Saalburg - a reconstructed Roman fort

- Auf der Rückreise aus Belgien habe ich noch einen kleinen Umweg gemacht, um eine Stätte zu besuchen, die ich schon seit vielen Jahren mal sehen wollte: Das Römerkastell Saalburg bei Bad Homburg.
Dieses Kohortenkastell war Teil des obergermanischen Limes und gehört zu den besterforschtesten römischen Forts. Zwischen den Jahren 1900 und 1907 wurde das Kastell wiederaufgebaut, was in dieser Form wohl einmalig sein dürfte. Man fühlt sich wie in diese Zeit zurückversetzt. In den Gebäuden ist eine tolle Ausstellung beheimatet, welche dem Besucher das Leben in der römischen Armee und am Limes-Grenzstreifen näher bringt.
Ich habe mich dort einige Stunden aufgehalten und konnte mich kaum sattsehen an den rekonstruierten Gebäuden und ausgestellten Fundstücken! Was für ein schöner Ort, das spornt mich an, noch mehr Museen und Kastelle entlang des Limes zu besuchen.

On my way back from Belgium i made a small detour in order to visit a place, which i wanted to see for years already: The Roman fort Saalburg near Bad Homburg.
This cohort fort was part of the Upper Germanic Limes line and is one of the best researched Roman forts. Between the years 1900 and 1907 the fort was rebuilt, which is probably unique in this shape and form. It feels like one travelled back in time. In the buildings there is a very nice exhibition, which teaches the visitor a lot about the life in the Roman army and the Limes border.
I stayed there for a couple of hours and could not stop to marvel at the reconstructed buildings and the archaeological findings! What a lovely place, this motivates me to visit more museums and forts along the Limes.

The Saalburg is a Roman fort located on the main ridge of the Taunus, northwest of Bad Homburg, Hesse, Germany. It is a cohort fort, part of the Limes Germanicus, the Roman linear border fortification of the German provinces. The Saalburg, located just off the main road roughly halfway between Bad Homburg and Wehrheim is the most completely reconstructed Roman fort in Germany. Since 2005, as part of the Upper German limes, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The earliest examinations of the site were undertaken from 1853 to 1862 by the Nassau Antiquarian Society under the direction of Friedrich Gustav Habel (1793-1867). But the great impulse to provincial Roman archaeology in Germany came in 1892, when the Reichs-Limes-Kommission (the Imperial Commission for the Roman borders), then chaired by Theodor Mommsen began to research the course of the Limes Germanicus in its entirety, as well as the location of all its forts. In the course of this enormous project, not completed for decades, intensive exploration of the Saalburg and its surroundings was pursued by the archaeologists charged with this stretch of the limes, Louis Jacobi (1836-1910) and his son and successor Heinrich Jacobi (1855-1946). In 1897, Kaiser Wilhelm II, following a suggestion by L. Jacobi, ordered the reconstruction of the Saalburg fort according to the detailed results of its excavation. As a result, the Saalburg became the most completely reconstructed fort on the entire limes. It also houses the Saalburg Museum, one of the two most important institutions dedicated to the study of the German Limes.

Danke dir Hugo! Da haben wir wohl eine ähnliche Idee. Ich würde gerne mal einen Römer bemalen und ihn auf ein Mauerstück stellen. Für so ein Projekt ist es immer hilfreich sich solche Anlagen mal persönlich anzuschauen.

Cheers mate :) I am lucky, i life basically right at the Raetian Limes wall, so i have plenty of Roman border fortifications to explore. But the Hadrians Wall must be an impressive sight too, its just not 30 minutes away from home :)
...or go to Colchester and see the wall, which is even older and the oldest Roman city wall in the UK. Mind you, it is significantly shorter, at 2800 meters.

Wenn man sich Dein Video anschaut kann man nur sagen, daß sich Dein Abstecher sehr gelohnt hat. Toll restaurierte Anlage.
Aussen wie innen mit all den Exponaten sehenswert. Kleiner Abschnitt davon mit einer Figur wäre fast schon eine Inspiration.

Auf jeden Fall, ich wollte da schon ewig hin, aber die Saalburg liegt von mir aus betrachtet eigentliche nie auf der Strecke. Ich werde das in Zukunft immer so halten, wenn ich eine größere Fahrt unternehme. Ein Zwischenstopp an einem Ort, der mich schon länger interessiert, ist einfach ein Muss :)
Very interesting!! I wish they would do something like this here in Colchester... The city was the first Roman capital of Britain after all, when 'Londinium' was but a blip on the map..

Eine Limeswanderung oder Radtour wäre echt mal was. Ich möchte mir dazu demnächst mal wieder was anschauen, wir haben so einiges in der Gegend zu bieten.

In Italy many civilian Roman structures can be found and some of them are still in use. I was amazed by the theatre in Verona, Pompeii and of course the city of Rome itself, which is basically just an open air museum that covers a couple of millenia of history. So no worries mate :)

Mi piace usare le forbicine per le unghie o un taglierino per tagliare le parti fotoincise. Una base solida è importante, ad esempio una piastra di ottone, altrimenti il componente si piegherà quando viene tagliato.
Per piegare uso varie pinzette e pinze, ci sono anche strumenti di piegatura per questo. Tuttavia, sono costosi e li uso raramente.
