Licence is just the name, it doesn't work like other licences. It's like how in the US they have to pay for 'cable' except instead of cables we just use a signal. I think in Canada it just comes out of taxes but I guess they decided against that here because when the licence was invented TVs were rare so having it come from taxes would annoy the people who weren't benefiting from it.
If you follow their letters you can just tell them you dont need one. Ive never had anyone at my door about it since moving out 6 years ago. The word TV "license" is a bit of a misnomer that confuses the rest of the world. Basically you're paying for the BBC and they put a rule in place way back when that you had to pay that to get anything broadcast, even Freeview. I believe if you own a smart TV and just use streaming services (other than BBC iPlayer) you don't need a license
you are 100% correct.. you can own as many tv's as you like.. but if they are NOT set up to recieve live broadcasts of any kind from any source or access BBCiplayer.. then you do not need to have a TV lisence
not that you will get that info from TVL
Pretty sure you need one to stream anything. Pisses me off coz I only ever stream or game but here we are. (Edit to add) and I don't watch anything BBC so I hate that I have to pay them for literally nothing.
@@ryuwarrior89 If you don't use freeview or any broadcast television, disconnect it then you shouldn't need a TV license. Check first though, don't take my word for it
@@ryuwarrior89 no.. you do NOT need a license to stream or game..
you can stream anything on youtube, Netflix, even channel 4 on demand etc, as well as SOME live stuff as long as it is not from an official broadcaster.. your content creator live streams are fine..
if you own a tv as a monitor.. then make sure it doesnt have an ariel connected and is de-tuned.. (you can own as many tv's as you like, AS LONG AS THEY (including dvd recorders etc) ARE NOT SET UP TO RECIEVE OR RECORD LIVE BROADCASTS or BBCiplayer)
just cancel your direct debit.. chances are you'll get a call from TVL where they will try to hard sell.. ask for a refund for the money you've paid into the next years lisence and tell them to remove your details from their system.. by law they have to
every letter you get from that point will be addressed to the "legal occupier".. that will include the letters that will tell you they are "in the final stages of investigation", which will be addressed still to the legal occupier.. just a hint to what powers they actually have.. none.. they cant even look on the council registers etc
if they knock on the door.. they will start by asking questions.. your responce should be to ask who THEY are.. they are the ones who have to justify why they are on your property and are legally required to identify.. as soon as they say they are from TVL, say "no thank you " and close the door.. they are only door to door sales men with ZERO powers.. you are NOT legally required to answer the door to them never mind talk to them, nor are you legally required to give them "no lisence needed" information .. and if you do talk.. there's a high chance you will say something silly and give them cause to apply for a warrent.. they are trained by police to get you to drop yourself in it.. so just dont engage..
from what you have said in your post.. it looks like the deliberately worded information has scared you into buying something you dont need nor are legally abliged to.. dont be.. its all bluff
when you do get a threat-o-gram, look closely at the information.. NOT how it is worded.. the truth is in there.. once you get past the red ink etc
@@KemPeck1701 I found the information about registering to not need a TV license on their website just fine. Fill in an online form, and hey presto, no letters about TV licensing anymore.
TV Licensing is the biggest British scam going, but the bbc staff need new iPhones and iMacs every 6 months and 400 of them are essential to every sports match coverage apparently.
People here have gone to JAIL for not paying ..... go online to the BBC and say I do not watch live TV, I have been license free since 2019...
Jail?! Really? 😮 I've known people get fines in excess of £800 but never jail. My argument with them is I do not go to greggs and inform them I do not want their sausage roll so why must I contract with TV License? I don't need it I don't need them to have my details to know I don't need it. I'd be willing to argue that basis in court if necessary.
@@rachelengland3571 They go to jail for not being able to pay the fine now if they could afford the fine they could afford the license CRAZY BBC are Scum... and I do not hate on people east I have love for most but not them !!
its because the bbc is ad free or smth so they need to get money from somewhere
just tell them you dont watch tv they cant do anything abt it
Mine works fine without one
never pay a tv license i never have and never will
This lovely man is giving me wholesome John Candy vibes 🙌🏼
Haven't had one in 25 years or so. I don't have a TV either, so there's that. Ooh - if they start licensing YT, there'll be hell to pay.
is it me or do you sound literally like the late great John Candy??
Ok calm down Canadian friend . Perhaps try a cup of tea made with a kettle . You can ignore the letters and not answer the door to them. You don't have to tell them you don't want one .
Lol it's the BBC writting off excess mystery funds in paper & stamps 😂
Your accent is so spot on its got me thinking you must be faking being Canadian 😂
Spare a moment of thought for the deaf people reading the subtitles and wondering why you're a minimal and need a licence for a forearm 🙏
This seems so weird…..yup America. I literally can’t comprehend this being a thing at all. So when you buy a tv do they ask if you want a tv license at checkout???
In the UK the noun is spelt 'Licence'. The verb 'To License' is spelt with an S. As Michael Caine would say 'Not a lot of people know that'.
So as an immigrant I had to pass a life in the UK test and that was one of the questions that was asked in the test is how many licenses do you need per household?. I know might sound weird but it’s not common knowledge.
tv license pays to hush up victims of jimmy
You've confused the Canadian.... Jimmy would fix it for you.. sexually,.... If you were a child....... And alot of BBC DJs and TV faces. .... I don't know what to tell you.
You only need a tv license if you are watching live tv or BBC I player. You don't need a tv license for UA-cam. However if you have a physical tv and don't have a tv license you should make sure not to have to plugged into the aerial. The TV license pays for the BBC to make tv shows that you can watch without fuether payment and without adverts.
Don't worry about it love, no one pays it anyway 😂
Ive had fines a few times despite telling them i dont watch tv. My first fine i even let them in to show them i had no electricity in the property and still got a fine, the second the guy even told me his job upset him, i said i had a tv but no one uses it as we use our phones to watch other stuff, still got a fine. Now i just ignore them and wont answer the door. As my tv never gets used anymore the detection van cant pick anything up
Licence is just the name, it doesn't work like other licences.
Also used to be free to those over a certain age (I want to say 70?) but they realised that was the majority of people using a license, and of course got greedy :D
Ignore them. You don’t need one if you don’t watch their service live.
😂 they are aggressive 😂❤ they come round and try to go in your house and treat you so badly like a loanshark 😂❤😅 and you don't even need one if you don't watch live TV or BBC ❤❤❤😅😂 can you imagine if amazon prime did it 😅
YOU DONT NEED A TV LISCENCE,IF YOUR NOT WATCH BBC ,IPLAYER OR LIVE PROGRAMS AS THEY ARE BEING SHOWN ON TV,YOU DONT NEED ONE
More importantly don’t pay it and tell em to come back with a warrant
TV licence is a con, but don't pay and jail.... Yay freedom. (For none Brits that sarcasm)
Rains 900 days of the year .. I'm crying 😂😂😂😂
you can ignore it they only prosecute when they think you won't fight it.
Wait till you find out sbout council tax and that when you get a home through a housing association/local council, unless you have 3 months rent upfront, ya know, cause youre disabled or on a low income or youre on benefits or getting your first home after homelessness you ALWAYS start your tenancy in debt and it can take FOREVER to clear them ESPECIALLY if you have absolutely no choice but to pay your rent monthly/4 weekly and your rent will go up by ridiculous amounts every month but universal credit NEVER gives you enough money to pay your rent in full
I dont know why everyone says it rains so much here, it doesn't rain THAT often
It's absolutely ridiculous TV Licence! They can actually send you to prison for not paying it
Here is a quote from TV licencing ... "You cannot be sent to prison for a TV Licensing conviction."
Essentially if you don't want to pay, there's nothing they can do about it. But the license funds the BBC which is incredibly worthwhile. So instead of complaining about the laws of a country you chose to move to, maybe pay the £13 a month
Do NOT pay for a TV License!!! 1!1 its NOT the law no matter who tells you, you can just tell the TV license man to fuck right off and you'll be fine
This is why I just use streaming services 😅
Just bring them in show them u use a firestick kev !!
It's basically the same thing as those food menus you get through post just bin it
You don't to pay it, if they turn up at your door you can politely tell them to piss off :)
It's basically a tax to use any british broadcasting service
It's a development from the old Wireless Receiving Licence
Scammers just ignore and don’t let in, sometimes they bring a police man but have no warrant so just say no to them
Yeah if you watch any live tv you need a tv license (yes that even includes a sky news live stream on youtube, as it is a tv chamnel broadcasting live tv on youtube).
They have no authority whatsoever to enforce the licence so you can chill
It's absolutely stupid that we have this, but also you need to research the laws of the country you're moving to/living in... that's just like... common sense, no?
I pay for my tv licence for one thing a year. Eurovision, i literally don't watch live telly for the other 364 days in the year.
You pay 170 quid to watch Eurovision? Are you ok?
@@n8style no, no I'm not. I also got too scared of the letters. They full on harass you.
He does a very good accent xD
Detector vans are a mystery we hope to understand one day
A TV license is required for any apparatus capable of receiving signals within a certain frequency. Obviously, this specifically includes the BBC.
Only if you actually watch it. I have TVs capable of watching live TV but I just use streaming services (which do not count as live TV) so I don’t need a licence.
@@Shayron1989 Untrue. The act covers owning an apparatus capable of receiving. Read the actual act. NO, don't keep talking - go read the actual communications act, it's free to read for anyone.
optional. A TV License is optional
A tv license is what you used to watch your TV with
They really are aggressive about it. I stopped getting one as BBC really isn't what it used to be, which was essential for decades as any person in their home.
The amount of letters I'd get, which were completely unnecessary kept coming, and I still get one a year, reminding me do you still not want a TV licence?? Are you really sure??
I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE LIKE TF??
Like a pen license in primary school 😂😂😂😂
You only pay tv license if you watch any of the bbc channels. You can phone them let them know that you don't, then all for a refusal to enter your property they'll mark it on system and you won't get any more letters
You need a tv licence especially if you have a concealed tv.
