I'm pretty sure it's called steel guitar solely because of the bar they hold to slide. This could have been substituted with anything really. They used regular acoustic guitars before these came out and the first ones to come out were made by RickenBacher and were made out of cast aluminum making them the very first electric guitar called the Frying pan.
