I’ve been saying this for so long, everyone knows who Ryan Gosling is but he’s so underrated in terms of actually how good an actor he is, he is incredible in every movie he is in and has great range from comedy to drama to thriller
Jake MacDonagh Subtle acting seems so easy, so effortless, that people label it as a bad acting sometimes, and this is something that pisses me off. Subtle acting requires so much focus, concentration, control of every little facial expression and movement. It's sometimes harder than expressive acting, and it needs a really great actor to pull something like that off. Ryan is one of those actors who is able to communicate through the smallest expressions, he is brilliant at that. What is amazing that he is also able to be flashy and very expressive too, which is brilliant showcase of his wide range.
He does a fine job but at crucial moments he fails to convey crucial emotions where it is needed. When it is not needed i'm fine with it. But he has not the range to carry most drama's which makes him seem like blend. Eventhough you can see there is thought behind it, its the result that matters and I am not in the slightest moved by his botox facial expressions and I feel that is also a feature u need to have as a good actor. Emotional expressive range. Be able to play well outside your comfort zone. Break your own rules. Not only star in any movie, but be good in some.
For ages I’ve said Ryan Gosling’s acting is so underrated. His subtle movements are genius and often overlooked, so happy this video was made highlighting it.
MM 1992 Aw man every time! I think La la land is one of the best examples of this (maybe just because I’ve seen it 10 times 😂) Definitely disappointed when he missed out on best actor that year
Not only is Ryan Gosling a really good dramatic actor but he also can do comedy exceedingly well. His performance in the Nice Guys was really funny, especially the bathroom stall scene.
Joaquin Phoenix is no doubt a great actor but you are really underselling the quality of Ryan Gosling's acting talent. To me it seems like you haven't seen either of those two movies because in those movies he plays very different characters very well.
Did you even read what i replied i didn't say anything about your acting. As a side note Ryan Gosling is way more than a good looking actor he is an incredible actor but obviously not on the level of Daniel Day-Lewis.
I personally think Jake is better than Leonardo Dicaprio - especially his performances in Nightcrawler, Southpaw, Okja and Stronger. It's weird but when I see Jake on screen, especially in those four films I mentioned, I dont recognise him - I only see the character he is playing. That's how convincing his performances are.
Simba J... Very true... Jake Gyllenhaal vanishes completely and the character he plays grows on us.. And that is very rare in actor's.. Although Ryan is a good actor but at times it feels like he's playing the same character again. That's why I feel that Jake is a gem in acting.
Vinit Choudhari I agree with what you're saying about Ryan. Although I love Ryan's work, occasionally his personality bleeds into the characters he is playing and sometimes it feels like you're watching the same person - in particular in La La Land and the Nice Guys.
Yesss Ryan is so underrated. Most people talk about his looks rather than his amazing talent. He is my all time favorite actor and I wished more people gave him credit
I never thought I'd see a video about acting where Ryan Gosling is actually the main focus. He's legit one of the most underrated actors of all time. He's never out of place wherever you put him, and he's such a professional and dedicated performer. Looking forward to his official consacration which, actually, is not even necessary at this point. He's a legend already. Nice video by the way, really loved your thesis and how you demonstrated it.
If you haven't then please watch *Half Nelson*. It's not only a great little movie, but also a mesmerizing performance from Gosling that got him his first Academy Award nomination. People that say he's a one note actor simply has not seen enough of his movies. Gosling just does what is called "Less is more" acting and a lot of actors could learn from that.
As an actor I feel Ryan Gosling is sooo underrated, people complain about him doing the same face over and over again but they don't see that all of those faces express really different and understandable feelings, he's a great actor
Great video Ryan Gosling is a Phenomenal actor and underrated he’s one of my favorites. He’s more than those Hey Girl Memes and more than just another handsome heartthrob. He has a long great career ahead of him.
Weird Blue Valentine is not mentioned in this video. One of his best performances ever. Ryan is the rare case that he's got the fame he deserves but extremely underrated despite most of his works are indie arthouse movies.
Blade Runner 2049 is such an amazing example of this, like you state. It was one of the only movies where I felt, intrinsically, the turmoil and emotions that K/Joe had going through him. At nearly every critical plot point K stays silent, almost motionless, but there are slight tells that we as humans can tell the best, the look in his eyes, a twitch of the mouth, the shape of his eyebrows. I rarely come across a film and an actor that portrays such complex and built-up emotions so clearly without any verbal intervention.
I agree with literally everything you said in this video! Ryan gosling has been an underrated actor for years. It‘s probably because of his good looks and appearence in some bad movies like the notebook and crazy stupid love. He‘s usually playing a more or less twisted character because these are the most difficult characters to pull off and he‘s one of the few who are up to the task.
Was waiting for you to mention Blue Valentine, because he was absolutely SPECTACULAR in it. He is one of the greatest in Hollywood, and isn’t getting the recognition he deserves imo. Hope he’ll continue making awesome movies in the future.
Great essay! This man deserves to be celebrated. I officially joined the Gosling Fan Club after 'The Nice Guys' which wAS AWESOOOOOME. And his performance was my favourite part of it.
Thank you!! I've been saying this for a while now; ever since I saw Lars and the Real Girl i knew what a genius he really was as an actor. drive, blue valentine, and blade runner 2049 are some of the most innovative films as of today. it's a shame he's either cast as THE HOT GUY in a huge movie everyone sees or as a really beautifully performed movie that flies under the radar (see: the nice guys). glad to see one of my favorite youtube essayists giving him the love he deserves!
Once I watched Papyrus (SNL short), I realized that Ryan is a phenomenal actor. His ability to portray a bizarre character in such a serious manner was impressive. He takes all of his roles seriously and becomes them.
At the beginning of the video i thought you were joking, but you are totally right with Ryan, he is an excellent actor who knows how to move and no only cry or yell. Great video Karsten.
Every Ryan Gosling movie is basically him being a loner, ascends throughout the movie and becomes a hero in the end whilst staring at something every 2 minutes, and I love that. Dude is underrated
Your videos are incredible and are worded so eloquently. Your analysis of movies, scripts and actors is impeccable! Thank you for giving me a whole new perspective on film :)
I tell people Ryan Gosling is my favorite actor and people don't seem to understand how. He's simply incredible, there has never been a movie of his I didn't enjoy watching. He never mails in a performance and never goes over the top. Blue Valentine is my favorite movie of all time
He is really growing on me, after The Nice Guy’s and then Blade Runner his performance are very substantial with his subtle expressions. Great piece, good job!
It is his eyes to me and I am not sure from everything I have read that the character in Crazy Stupid Love is like him and he says it is not him. He didn't like the part about picking up girls. He admits to having only 3 actual girlfriends, including Eva, and I don't think any other women even mentioned with him claims they were an item.
Very well said. All great actors are those who’ve made me fall in love with the characters but not the actors themselves. The actor and the character are like totally different persons. The most amazing and weirdest feeling of watching great acting is that you cannot relate one character to another although they are played by the same actor. Watching different movies played by the same actor is like going in and out different worlds he introduces to me.
Totally agree with what you said, the "science" or methodology of acting has roots in the embodiment of the actor wich becomes the character, body talks, when you are DOING wich is the same as acting , the cues are just props.
Loved this video, I also feel like Ryan Gosling is a person that has 100 different personalities and each personality is a new movie, since his acting is so consistently good.
Ryan will always be one of my favorite actors. Not just the fact he's leading my favorite movie of almost every year (Drive, the Nice Guys, Blade Runner 2049, Place Beyond the Pines, etc.), but exactly that as stated by technique of show, don't tell. His movements show off who he is and does, and doesn't need to say it to explain who he is.
Great video! I feel that Ryan is underappreciated, or even underrated, as an actor (but not as a celebrity) because most people tend to think of him as a Taylor Lautner/Channing Tatum/whoever. It's nice to see people appreciating him more!
everytime i describe ryan goslings acting style, i will usually describe it as “physical” because he dosnt use his words very often but he is capable of being understood to the point where the character is believable and interesting.
personally, my favorite actors (who happen to be generally underrated) are both Ryan Gosling and Oscar Issac. Oscar Issac really shined in "Inside Llewelyn Davis" as he showed similar acting skills stated in your video. Great work! Loved it!
I wasnt even aware Ryan Gosling existed, except hearing his name a few times, until a year ago. I watched "Drive" for the first time and was amazed by the main actors performance, turning out to be Ryan. I then saw him in another movie (cant recall which) and after looking through his filmography noticed I'd seen him quite some times before. This really shows how convincing his performance, and why he now (after watching lalaland) my favourite actor is!
I keep saying that Ryan Gosling is my man crush lol! He is a fantastic actor that is able to display so much emotion with very little dialogue. He is one of my favorites as well and I loved La La Land, Drive, and of course Blade Runner 2049. Great video and subscribed!
Great video! I absolutely LOOOVE your channel!!! Also, who else is SUPER excited about Ryan Gosling's upcoming "First Man" movie about Neil Armstrong!!! 😄✋😄
ryan gosling has such an ironic smile. Everytime he smiles, i just KNOW he is thinking something sarcastic lmao Don't know why i get that impression from him, but i like it
I've been arguing about how great Gosling is for years. What really cemented it was seeing Drive for the first time, especially after associating him as just the pretty face from The Notebook. Now, at least three of my favorite movies of the past couple years all star Gosling
love this - 99% agree, though he's nothing like his character in crazy stupid love apart from the fact that his character's key trait is being attractive/sexy which to the average person, they'd think of ryan that way also. I also want to add that he does this really well in half nelson as well.
I think no one gave him the respect he deserved because he starred in "The Notebook" and those Rom Coms make people who hate them dismiss the acting strengths of the male actors in those films. It happened to Matthew McConaughey as well. Now, he is well-established. Great video!
Ryan is my favorite actor like it’s weird because i didn’t like the notebook but I thought he was the best part about it then I remember watching drive and fell in love with his acting
Great video! I really enjoyed it! I made a video partially about Ryan on my channel, that's not the point, just showing I love him enough to script and write a video about him. I believe some of his best performances were in The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine, and Half Nelson, to name a few that weren't mentioned explicitly (i know you showed clips from TPBtP but I dont recall a mention) in the video. His comedic chops are so underrated, he plays one of the funniest characters of all time in The Nice Guys.
I love the title. It almost sounds like you're saying "THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU SHOULD ACT!" I know you aren't but it still reads kind of funny, but great video mate
I felt the same way about Jake Gyllenhall's performance in Nightcrawler. I forgot I was watching an actor act. Also, Sean Penn did the same thing in Sweet and Lowdown. Completely became another person.
Best example of this is Half Nelson in which most dialogue is improv. The writers/directors only gave them the setting and the premise, but the dialogue was mostly unscripted, he became the character. It won Gosling an Academy Award nomination.
Wonderful. You’d think that video essays would become an over saturated thing, but I think it’s like any other kind of movie reviewing and commentary. There’s always room for more voices, so long as they have a new perspective.
Great video and why I believe he’s the best actor of the ‘new generation’ of A list actors! Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, Nicolas Hoult etc are all good but they’re not Gosling good! Only criticism is you totally ignored his performance in Blue Valentine which was absolutely one of his best! He shows true development and evolution in a single character without changing the character themselves- a brilliant and often overlooked performance.

Another great movie that truly satisfies your hypothesis is Only God Forgives
I’ve been saying this for so long, everyone knows who Ryan Gosling is but he’s so underrated in terms of actually how good an actor he is, he is incredible in every movie he is in and has great range from comedy to drama to thriller
Jake MacDonagh yesss 🙌🏼🙌🏼 he’s one of my favorite actors, but when I say that, I feel like people asume it’s just because he’s hot...

Bruce Snow Yes definitely agree
I've felt the same way for so long dude
He does a fine job but at crucial moments he fails to convey crucial emotions where it is needed. When it is not needed i'm fine with it. His performance in Blue Valentine is outstanding and sadly very underrated.
I can't believe he wasn't nominated for an oscar for that.
I can
That film wrecked my heart. The actress was also top notch. (Going to go google her name now)
Every Ryan Gosling hater I knows love him in that film, and that’s saying a lot.
One of the saddest endings I've seen too. So real
For ages I’ve said Ryan Gosling’s acting is so underrated. His subtle movements are genius and often overlooked, so happy this video was made highlighting it.
Exactly, that nod and smile at the end of La la land was heart breaking.
MM 1992 Aw man every time! I think La la land is one of the best examples of this (maybe just because I’ve seen it 10 times 😂) Definitely disappointed when he missed out on best actor that year
Well I hope you are satisfied by how much he appeared in memes recently
Ryan internalises emotions and acts with his eyes, he is a subtle actor with great screen presence!
MM 127 this is what I was looking for
Because of this, I think his best performance was in drive!
Not only is Ryan Gosling a really good dramatic actor but he also can do comedy exceedingly well. His performance in the Nice Guys was really funny, especially the bathroom stall scene.
Austin Holden he was hilarious. And in blade runner he's stone cold and it's amazing.
Austin Holden Yes! Exactly! My favourite of all his performances. Though I am yet to see Lars and The Real Girl. (That's the name right?)
Joaquin Phoenix is no doubt a great actor but you are really underselling the quality of Ryan Gosling's acting talent. To me it seems like you haven't seen either of those two movies because in those movies he plays very different characters very well.

lol quit hating on Gosling lil man.. he's amazing stop denying it
I have argued in favor of Ryan to so many acting purists, it’s upsetting how few people respect him.
Patrick Hogan Why even listen to anyone uptight enough to be classified as a "purist" (eew).
Jake Gyllenhaal would be interesting to look at as well!
He's just as underrated as Gosling. People think they're just eye candy, but they are amazing at their craft.
Thank you mentioning Jake Gyllenhaal
I personally think Jake is better than Leonardo Dicaprio - especially his performances in Nightcrawler, Southpaw, Okja and Stronger. It's weird but when I see Jake on screen, especially in those four films I mentioned, I dont recognise him - I only see the character he is playing. That's how convincing his performances are.

Gosling is honestly one of my favourite actors. He’s so underrated
his comedic timing is unmatched.
Yesss Ryan is so underrated. Most people talk about his looks rather than his amazing talent. He is my all time favorite actor and I wished more people gave him credit
MyGreenCrystals Heck that made me disinterested in watching his movies at first. I mean-ahem...not interested in watching his movie.
Ryan Gosling really is an underrated actor. His work is consistently stunning
I have watched La La Land so many times and every single time i find a new little Ryan movement that adds perfectly to the scene.
I never thought I'd see a video about acting where Ryan Gosling is actually the main focus. He's legit one of the most underrated actors of all time. My favorite film of his is The Place Beyond the Pines. Also, the bathroom scene in Half Nelson is some of his finest work.
The Big Short and La La Land were also great ones that come to mind
Great video Ryan Gosling is a Phenomenal actor and underrated he’s one of my favorites.
He’s more than those Hey Girl Memes and more than just another handsome heartthrob. He has a long great career ahead of him.
Drive!! One of his best performances and one of my favorite films.
Weird Blue Valentine is not mentioned in this video. One of his best performances ever. Ryan is the rare case that he's got the fame he deserves but extremely underrated despite most of his works are indie arthouse movies.
Ryan is a incredible actor, I always say it to people when actors come up in conversation.
Blade Runner 2049 is such an amazing example of this, like you state. It was one of the only movies where I felt, intrinsically, the turmoil and emotions that K/Joe had going through him. Thanks for my Tommy Wiseau dose of the day
I agree with literally everything you said in this video!
Finally some love for this underrated actor!
Dude also has a knack for picking movies with awesome scripts and directors
Was waiting for you to mention Blue Valentine, because he was absolutely SPECTACULAR in it. He is one of the greatest in Hollywood, and isn’t getting the recognition he deserves imo. Hope he’ll continue making awesome movies in the future.
How long is mesmerizingly brilliant in the most perfectly understated way. Ugh. Love him.
Great essay!

True! I think Ryan brings this really cool relaxed element to the screen, which makes you feel that Ryan would be like that off camera too.
Ryan Gosling has a great understanding about what his purpose is in each character. That makes him a very intelligent and dynamic actor.
At the beginning of the video i thought you were joking, but you are totally right with Ryan, he is an excellent actor who knows how to move and no only cry or yell. Great video Karsten.
So happy you made this video, Ryan is one of the greatest today.
Honestly if you're watching a film and you're not at all thinking about the performance then you know the actor/actress is doing a great job.
I tell people Ryan Gosling is my favorite actor and people don't seem to understand how. He's simply incredible, there has never been a movie of his I didn't enjoy watching. He never mails in a performance and never goes over the top. Blue Valentine is my favorite movie of all time

dude im so glad i found someone who agrees with the fact that ryan gosling is simply AMAZING at what he does
Very well said. All great actors are those who’ve made me fall in love with the characters but not the actors themselves. The actor and the character are like totally different persons. What about ‘Half Nelson’? One of his underrated film of his with an amazing cast and script, director, list goes on.
Thank you, I scrolled down to see the role in which he broke through as a serious ADULT actor. So surprised it wasn't mentioned in the video?
FINALLY someone who sees his ability, truly a talented actor that does NOT get enough credit
Totally agree with what you said, the "science" or methodology of acting has roots in the embodiment of the actor wich becomes the character, body talks, when you are DOING wich is the same as acting , the cues are just props.
Karsten, you will go places my friend. I absolutely love how the background sound tracks are neatly mixed into the video. You deserve way more subs.
Loved this video, I also feel like Ryan Gosling is a person that has 100 different personalities and each personality is a new movie, since his acting is so consistently good.
Ryan will always be one of my favorite actors. His movements show off who he is and does, and doesn't need to say it to explain who he is.
This video is wonderful - are there more like this on UA-cam (where it breaks down the actor's technique)?
Great video! I feel that Ryan is underappreciated, or even underrated, as an actor (but not as a celebrity) because most people tend to think of him as a Taylor Lautner/Channing Tatum/whoever. It's nice to see people appreciating him more!
So calming such an amazing video
everytime i describe ryan goslings acting style, i will usually describe it as “physical” because he dosnt use his words very often but he is capable of being understood to the point where the character is believable and interesting.
Great analysis. R. Gosling is one of the best actors at that time.
personally, my favorite actors (who happen to be generally underrated) are both Ryan Gosling and Oscar Issac. Oscar Issac really shined in "Inside Llewelyn Davis" as he showed similar acting skills stated in your video. Great work! Loved it!
Thank You for this video I think despite being so well known Ryan is such underrated actor
Here after Barbie and this still holds so true. He BECAME ken and there’s nobody else that could have fit that role
speaking of which The Nice Guys is a very very underrated movie. It was incredible and everybody should watch it.
I keep saying that Ryan Gosling is my man crush lol! He is a fantastic actor that is able to display so much emotion with very little dialogue. He is one of my favorites as well and I loved La La Land, Drive, and of course Blade Runner 2049.
Great video and subscribed!
I’m so glad someone finally said this
Great video! I absolutely LOOOVE your channel!!!
Also, who else is SUPER excited about Ryan Gosling's upcoming "First Man" movie about Neil Armstrong!!! 😄✋😄
I'm suprised because when I thought he didn't look like Neil, but, hey... He actually kinda does.
And it's directed by Damien Chazelle, no less.
Anime Watcher I know!!! I can’t wait!!! 😄🎉😄
ryan gosling has such an ironic smile. Everytime he smiles, i just KNOW he is thinking something sarcastic lmao Don't know why i get that impression from him, but i like it
Love your videos my man
Yes finally someone agrees that Ryan is a great actor and does his rolls perfectly. Truly one of the greats.
warning: *spoilers*
(obviously)
SPOILERS FROM WHICH MOVIES!?
Totally agree- Drive, Blade Runner 2049, and LaLa Land. Some of the best movies in the past decade
This is so accurate. Nailed it.
It helps too that he also has an excellent agent.
How dare you didn't mention 'half nelson'
Most of the lines in Half Nelson are improv and it earned him an Oscar nomination. Amazing film, amazing acting.
And neither Blue Valentine. I was waiting for him to talk about half nelson and blue valentine and it just didn't happen.
This was created very well and I love how your worded all of it! It is so true, he is such An amazing actor, i love this video!
I've been arguing about how great Gosling is for years. What really cemented it was seeing Drive for the first time, especially after associating him as just the pretty face from The Notebook.
Now, at least three of my favorite movies of the past couple years all star Gosling
Thanks for making this!
David Tennant in the show 'des' is basically reality. He is fucking incredible.
Funny you mention this:
I'm doing a play and I'm using Ryan as my reference.
Thank you for doing this video.
love this - 99% agree, though he's nothing like his character in crazy stupid love apart from the fact that his character's key trait is being attractive/sexy which to the average person, they'd think of ryan that way also. I also want to add that he does this really well in half nelson as well.
Gosh so true Ryan Gosling is a chameleon in terms of acting why I really love him as an actor!!!
I think no one gave him the respect he deserved because he starred in "The Notebook" and those Rom Coms make people who hate them dismiss the acting strengths of the male actors in those films. It happened to Matthew McConaughey as well. Now, he is well-established. Great video!
I think one of his biggest strengths is that he’s particularly good at choosing roles, the roles that fit him the best,
This is great. I’d love to see an analysis of Jake Gyllenhaal
Place Beyond the Pines, Drive, Only God Forgives are my favorites
Ryan is my favorite actor like it’s weird because i didn’t like the notebook but I thought he was the best part about it then I remember watching drive and fell in love with his acting
I didn't know Ryan Gosling played in The Believer, I saw that film long ago before knowing of Ryan Gosling. Powerful film in my opinion.
these videos are great man
Please do a video on Jake Gyllenhaal. Ryan Gosling & Jake Gyllenhaal are legit one of the best underrated actors working today.
The Best actor
I love Ryan so much
Great video!
Completely became another person.
solid analysis... Gosling imo is a great example of 21st century meisner technique
Best example of this is Half Nelson in which most dialogue is improv. The writers/directors only gave them the setting and the premise, but the dialogue was mostly unscripted, he became the character. It won Gosling an Academy Award nomination.
Ryan Gosling is the Best Actor working today
I clicked this thinking you were going to teach Ryan Gosling how to act.
Fantastic video as usual
Wonderful. You’d think that video essays would become an over saturated thing, but I think it’s like any other kind of movie reviewing and commentary. There’s always room for more voices, so long as they have a new perspective.
No way there's a video on this subject! I've been saying for years that ryan gosling is more than just a handsome face who. Love every movie he's in.
Ryan is kind of actor who can be both subtle and flashy. Rarely any actors can be both. Dude has fucking range.
