I'm an American who has been living in Japan for three years now, and I LOVE Japanese-style breakfast. I'll choose it over western-style breakfast any day. I don't usually have time to make it in the morning so I usually have it for dinner instead lol
The reason I love Japanese cooking is because it does not hurt my stomach. Always fresh and healthy. I lost 50lbs in mitoshi when I lived in japan. So I'm hoping to learn how to cook some Japanese recipies.
For everyone complaining that they don't have time in the mornings, on the weekend you can make a huge batch of most of these things, portion them out, and freeze them for several months ahead of time. Soups and rice especially freeze really well. The things that don't freeze well, like the salad, don't take long to make. You can also pre-shred the greens and nori, and pre-mix the dressing and keep those items in the fridge on a weekly basis. This is how I meal prep most of my meals and it's really convenient for when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to cook. Great video btw! I love seeing what other countries eat for breakfast. American breakfast can get really boring sometimes haha.
This every morning, with some Japanese Lofi and hot green tea! The Dream! Before Covid-19 I was working for a Sushi Company here in the US, called Genji. In less than six months I was hooked on how food is made in the Japanese way. Just washing the rice alone always put my mind in a state of Zin, cutting all my veg's and then learning how to cut the different types of fish. Now that Covid-19 is easing some in the U.S. I wanted to get back into cooking proper Japanese food so I am thinking of a Food Truck. I've always had a love for Japanese culture, language, food, and some of the ways they live day to day. Miwasan, arigatōgozaimashita!

Hello from America! My Grandmother was from Hokkaido and lived with my parents and I until she passed at home surrounded by family. She used to make a breakfast very similar to this, but with the addition of Natto. Of course, always Miso soup with everything. This video reminds me of her and makes me miss her so much! We’ve never really had a lot of Japanese food before. It’s delicious! So far we’ve tried omelettes with vegetables we don’t usually use, and rice with seasonings that are new to us. Last night, I marinated our salmon in salt and sugar and today, we’re looking forward to trying it. The texture of the raw fish is much firmer after marinating, just as you said. When I visit Japan I always stay in Ryokans and one of my favorite things to look forward to was enjoying breakfast and interacting with the owners of the Ryokan in the morning. Love how fresh and simplistic but full of flavor Japanese breakfast are.
Simplistic? Wouldn't call it like that if your country's staple breakfast was bread or cereals, and if you wanna do really healthy some oats with fruits, nuts and seeds or a smoothie bowl and then we're talking about doing much effort for breakfast. XD
Being a Middle Easterner, our food can be "complicated" and very rich and heavy. I've been adopting Japanese style cooking lately and got more into salmon (cooking it in my instant pot) I can tell that the Japanese diet/meals are much healthier and simpler (well, I wanted an excuse to add Sake to my meals 😉). I've been making the rice overnight also since a day old rice has been very helpful in many dishes 👍👍
Middle Eastern food is so good! I personally am a BIG fan of traditional Afghan cuisine :] Also, totally get it! I'm Italian and our food tends to be very heavy. I love lighter meals throughout the day, especially during my practice.

It might be close to the one I'm used to since I'm from Iraq, and we cook many Persian dishes at certain regions of my Homeland. And since you're Italian, that is my ultimate comfort food.. I’m an American and Japanese Breakfast is my go to breakfast just Tomagoyaki, homemade pickled Daikon or carrots, rice I made the day before, and backed cod or salmon, with either miso soup, or canned chicken noodle soup depending on if I want to actually cook but I’ve actually been losing weight eating this instead of cereal I feel great and healthy
@@gm.5615 That is also not correct, less salt = more sugar. So you're substituting one thing for something equally as bad. Also, it's not well balanced either. Most of their breakfast is empty calories, except for an occasional natto. Also, it's a misconception that they eat sushi all the time...most of their food is just like ours, prepackaged just heat it up stuff.
😍I loved breakfast when we lived on Okinawa...not being an eggs, bacon, or cereal in the morning type of person, I loved having breakfast with my neighbor after the kids woke up, had their typical American breakfast, and my husband left for work...it was beautiful sharing the experiences often and had I known for sure we could have survived on SOFA status, I would still be there today 30 years later🤗

@@maretvilla1531 Well I don't think cooked salmon overnight and reheated would taste closely as good. Similar for miso soup also. And even rice, unless you make a fried rice out of it which again takes more time. Of course for the rice having a rice cooker with a timer function really helps.
Look this. Simple, easy. Taste good and minimal seasoning. I tried to season the fish with soy sauce, sugar. It actually tasted worse than just sugar and salt. Very interesting
I loved off of this in the Philippines 😁 I worked for a US call center and was sent to train and lived in a hotel for 2 months. we worked US hours and only breakfast was available at my dinner so I ate this almost every "night". Love it thank you!
I’m very fortunate to have visited Japan and I was really impressed with the cuisine….but I too was confused as to the order I should eat what was set out on the table. My hosts however were very gracious and put me at my ease telling me to just eat and enjoy! Which I did!

Similar like in my home. However, before using Nori, we dry the sheets over the flame of the stove. It then is easier to crumble the Nori. Also, we make Dashi from scratch. Greetings from Germany.

Breakfast is so different around the World. This dish is something I would eat for lunch, because I haven't got time in the morning to do it. My breakfast is usually two boiled eggs with a toast or something I could prepare in 5 minutes.

Good morning Miwa-san....its morning here on Westcoast of Canada. I love traditional Japanese breakfasts...reminds me of my Dad so much. He always said it is the most healthy way to start the day. I really have to make effort to make this for myself more often. I’ve never added sugar when I make shio salmon as my mother didn’t either so I’m most curious to try this now. I tried with just salt, but it turns out a little dry and salty. sugar worked very well for me! I hope you will try it too! wakame in the salad is my another staple too! my kids prefer nori so I often switch to nori! I grew up eating eggs and some kind of pork. Bacon, ham, sausage, you get the idea. As I have traveled in the Military, I experienced small bits and pieces of other cultures. I love the idea of savory dishes for breakfast and the variety of textures and flavors. I am just frustrated that fresh seafood is near impossible to come by where I live now in Southern Tennessee. When I was in a hotel in Tokyo, that's what I really had for breakfast. I was very surprised and asked the Japanese guy who was sitting next to me in the restaurant if I had the right time on my watch, if it was morning or already noon?! He smiled and said that in Japan they eat salmon around the clock! Super, very nutritious and less caloric than sausages! 🥢🍣😍
Miwa San! I never thought of warming up lettuce but the dressing and adding nori sounds delicious! We love salted salmon (I love daikon oroshi) with rice and miso soup for breakfast!
I just had the same breakfast in this morning! haha lettuce is not soft all the way. it will still have a crunchiness left, but holds up the dressing better than raw form! I hope you will give it a shot one day for the simple side dish!
Hi. I use a glass (my preference) plate and it works just fine when microwaving. I hardly ever use plastic wrap anymore. I microwave everything from vegetables to meat to warm up and precook before stir frying. I use a gentle warming setting for meat.
Hello from Connecticut! really love the simplicity of the cooking and how nourishing the food looks. It’s really a clean, wholesome way of eating instead of the sugar laden pancakes/waffles/cereal/bacon that is often preferred here in the US that really weighs you down. Even the color of the salmon screams nourishment 😋

It doesn’t look time consuming at all, so long as one preps some of the things the night before. I’m sure cooking times are similar to things I already make here in the morning. The breakfast looks very delicious.

1:48 this. Miso soup is so forgiving in terms of add-ons. You can use wide range of veggies and I usually put in whatever excess of them from a specific dish I cooked before. Very useful, all-rounder soup to be honest.
I wish I could live in Japan. I've been there a few times and always had wonderful experiences; how could you not in such an amazing country filled with gentle, friendly people? And videos like this make me want to knock down my house, and build a new one based on tatami mat sizes and live the best Japanese life I can in Australia. Yummy! I’ll definitely be trying the salmon like this. Always looking for new ways to make it. So far my favorite is in a sauce made with heavy cream, spinach and sun dried tomatoes. I usually just salt, pepper and fry for simplicity but I’ve never soaked it before. Loved your video, thank you!
Interesting way to salt the salmon. I only know how to salt them directly with salt and leave them in kitchenpaper in the fridge. I'll try this out! My daughter loves salmon. I saw on amazon a dish that let's you make grilled fish in the microwave. I want to try that out since I always look to make cooking easier. Me and my daughter don't mind fish in the morning but my husband complains that he hates the smell of fish so early. Although I can make rice on the stove I always use my simple rice cooker. I got it when I start living on my own from my grandmother about 16 years ago and it still works :) Here we never heat up lettuce so I was surprised that you heated it up. I would have mixed the dressing, shred the nori and put it straight on the table, though I remember my grandfather telling me that when he was little there was a dish called stewed lettuce but that is pretty rare nowadays.
your rice cooker are very durable!!! I kinda understand how your husband feels! the fish smell is very potent! even though I love grilled fish, I still think what if this smell sticks to the outfit and my cloths is going to smell like a fish all day! haha stewed lettuce... I made my first Japanese Breakfast I really enjoyed it I have no Kombu or the dashi so it was just miso I had some pickle veggies and white rice and a can of kippers I did have green onions broccoli and carrots with wakima sea weed and silk tofu I'm in the US in Alabama difficult to find ingredients it was a wonderful breakfast thank you so much really appreciate you
I had a big stomach surgery and even though sadly I can barely eat rice, all these other dishes are the best choices my doctor said I could make food wise! Guess its a good excuse for more delicous food hehe. Thank you for sharing this recipie!

Veggies rice and salmon for breakfast is really balanced carbs in rice, vitamin c and ginger in veggies many vitamins in salmon

I’m very fortunate to have visited Japan and I was really impressed with the cuisine….but I too was confused as to the order I should eat what was set out on the table. My hosts however were very gracious and put me at my ease telling me to just eat and enjoy! Which I did!

Similar like in my home. However, before using Nori, we dry the sheets over the flame of the stove. It then is easier to crumble the Nori. Also, we make Dashi from scratch.

Breakfast is so different around the World. This dish is something I would eat for lunch, because I haven't got time in the morning to do it. My breakfast is usually two boiled eggs with a toast or something I could prepare in 5 minutes.

Good morning Miwa-san....its morning here on Westcoast of Canada. I love traditional Japanese breakfasts...reminds me of my Dad so much. He always said it is the most healthy way to start the day. I really have to make effort to make this for myself more often. I’ve never added sugar when I make shio salmon as my mother didn’t either so I’m most curious to try this now. Great idea to add dry nori sheets to salad and so simple. I always soak wakame and add to my salad but I’m going to try your way next time. Thank you so much for your great ideas. Kio tsukete 👋🏼😊🇨🇦
I tried with just salt, but it turns out a little dry and salty. sugar worked very well for me! I hope you will try it too!

I grew up eating eggs and some kind of pork. Bacon, ham, sausage, you get the idea. As I have traveled in the Military, I experienced small bits and pieces of other cultures.
I love the idea of savory dishes for breakfast and the variety of textures and flavors.
I am just frustrated that fresh seafood is near impossible to come by where I live now in Southern Tennessee. I think I could eat fresh seafood every day.

When I was in a hotel in Tokyo, that's what I really had for breakfast. I was very surprised and asked the Japanese guy who was sitting next to me in the restaurant if I had the right time on my watch, if it was morning or already noon?! He smiled and said that in Japan they eat salmon around the clock! Super, very nutritious and less caloric than sausages! 🥢🍣😍

Miwa San! I never thought of warming up lettuce but the dressing and adding nori sounds delicious! We love salted salmon (I love daikon oroshi) with rice and miso soup for breakfast!
I just had the same breakfast in this morning! haha
lettuce is not soft all the way. it will still have a crunchiness left, but holds up the dressing better than raw form! I hope you will give it a shot one day for the simple side dish!
Hi. I use a glass (my preference) plate and it works just fine when microwaving. I hardly ever use plastic wrap anymore. I microwave everything from vegetables to meat to warm up and precook before stir frying. I use a gentle warming setting for meat.

Hello from Connecticut! really love the simplicity of the cooking and how nourishing the food looks. It’s really a clean, wholesome way of eating instead of the sugar laden pancakes/waffles/cereal/bacon that is often preferred here in the US that really weighs you down. It doesn’t look time consuming at all, so long as one preps some of the things the night before. I’m sure cooking times are similar to things I already make here in the morning. The breakfast looks very delicious.

1:48 this. Miso soup is so forgiving in terms of add-ons. You can use wide range of veggies and I usually put in whatever excess of them from a specific dish I cooked before. Very useful, all-rounder soup to be honest.

I wish I could live in Japan. I've been there a few times and always had wonderful experiences; how could you not in such an amazing country filled with gentle, friendly people? And videos like this make me want to knock down my house, and build a new one based on tatami mat sizes and live the best Japanese life I can in Australia. Interesting way to salt the salmon. I only know how to salt them directly with salt and leave them in kitchenpaper in the fridge. I'll try this out! My daughter loves salmon. I saw on amazon a dish that let's you make grilled fish in the microwave. I want to try that out since I always look to make cooking easier. Me and my daughter don't mind fish in the morning but my husband complains that he hates the smell of fish so early. Although I can make rice on the stove I always use my simple rice cooker. I got it when I start living on my own from my grandmother about 16 years ago and it still works :) Here we never heat up lettuce so I was surprised that you heated it up. I would have mixed the dressing, shred the nori and put it straight on the table, though I remember my grandfather telling me that when he was little there was a dish called stewed lettuce but that is pretty rare nowadays.
your rice cooker are very durable!!! I kinda understand how your husband feels! the fish smell is very potent! even though I love grilled fish, I still think what if this smell sticks to the outfit and my cloths is going to smell like a fish all day! haha

I made my first Japanese Breakfast I really enjoyed it I have no Kombu or the dashi so it was just miso I had some pickle veggies and white rice and a can of kippers I did have green onions broccoli and carrots with wakima sea weed and silk tofu I'm in the US in Alabama difficult to find ingredients it was a wonderful breakfast thank you so much really appreciate you
I had a big stomach surgery and even though sadly I can barely eat rice, all these other dishes are the best choices my doctor said I could make food wise! Guess its a good excuse for more delicous food hehe. Thank you for sharing this recipie!
