I switched to the boxer earlier this year after flying Spektrum since 2015! I am currently using the latching push button for arming/disarming, but I ordered a spare boxer shell and button kit and I plan on designing and printing a conversion plate that will replace the button with a 2-position switch. Apparently I'm also weird, because I do keep my radio in its case with the gimble protector :)
Lol! The internals of the button is pretty huge and hard mounted on the motherboard... So completely removing it would take more work. But probably doable....
Make sure you share the design if you do! Limon is right though the switch is soldered to the main board SOLIDLY so it is not trivial to remove like a switch normally is, but would love to see a replacement.
I've also been a Spektrum user for years... Just re-entered the hobby and found ELRS and RadioMaster. Received my Boxer and ag01 gimbals... I'm looking at my DX18 with disgust...
I love the 2 pos button for exactly the Arm/Disarm use, I can arm or rearm faster and more confidently with button, started with TangoII, then T-Pro, now I have Zorro and still learning to re-arm with flip switch again
I solved the problem of the internal antenna by removing the SMA panel mount and installing a basic Happymodel RX antenna flush with the outside of the case. Held in place with a TPU plug. It gives me un-attenuated signal from the top of my radio while still being able to chuck it in a bag.
I have a TBS Tango II pro wherein I am in the habit of arming/Disarming with the two position push button .Recently shifted to Boxer ,the form factor is really great 👍 as discussed "wierdly"😂 by you . You are a great reviewer and I love your video on the GPS rescue on BF 4.4 which has helped me a lot.I view that video many times just to laugh out 😊😅😅😅. Great work 👏.
I do the same thing on tango2 for arm/disarm, inverted switch, push in to disarm, button is tactical flashlight style it engages before it latches in so you can get it every time even while wearing thick gloves in colder weather, you have to be more careful to unlatch the switch out which is best for arming as it will not arm until it clears the latch. Must let the switch travel fully out to arm. I also have it hardwired mentally to raise the throttle after disarming (before picking up your quad), even if you have a pre-arm its just good practice as additional layer of arm prevention. EDIT: if you do this ensure your armed signal is still high/max on the channel over the air, some protocols such as expresslrs relies on that expectation.
Regarding the touchscreen using more power, there is a setting to make it turn off automatically if there's no button/touch input for an adjustable amount of time. I don't remember from the top of my head what it's called but I do have it setup on my TS16X.
I find that the radio case is great for whoop batteries, goggle cable, a few spare props, prop tool, SD cards, etc. Also never have to worry about hanging up my radio or accidentally turning it on.
Yeah, I need the flip switch for sure for arming and disarming. It’s why I sold the tango and didn’t bother with the mambo. Don’t know what made me think the boxer would be different, but I bought it and it’s not so now it’s in the box it came in and I still use my X9D. Never thought to move one of the switches to the top like you did though which is an awesome idea! I’m inspired! Ty
Haha, thanks for the good laugh Ivan. But couldn't agree more, push button arm/disarm toggles are just a bad idea. I get that they wanted to make it hard to accidentally arm (which I've done few times on my good ole X9D+ and even cut my fingers up once) , but it is also important for disarming to be also be easy. Back when I was learning to fly I botched the disarm on a few landings next to myself and nearly shat myself when airmode tried to over compensate for the quad being restricted by the ground. Nothing worse than obseving yourself being attacked by a rogue quad from the perspective of said quad 😂
A long while back I got a Tango 2 which has similar trigger position switches. But I actually find it to be better and I even moved to using my right finger instead of my left. Since then I find that I have much more precision disarming like I able to disarm right as I touch the ground lightly in this way. So after getting use to it I have to say, no... in my opinion one you get use to it it's actually better and maybe consider setting it up for your right trigger finger.
I happen to be a weiro who loves that 2 pos flush switch… i fly hybrid pinch and my left ring finger is always resting on it and ive just gotten used to it by now… but Boxer, w ag01? Love it..
I remember pulling the tx16s with the radiomaster ranger out of my bag to realise it had turned on and was runnning at 1w elrs. The ranger was very hot. All because the button got pushed and turned on in bag
Radiomaster pocket will disarm mid flight regularly. The buttons actuate after a couple mm and they take no force to actuate, they flutter on and off in sims when you just brush against them. That same behavior will disarm the drone. When i use the RM Pocket my drones arm with the scroll wheel.
Been flying the boxer since release and I dont see a problem with the two position switch if anything it feels more accessible but then again im a pincher
When I saw the boxer release I can't explain how fast I ordered one. I have been flying it for 4 months and it became my daily the minute I got it to the point I can't hold my TX16S anymore. I also use the button press for arming even at mayhem amd had no issues....
I personally use the top left switch for arming since it's right on the face and I can instantly fling my fingers out to knock the switch away from me without moving my hands, but I'm planning on using the latching button as a pre-arm I've just been lazy and haven't set it up
I use the top left switch to arm and the momentary switch on the right shoulder as a pre-arm. That way It takes both hands on the radio to arm the quad. It works great! I'm a mostly hybrid pincher so disarming is as easy as a flick of my left index finger on the SA switch.
I find the toggle much more difficult to actuate. More force required. The whole controller moves and quads moves more.. I thumb throttle and leave pointer on shoulder arm switch.
@Limon, the solution is pretty simple, no need to install switches, you just need to invert SE channel and that's it. So for disarm you only need to do one move, push it. It's not big deal to do push-release on arming.
@@IvanEfimovLimon - I am so scared to keep my arming/disarming on switch, just because of the fact that it happened couple of times in the middle of the flight, I've flipped the switch by accident. It's much more difficult to do that accidentally if using that button.
My X9D with a crossfire module does not turn off when I turn off the slider and it still has a telemetry feed from the the quad. It warns me and waits until I unplug the quad. Same is true when I have an FRSky aircraft with telemetry receiver. So it must be a software slider just like you are asking for.
I'm using the "T1" trim switch on my TX16s for my arm button. I feel like I can keep my fingers on the sticks and use my thumb to quickly arm or disarm. I don't get the reasoning with having buttons where your fingers rest. Like on the Tango 2 and Mambo, you feel like you're definitely going to accidentally disarm at some point. I think Spektrum got it right with that kill switch on the shoulder. You have to reach for it to press it. I always thought they were ahead of some of the others on ergonomics, not other things though.
