Wilson makes some of the best Quality irons in the world. I have a set of the Staff model CB. I've played Ping Zing 2 , Cobra and Callaway. Wilson by far is the best
Yes, I agree they make really good stuff and the irons have been getting taken seriously again in the last few years, and rightly so. Even the driver which they have struggled for credibility with for a long time is now held in high regard. I really think Wilson could become a real force again like it used to be.
Despite the manufacturers blurb im not really sure what you can alter that much on a cb blade style iron. I still play with callaway x forged 2009 irons , ive just replaced the much heavier S400 shaft with a SL one . I also have a set of 'forgiving ' P790 but score better with the old boys !!
I know, with better player's clubs, it's effectively a fairly thin block of metal coming into contact with a golf ball and there is only so much you can do with that.
Same here. Have a 2023 set of p790s but lately my older Wilson fg v6’s are back in the bag. Just hit these Wilson’s soooooo good compared to any others. The 790’s likely will be going up for sale and I’ll snag the newer cbs since my v6’s are pretty worn on the grooves
Interesting stuff …. I think equipment has improved in the last 20+ years but maybe not as much as the marketing departments would have us believe. That’s their job I suppose but pretty much loft is the biggest factor especially in relation to distance.
I own a set of Wilson Staff Progressives from 1994 which were also designed by Robert Mendralla, but were forged and not cast like the RMs. I rarely golfed in the 2000s until recently when I started playing with my wife after retirement. They still feel and work well in my opinion. I can´t compare them to the modern day clubs, but I am not looking to finely hone my game like I did back when they were new.
Thanks for watching, funny I can’t quite recall those exact clubs but then I didn’t start working at North Berwick West until 1995, so they were maybe just before I got really interested in clubs. You’d definitely find a lot of distance if you moved to some kind of forged player’s distance iron, or maybe get back to where you were in 1994 at least.
I have a set of Wilson Staff CBs R300 steel Dynamic Gold. I tried the old Wilson Staff Tour with steel R-flex fatshaft all those years ago. The 7 iron didn't go too high and dead straight for 150 yards. I wished I would have bought them off the guy giving me lessons seeing they were for sale. I could have seen myself with a high control game versus high offset GI irons with big draws. But it could have been bad also, but I think they were good irons in the day.
you really struggled hitting the CB 4 iron, so not sure how you came to the conclusion that it felt better... looks is subjective- I don't need all the dressing on an iron, the simpler the better. I have a set of the RM's and loft to loft, there is no different in distance or spin, but ocnsistency, the older clubs, to me, are much better than the newr stuff. No disrespect, but maybe have a better ball striker do this test. D9's are jacked, compare the D9 7 iron to the RM 6 iron.

Yes, it's definitely improved but as you say loft is crucial for like for like comparisons.

Yes, they were, and I suppose, still are good clubs. You've got a nice set now, the CBs are really nice.
Man, those RM’s were really great to hit and felt amazing.
Yes, they were really nice. I kept them as a back up set, still look pretty good even now and really soft.

Thanks for that
Irons have hardly improved, just jacked up lofts. The older pings are as good as anything new....built to last and are great irons
Yes, hard to beat a set of Pings, any model, they don't muck about with golf clubs. Brilliant quality and designs that properly work.
