  • San Francisco Tour Guide Guild's Member Jesse Warr examines in depth African-American history in the first century from the foundation of California.
People of African descent figure in California history from its very name. This presentation will introduce: two Rosa Parks who successfully challenged racial discrimination in San Francisco public transit; The Presidio's Buffalo Soldiers; the young teen who nicknamed the PPIE; and other indomitable people who survived de facto Jim Crow and persistent efforts to marginalize and ridicule San Francisco's Black minority. As most of us know, California briefly took center stage in the long-standing national debate over slavery, and its admission to the Union helped precipitate the Civil War.

My name is Simone Felton and I'm an intern for the San Francisco Historical Society. We're interested in doing a Black History Month feature this February focusing on local history and we were wondering if we could repost this video. We could either post the video or link it on our Facebook page, either way with credit to your organization. Thank you so much for your consideration.
