Yes! Once I knew the truth, I wanted to succeed! And I did! So far - been doing this for 35 years. But now, with all the vegan processed foods and excuses of busy life, I have slipped into junk food vegan. But good news!! My husband - who stayed on the S.A.D., of course now at 64, has very high blood pressure and is very overweight. I can't tell him what to do - he see me, all these years, but he could not give up steaks (of dead cows). You don't stay married 35+ years by telling your partner what to do. He sees me, how incredibly healthy I am!!! So I said I guess you'll want to go to a doctor and get that treated? He researched the side effects of rest-of-his-life blood pressure medicine. I didn't say anything. Next day he lingered...and I said, WHAT IF?? What IF eating all you want of yummy food would cause you to naturally shed all that weight and your blood pressure will drop within a week or 2? What if DR MCDOUGALL IS RIGHT? Now, remember, I am 64 and in superb health, no drugs, no dr visits, great weight, great teeth. But this junk food is causing hot flashes again, I know it and I offered to go pure Plan with him. Next day my husband said, let's do it. I am so happy - he chose ME and LIFE over feeding on the dead bodies of tortured animals! I won't have to watch him die of heart disease or (you'd better believe it, as long as he takes to poop) COLON CANCER!! I said, remember in our apartment in 1985 I taped up page 31 of The McDougall Plan so I could remember what it was I was supposed to eat? He did remember. We are taking a couple weeks to clear out the bad food, make meal plans and shop, and I am re-reading the Plan, the McDougall Program, and also 21-Day Kickstart by Dr. Barnard (PCRM) and China Study Solution. They are all good books, but Dr. McDougall's oddly enough, now more than 35 years old, are still the best, and PCRM's 21-Day Kickstart is a easy and wonderful read, a must-read also if you are starting the diet. Plus Lindsay Nixon's cookbooks - any of them! - round out our anticipated success. she, too, is simply amazing - super simple. But Mary McDougall's cookbooks were the first and she is still a great cook. OMG DR MCDOUGALL YOU SAVED MY LIFE AND NOW YOU WILL GIVE ME MY HUSBAND'S HEALTH BACK. I love him so! And you guys too!!

So glad your husband is ready to try it! Wishing him success. That’s amazing you had a page from Dr. McDougall on your wall in 1985! I was 6 years old then… finally discovered McDougall in 2022. Better late than never!

Hi Heather......have been following Dr. McDougall since 2020 during the pandemic. I have literally changed my life simply by looking at John's videos and reading his book, The Starch Solution. Lost a total of 65 lbs over 3 years. I am Jamaican and live in Trinidad and Tobago where we have an abundance of starch-based underground storage organs, such as Irish and sweet potatoes, many varieties of yams, eddoes etc. This is my food of choice.
God bless you all. Owe my life to John and family.

ive eaten a mostly raw vegan diet -- mostly fruit -- for nearly 10 years. I've also implemented and experimented with cooked, low-fat foods. By far, raw food is a life changing experience. Raw foodists write books because it's a life changing experience. People who eat cooked food write books about weight loss. There's a massive difference. I think it's about finding a good combination of BOTH, and doing that, or one of the other. Eating 100% raw food is tough. Is it ideal? Maybe. if we lived on a tropical island like the monkeys do all day long. But is it realistic? I dunno. Take this from me after failing to do it for nearly 10 years now, and I've spent time with the so-called 'experts'. But one thing is for sure -- people who eat a large amount of raw food have a glow like no other, and if you're sick, it will cure you -- initially. I don't care what any doctor says. It's true -- i know because I've done it, and I've lived and worked at many healing centers. But raw food ISN'T for everyone. Ayuveda and TCM confirm this. So beware, and find what's best for you. THe thing is every time the concept of raw food is brought up to Dr McDougall, he compares it to raw starches, and then says starch can't be eaten raw. He then talks about raw food eaten the popular, but very unsuccessful way -- with lots of fat. Well DUH. Neither of these work. The only way to successfully eat a raw food diet is to eat a high fruit, low fat diet. I wish he would talk more about this. This is the version I've done for many years now. It's a pain in the ass, and one things for sure -- you're never full (Dr M is correct there, or you're always on the hunt for food). It takes a lot of training and it feels way better than eating starch all the time, imho, but it has it's downsides. Nothings perfect. that's my experience. You're lighter and more livelier, and definitely more high in the sky, but it costs a lot of money, and requires you to move somewhere warm with available fruit at low prices. no question.

I've been vegetarian for 35 years and vegan for 10 and I get terrible tinnitus, probably have Meniere's disease - vertigo, ear inflammation and leaking fluid - without infection - for a very long time. I normally eat basically what this doctor recommends - a lot of beans, rice, corn tortillas, cooked vegetables etc., not much processed food, but it doesn't cure my lifelong medical issues.
I've been trying to go raw and I can say that it does give me a lighter, more energetic feeling and less inflammation. I added rice and beans and found that the brown rice makes me feel bad. Beans seem ok. Then I tried adding cooked purple potatoes and my hands and feet swelled up badly, and painfully. I'll try it again but things are not looking good for potatoes.
Also, people who eat raw (properly, with enough calories) have a glow that the McDougalls just don't have. Also, gorillas eat raw naturally, and they are extremely strong. So as long as we have access to foods edible in their natural state, we should eat them.

Unfortunately, most scientists today have, almost cult like I would even say, taken the Mediterranean Diet philosophy as the 'gold standard' after the likes of the Lyon study in the mid 90s, as well as noted when olive oil is used in the Blue Zone nations. Rather than look at the Ornish, McDougall, Esselstyn or similar programs (which have been sadly far less publicized internationally than the Lyon study).
Another thing which can confuse people, and even professionals - olive oil is certainly healthier than lard or dripping, and a number of other oils. Which is why it gets RELATIVE health benefits in comparison. Will cardiovascular disease progress slower with olive oil than the animal products and other oils, then? Sure, but it will not stop and reverse the disease, the same way as animal and oil free regimes seem to - and that includes even in the Med, where cardiovascular disease still occurs.
This is not then the same as a whole food plant based, well planned, oil free diet, which is getting the best reversals and possibly, might get the best longevity of all from Ornish, Esselstyn, McDougall etc.
Many nutritionists and dieticians unfortunately are either (a) still ignorant of those researchers and their studies; or (b) will defer to governing bodies and researchers which essentially have ignored or belittled that work. They're often influenced by money and politics that, shall we say, don't like what these have found; or (c) - they know about them, but are too addicted to the likes of olive oil, and/or animal products, that they start minimising and rationalising their effects, rather than honoring the best science.
People, including health professionals, sadly can like hearing good news about their bad habits too.
Hope that answers the question. It's really worth seeing YT for Dr M's and other people like Dr Esselstyn's and Prof Ornish's, presentations and their findings on oil, or check out Dr M's Newsletter content on this (which should be an easy Web search to bring them up).

      @@ceeemm1901 note I said 'healthier' - I didn't say 'healthy'.
You'll get better benefits from drinking water with 5% arsenic than 30% arsenic :) - but indeed, better to have 0% arsenic is right on.
However, because people's bodies and palates don't deal with oils exactly as they do with arsenic - it takes a bit more explaining.

Mary made a great point about the “organic” rice that could still be grown in old cotton fields. I remember when I used to get organic long grain brown rice at ALDI was labeled “USA,” then it went to no country origin. Lately, it’s said “India,” so I’m thinking it was losing sales from consumers who didn’t want to buy the US grown rice, since it might be from the southeast.

    • @JohnDoe-xk1dv

It's not correct that Dr M does not promote exercise - light exercise is recommended (e.g. see the Dr McDougall's Colour Picture Book presentation slides on Exercise, as only one example).
It's not talked about extensively though, for several reasons. There can be dangers of (a) people over exercising on any program, McDougall or not, before they are ready, and causing themselves injuries; (b) exercise shouldn't be used to try and compensate for a poor lifestyle in other areas, which often ends up to be the case; and (c) asking people who are often overweight/obese to start, and/or have pain around starting exercise for this and other reasons, is a big ask. Many find it easier to start exercise when they've first lost excess weight, which is absolutely possible on the standard Program.
Hope that answers your point. I have to concur with Ima - from both the science and Program's point of view, getting the food right first is most important, but actually makes exercise easier later down the line usually.

"People like to hear good news about their bad habits." Blending food damages food but cooking doesn't? Of course cooking damages the food. The only benefit of cooking is that it makes some inedible foods edible and adds calories to the diet. And BTW potatoes should not be eaten raw but sweet potatoes can be. So the foods that can be eaten raw should be eaten raw. And most of us are getting too many calories. I was able to get overweight on my cooked vegan diet as I ate a lot of beans, grains/seeds (no wheat), rice, corn tortillas (Mexican style, not grocery store style). Going raw with a lot of greens and fruits allowed me to lose weight at a steady pace, not too fast, about a pound a week. Adding back cooked beans has slowed the pace a bit.

For most recipes, there shouldn't be a problem reducing levels by a third or a half for the ingredients, if you find the portions are too big. I've done that for several recipes, turned out ok.
Bear in mind too, the simplest Program recipes (and ones which the Dr and Mary have stated openly they eat regularly and like) are the likes of oatmeal and fruit, sweet potatoes and broccoli, beans and rice, mashed potatoes, peas etc. Can't get much simpler than that!
