It sort of amazes me that so many terrific works go unnoticed. Being terrific does not guarantee being noticed. I found this a terrific listen.

This Symphony is the best I have heard of all the music made in the second half of the 20th century. A true masterpiece. An intense first movement with exuberant themes. A brutal second movement with enormous rhythmic force. A third movement with manly lyricism and an explosive finale with great energy. Traces of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bruckner, Dvorak, Elgar, etc. can be seen. But at the same time, there is great thematic, combinatory and timbral creativity and inventiveness and, in general, a structurally impeccable symphony. The composer knows at all times what he wants and the public does not get bored. But the institutions of contemporary music do not dare to allow this type of work to proliferate further in concert halls. We are therefore grateful to conductor Pavle Despalj for having dared to offer the Symphony Orchestra of the Croatian Radio Television this wonderful performance, in order to help raise awareness of this magnificent music of our time, which is on a par with the music of post-romanticism.

OK, one of the greatest works of 20th century music. The finale had me in tears. God and His Angels opening their arms to me.
The love and splendor of this work is beyond belief. I never thought any modern work could do this. Never dry or dull, always
full of surprises, how Sulek deliberately reminds us of other great music in a full blown Pantheon of love and acceptance, inclusion
and openness. Love to all. The Universe cares. We all matter.

Yes, a most optimistic ending to his cycle. I was expecting something more serious but resignated. I like they all.

Composers may parade by as if in a fantastic dream - from Bruckner, Haydn, Martinu and Shostakovich in the first movement to Mozart and Bach in the finale - but Sulek's genius allows us to believe that if none of these composers had ever lived, he would have written his symphony achieving exactly the same result. His valedictory Eighth is a powerful work, the most purely beautiful of those that I've heard, a self-assured, glorious hodgepodge of integrity, inspiration, and yes, originality.

I am consistently finding the music of Sulek very attractive -- this symphony is an example. Glad to have made its acquaintance - and thanks for the opportunity! More of his symphonies, please. . . . . loved those chimes at the conclusion!

This work has so many passages of great beauty and passion. I'm deeply moved. I wish I could hear it in a concert setting.
A great orchestra with a great conductor. The magnificent orchestration deserves a live performance. Profound music.
The only "influence" I hear is , perhaps, the spiritual and God centered ethos of Bruckner. Pretty good company !

Listening again to this Symphony I must admit, that I find it just very good music. It has no more that selfpitying attitude, of the Violin Concerto.

Very impressive. I hear the influence of Beethoven and Brahms, particularly in the finale, as well as an occasional dash of Mahler. Still, this is fundamentally a major 20th century romantic symphony. Merci beaucoup, Corentin.

C'est de la grande musique, injustement méconnue, comme celle de beaucoup d'autres compositeurs du 20 siècle. Merci pour cette découverte.

Listening now. Already fascinated by the flow of snippets of melodies, sometimes with a nod to shostakovich and also Bruckner (as somebody else in this thread already mentioned).

one can analyze "influences" forever and with no profit. Beethoven was "influenced" by Mozart, and Mozart by Bach. So what. I'll say this: I've been listening to Sulek's symphonies for the last several hours while working elsewhere on the 'net, and this music has forced me to stop...and...just...listen...numerous times. I am impressed

I can but wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. So and so was influenced by Brahms; so and so by Rimsky-Korsakov; yaddy yadfy yah.
I might be able to stretch to that a little bit if a particular composer was a teacher of one such composer, but by and large, the comparisons are tedious. People can not be happy that someone achieved something on their own merit........

Great effort to produce a kind of cromatism based on horn winds (reminds Tanhäuser Overture and then, clearly, Hindemith) but not necessarily reaching the climax one should expect - the circle of a circle may be concentric but in this case, somewhat excentric, technically speaking..

All composers stand on shoulders of predecessors, the question is why, what they want to say differently. This I don‘t see in Šuleks works.

The 7th symphony has been released in the CD-set "Sulek: Complete Symphonies" (recording taken from the original 1979 LP), but sadly this set seems not to be available on Amazon, Deezer or SPOTIFY any longer. It has not been uploaded on UA-cam. Since the only recording is supposed to be commercially sold, I can't upload it because of copyright laws. That said, give me your email address, and I will send you the recording by WeTransfer...

I have finally taken time to listen the entire symphony. I think there are too many similarities with Brahms, Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky and a bit of Shostakovich to express more personal language of Šulek, I prefer his sixth symphony to be his best. I have heard the second symphony is generally considered Šulek's best. Do you possibly have that one as well?
