Billy ray came from a backwoods environment, Deep woods. Players laughed at him when he shared that eating possum was normal for him. Dirt poor to good money was something he wasn't ready for. What a great baller he was.

I hate it when people claim all Dr J did was dunk and couldn't shoot. They only know him through highlight reels that only showcase his flashy dunk's, not from actual games that show all his abilities and arsenal.
Julius Erving had a killer mid-range game and is one of the best defensive player's and finishers I've ever seen.

I watched Doc in Philly since the merger and trade from the Nets. In 1978, 79 I would go see the 76ers practice at F&M college. You know Doc's career field goal percentage is 50.7%, he is the FIFTH leading scorer in basketball history when the ABA/NBA stats are combined and recognized as they should be. Jabbar, Karl Malone, MJ, Chamberlain, JULIUS ERVING. It is NEVER mentioned that OLD Doc BEAT Larry Legend the first 2 out of 3 times they met in the playoffs. The 76ers played for the title the first 3 out of 4 years to open the 80s. In the ABA Doc won two titles and 3 MVPS and in the NBA he won the MVP at 31 yrs old over Bird, Doc is one of the five or six NCAA players to ever average 20 pts and 20 rebs in history. Doc rose to the occasion when it counted and did what it took to win games on both ends. I think he is the only player to win an MVP in the ABA and NBA.

Wow. I was 11 years old and this was my first season watching the NBA and I loved this Blazer team. Bill Schonely with the call and I remember it well because they replayed his call many times that season and the next as Blazers radio broadcasts began.
Billy Ray was probably my first basketball hero. I even got to meet Calvin Natt at a sporting goods store in Salem and he was so nice to me and my cousins. I wish I still had that poster that he signed. I don't know what happened to it. I had it on my wall for years.

I want to say a bit more about meeting Calvin Natt: I was living in Keizer and saw in the newspaper that Calvin would be making an appearance at a sporting goods store in Salem, which was very close. I wanted to go see him and my little brother and sister and cousin came with me. I think we rode our bikes there, but maybe our parents gave us a ride. I don't remember for sure.
But I remember it all well. I walked in and saw Calvin sitting behind the front counter. I even said"Wow, there he is!" It was my first time meeting any kind of celebrity in person. He was so big, especially to a little guy like me only 11 or 12 years old.
Calvin had a stack of posters of himself shooting a jump shot. He signed one for each of us. I remember his signature looked kind of funny. He seemed quite tickled to have a bunch of little kids come in like that. We were all so excited to see him and there was nobody else in the store. So he talked to us quite a bit. He looked at my cousin who just had a crue-cut and Calvin said "I'm going to get my hair cut like that!" The store owner laughed and was having a great time too. My cousin walked on air for days because of that comment. And not too long later, Calving was sporting a crue-cut! That really made my cousin happy.
I always loved Calvin Natt for that. Even when he missed big free throws often!
When he was traded to Denver, I was so sad and couldn't believe it. But I always loved him, even when he wasn't a blazer anymore.
Here I am 54 years old and I still love him for taking a little time to make a bunch of little kids feel good. Just writing this brings a lump to my throat.
Pro athletes should all realize that how they treat young fans really means a lot.

I faintly remember him as a Blazer in 1980-81 on TV. As a young teen back then I was just a casual observer of pro sports, including the NBA. When the Blazers won WCF in 1990, I became a huge fan. But by then Bates was already a distant memory in my brain. Sadly he did not have a better financial situation after the NBA & PBA. I heard he was also homeless at one point. He's still alive though, but still making ends meet. Alcohol & no solid early education were two of his obstacles in life.

Wow! Thank you for uploading.... Dr J very creative with the ball, one of my favorite players. Sayang talaga si Billy Ray Bates, he could have been a force in nba.

He should’ve!! He was an amazing player I don’t know why Portland cut him after he averaged 30 in the playoffs.

More or less gave up NBA after Doc retired. Did finish out Birds career but that was it. There was just something about Doc. That said, players of that era were just cool.
