    His phrasing and use of the Lydian Dominant mode was so much more apparent in the 90's. His note choices were so much more exotic with some chromatisicm. Today its mainly natural minor, Phyrigian, Egyptian minor 3 note per string 32nd note furries which tend to be more diatonic in nature. It's not bad but his playing today sounds more cliché. But his solo on The Looking Glass and Lost Not Forgotten seem to harken back to the days of old.

    He was such a unique guitarist back then. He still is now but his phrasing has changed a lot and he's a little more robotic.

    I had almost forgotten how phenomenal of a player Petrucci was/is. I grew up with this version of him, and lo and behold, he was miles better and more unique back then than the past 10+ years. Thank you for uploading! This was a trip down memory lane. A good one.

    That's what I'm talkin bout! Hey was so fluid/phrase heavy/chromatic/experimental with the occasional jazz harmonies it was outta this world. This video is the perfect example of that. Nowadays, he's all about playing as fast as possible, which I still appreciate, but the cool note choice just isn't as prominent. BTW-I remember this jam was an interlude between songs during the Awake tour. When Jordan joined the band, I was hoping the experimentation would be elevated to another level

    I think we can all agree that early Petrucci was like a monster Progressive/Fusion guitar player. Absolutely versatile with killer chops and phrases. I wish he does return to this style,I like what he does now but whenever I listen back to this I go like "Now this is John Petrucci". He seriously should consider getting his old side back with him stylistically and musically as well. Really hope he brings up this type of stuff in his new solo album,but it's just a hope I guess...

    Really wish he would go back to Ibanez, or at least get rid of his new compressed Djent sound he has been moving to with extreme dropped tuning. Come back to a more natural sound with just the gain turned up.

    You're probably right. That may be a USRG30 with the tension free neck. I used to work for Hoshino, and I believe that they made them at that time.

    Nope. DT played it live a fair amount on the I&M tour and JP used his rough demo (drum machine, easy keys) for NAMM and clinics back then. The live version with MP, JM ahd KM absolutely SLAYS this version.

    Laney is part of the Hoshino family (Ibanez, Tama Drums, other bands) and especially back then JP would have used gear that was available @ NAMM as opposed to the effort & cost of flying out his own gear.

  • @DMFChavez
    @DMFChavez 14 років тому

    @MrKiller92 he plays just as cleanly, if not cleaner these days, but he uses a much more processed lead sound now, and shredding with the delay he uses makes it sound a wee bit sloppier than it actually is

  • @scarred2112
    @scarred2112 14 років тому

    That's actually why l liked DT with Derek on keys. *Not* coming from a heavy prog/instrumental background, he brought a Jazz/Fusion side to the band that was really interesting. On the "Mind Control" bootleg (1-24-95 Japan) they play a jazzy, funky outro to "Take The Time" that's by far the best "live improvisation" I've ever hear from them.

    DUDE HE LOOKS LIKE A TEENAGER OR SOMETHING HERE , AND STILL AWESOME ,tHE ONLY PETRUCCI I HAVE HEARD UNTIL NOW IS HIS NEW STUFF ( SUSPENDED ANIMATION IS THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER HEARD) BUT THIS IS JUST AWESOME!

    • @GuillermoSmyser
      @GuillermoSmyser 8 років тому

      Oh dude! His stuff before Suspended Animation is some of the best!
      Images and Words, Awake, Scenes from a Memory. 3 of the best if not THE best Dream Theater albums. Liquid Tension Experiment is awesome too.
      You can probably find clips from the live in Tokyo that looks a lot like this. Some of the jams on his instructional dvd Rock Discipline is a lot like this too.

    Considering the fairly big change between Black Clouds going to Dramatic Turn, I think we are at least on the way back to a side of him more like this: more jazzy, progressive.
    I honestly think Portnoy was a big metal influence and Mangini is more a progressive flavor being added to the band. Obviously JP has a big metal side but Portnoy was the one that originally showed him and JMX metal, before they were more just progressive.
