We travel as far as we are allowed on The Chesterfield Canal. The end is closed due to reservoir maintenance and water shortages. But still we walk what we can't cruise.
We are Fran and Rich and along with our two Dogs, Archie and Jess we travel the Canals and Rivers of the UK on our 58ft Narrow Boat.

Jamson dam, Hops too they make nice wreaths but Rich will tell you they make beer better or really Better beer.
Glad to see youre eliminating as much plastic as possible with that lady supplying in bulk. We have a fabulous chain here called the Bulk Barn, they sell everything from soup to nuts and even glass storage jars etc in all shapes and sizes so we buy a lot of stuff there. Jeanette bought some wool from an Alpacca farm also some Mohair Goat wool from another place and made a cardigan to die for in mid winter. The owner makes Santa beards and sells hundreds in the US. Do you spin a lot of wool for your weaving?
You're the first I've seen on that canal it sure is very bucolic, lovely scenery. We have quite a few of those Pin oaks at the Cottage but if you don't rake up the leaves they sure kill the grass. Another lovely vlog thanks so much .
Take care happy cruising ,till next time.
Best regards from me and Canada where 95% have power again after "Fiona"

Hi Ralph. It certainly was a bucolic canal. We were very happy there. I have just started spinning so only using a little to enhance my weaving at the moment, but hoping to do more as I get better

You did the right thing catching the train and walking back to the boat because the countryside was stunning. I was at the Bridge House pub next to the canal at Little Venice earlier this year and I peered into the wonderfully clear water from the bridge and spied massive Carp swimming in the shade. Thanks, guys for that lovely Vlog very enjoyable.❤️

The joy using distilled vinegar is that once the cloth or yarn is dry and the pan you've used is dry the vinegar smell goes away I used to rinse my hair in it when I was a little girl my hair was very long long enough to sit on and very straight and rinsing it in vinegar mixed with water I could take a comb and comb through it and all the tangles would come out

I used to have access to a damson tree, which was great for damson jam but also made great chutney as a substitute for plums. Added colour, but was always a right faff counting them all in to count out all the stones as they are smaller. Damson also makes excellent homemade wine. We once had a sari wrapped round our prop and it was a devil of a job to cut that off. You can still grow on your boat, we used to grow tomatoes and lettuces in troughs onions dye things yellow, you use salt to fix.🍸🥃🥂

Hi Bill, that is a shame there is such a wait. We do use our oven quite a bit. We cook tine loaves of bread in it most winter mornings and yesterday cooked a pie for dinner. Having said that, there are other manufacturers who make stoves with ovens, and you can still cook a lot just on the top of a standard stove. Not much help I guess 🤔

The Pin Oak is Quercus palustris. They do have acorns but because they were generally planted as landscaping trees they often don't have other trees close enough for pollination. The flowers come early april/may and the acorns can take upto 18 months to mature. They can be cross pollinated with a red oak (Quercus rubra). Best wishes.

Was lovely to meet you on here and glad to see the leg on the mend 😊
It's great to see the canal through another's eyes. We love watching your vlog.
Fran can you tell us the name of the refill delivery? We are still on the Chesterfield and I would love to get some refills before we go off again.

Fran I admire you and your foraging skills. If I were to forage I'd end up sick as a dog for eating the wrong berries or worse yet mushrooms. Chris of 'Chris & Shell' narrow boaters is a great forager. He just found a couple of huge eatable mushrooms on his last UA-cam episode.

I don’t know what it is about the UK country side and the beautiful areas the canals go through but I am so drawn to it. I want to go there and roll around in the green and smell all the smells. ❤. So magical.

I sat here at my kitchen table watching this vlog and cutting up figs and tomatoes, and pulling grapes off the vine to go into my food dryer. All foraged from my suburban yard. I felt like a kindred spirit!

It's the prettiest canal in the region. We cycled it when it's length was covered in wild garlic, the picture is now my screen saver! Fantastic cafes and such friendly canal users 💗

The later part of your show today was of particular interest! Restoration projects are very topical subject, I wasn’t sure when you guys were on the Ashby, if you may have ventured up to Moira, and the industrial museum up there…?

We were on the Ashby 4 years ago when we were brand new boaters and sadly didn't get that far as we were so keen to get down to the Thames

Hi Fran and Rich, that looks such a beautiful stretch of canal, very picturesque, sorry to hear you are still suffering with your leg Fran, I suppose it's just a matter of time really, I have arthritis in my knees so I know the feeling, it's nice to know the canal's wildlife is thriving, there's nothing nicer than watching nature, thanks for a lovely vlog, really enjoyed it 😎😎🖐

Welcome to my neck of the woods! It is a beautiful canal and there are a few watering holes at Shireoaks and further on from there. You showed the clutter in the fields around a derelict house - we were once walking past and the owner was cycling up after he'd been to Worksop for his shopping - he was 80+ then so I'm not sure if he's still alive now! Also the beautiful Turnerwood with the big houses - if only........!
All the best to you both and thanks for your lovely vlogs xxx

Thank you Jackie. That is interesting about the derelict house. It certainly looked abandoned, so I guess the poor chap is no longer with us. Thanks for watching

Hops at 9:46! Are they wild ones or just escapees from an old hop yard? I grow them and occasionally brew my own ales. Eels are rare as they were so heavily harvested early on. There are many edible mushrooms in Canada but there are only two that I trust myself to be able to identify. I do like to explore and find things like wild blackberries and strawberries, wild asparagus, wild onions etc. but the last couple of years have naturally put much of a stop to foraging. Still, what should I find growing in my flower beds the last two years but garlic mustard, rocket (arugula) and burgeoning patches of wild strawberries and blackberries (black raspberries...the ones armed with little bayonets!). I planted none of these! It's like they missed me and decided to visit and stay! I fondly recall a visit to the east coast of Canada (Prince Edward Island) where I walked the beach one afternoon when the tide was out and I literally gathered my supper. All I added was a bottle of white wine!

That all sounds wonderful, such great gifts of nature. We assume these hops were escapees as there were so many of them in this area.

It is a very old fashioned syrup with spices. Here is the recipe I use. It really does keep colds etc at bay. I swear by it.
