation. Too bad I didn't know all the things about aviation I know now, tks to great aviation channels like this, back when becoming a pilot was still possible.

It was a nice fragmentation and quite normal for the events of the circumstances inconvenience
You were a flight attendant into your 70s?
Flight attendants have had a big role in the safety of aviation, too. Knowing you had such a long career without a major accident puts into perspective that kind of responsibility - decades could go by without much of note but some FAs then find themselves the hero of the story with no warning.
Congratulations on 50 years..from one flight attendant to another. I retired after 30 years.🙂
Agreed. I experienced a few close calls..loss of power, a landing gear malfunction, several bird strikes and a near miss air collision in Nigerian airspace. We had superb aircrew, strict aircraft maintenance, excellent airfield management. Military airlift had higher standards, in my opinion.

I am sad for all on board this plane.
same ty chloe!!!

Chloe is a girls name. The presenter in this video is clearly male. What?
As an airline pilot, I am very impressed by the way you dive into the details with 0 errors. Nicely done. 👏🏻
Imagine your life being determined by weather on a flight. Unacceptable.
I would be totally freaking out when the plane started to roll. Those poor passengers! RIP TO EVERYONE.😢
And as incredible as it is, August 2024 yet another ATR-72 crashes in Brazil where videos of the accident give clues of a stalled aircraft coming out of the clouds indicating the possibility (too early to tell as of today) of a repeat of the same accident. 🤔
Sad true 😢
Yeah
These planes are not good. They have the #1 crash rating. It baffles me how they continue to use a plane that's incapable of flying the way it should. These should never be flown again
@@yungblade7 none of the turbopro planes are certified to fly in "severe" icing conditions, which appears to be the case on the brazilian accident.

ATR-72 had crashed in Brazil - 2024, Aug09. Ice conditions level 170.

As someone who lives in the caribbean and have personally flown in a ATR before I never knew of it history, thank you for sharing once again.
An atr-72 just crashed yesterday in Brasil, and we have a SImEG of severe ice, he went to a stall.
The plane shouldn't be flying

Tragically, another accident involving an ATR-72 occurred today (August 9, 2024) in Brazil, claiming 62 lives (ua-cam.com/video/8FbkkVE5rW8/v-deo.html). While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, initial reports suggest that icing, due to weather conditions, is a likely factor.

Thankyou!

ETA: yaaaaaas! another weather report!
It's so nice that your local tv station's meteorologist helped you in the production of this video. Thank you DBTV!
Another fantastic episode. Really enjoyed the weather report as it helps understand what went on. Can't wait to see the next video😊
A number of houses were damaged though, so it could have been an even worse disaster if not for a little "luck" (if you can call it that, in such a dreadful day)
Now the questions: WHY were they flying an ATR through reported severe icing conditions?
