Backstage of DIE GUSTLOFFT - The Gustloff is a fictional drama directed by Joseph Vilsmaier, which deals with the shipwreck of the Wilhelm Gustloff in January 1945.
The film tells from the point of view of the fictional character Hellmuth Kehding, the civilian captain of the Wilhelm Gustloff, as the ship leaves Gotenhafen. On board are more than 10,000 people fleeing the oncoming Soviet army. On January 30, 1945, three torpedoes from a Soviet Navy submarine hit the German ship and about 9,000 people died.
