+Jesse skinz: I know, in 1987-89, I worked in Credit and Collections with a Man I'll call Roger (not his real name), who had been doing "Stand-Up Comedy", but who could only get jobs as a Comic for a week here, a week there or three days in Miami and 3 days in Las Vegas. I found out that being a Comedian can be a serious business, when you need to pay the Rent or Mortgage and this Comedy Job you love to do is NEVER a Permanent one for any appreciable length of time. I bet "Roger" is not the only Comic who had to settle for any job, rather than the one he loved. For every Conan, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, there must be thousands or 100s of thousands of Comics who struggle to survive, because they have this crazy idea that they should devote their lives to making us laugh. Garry Shandling, RIP.
I feel so bad for Conan. He looks like he just had his heart ripped out. It's really hard seeing him so hurt. What a beautiful tribute to Garry Shandling, very moving.
Reason no 231 of why Conan is now the undisputed king of Late night comedy is that he wears his heart on his sleeve. He's such a real, wonderful and eloquent person in these situations. So much respect!
Again, Conan gives the most heartwarming and genuine eulogy. I watched his tribute to Robin Williams about 10-15 times to help with the sadness of his passing and I'm sure I'll return to this video several times. RIP Garry.
Conan is good at expressing himself. He uses words like an art. He forms sentences that gets you excited too how they're ending. Conan speaks form the heart, Conan speaks from experience. All these attributes are very rare in the business that Conan is in. I wish more people would see it like I do because then he would truly be appreciated in his time, and not later when everybody figures it out. Lets not do the same mistake as we have done with other great comedians and actors. Conan speaks form the heart, thats why Conan will always be in our hearts.
Conan is one of the classiest acts on television. Every time I see him pay respects to a comedy great, you can tell it's because he actually cared, not because the network thought it would get views.
That was very touching, Conan. What a wonderful way to honor your friend. I just wish so many of these legendary actors and musicians would stop dying this year.
Thanks to Conan for giving a great remembrance of Gary Shandling for Shandling's friends, family and fans. The story of Shandling's Hawaii visit with Conan and the Emmy skit assistance were moving. Watching Brad Pitt scowling at Conan while Mr. Pitt was next to his (now) ex Jennifer Aniston only added to the Shandling-ness of the clip. Mr. Shandling was unique, never dull, funny, generous and now will be missed.
Some great people have passed this week. Gary Shandling the comedian, Phife Dawg from tribe called quest, Johan Cruyff the Dutch great futball player. May they all Rest in Peace
I don't even know who he was but seeing how he made a difference in Conan's life actually made me tear. we may not be celebrities but knowing we can make a positive difference in somebody else's life as a good buddy is surely more important than being a famous comedian.
Watch It's Garry Shandling's show and The Larry Sanders Show. The first one was a sitcom loosely based on his life. He had a live audience & talked to the cameras to let you know what was happening. The Sanders Show is definitely his best. It was about the life of a late night talk show host on and off camera. Lots of celebrities played themselves on the show. They loved being in on the joke.
To be honest I never knew Gary but he seems like a very genuine and awesome person. I could also see it in your eyes Conan how painful it has to be for you..but you did an awesome job and you're such a genuinely awesome guy. Seriously Conan is great.
+Nocturnal Burst no it doesn't, but he could be indifferent about the situation and he is not, he is very kind and lovable man, don't be cinic dude, world doesn't need to any of that
+Hildeliza Martínez How do you know that he's not indifferent? And i'm assuming by kind and lovable you mean rich and famous right? I'm not a cynic* i'm a realist, and i highly doubt that my opinion on a YT comment section has any affect on the world, that's called narcissism.
+Nocturnal Burst My band performed on Conan about 5 years ago and although Conan was extremely busy with show preparations (he is very hands-on) he went out of his way to make us feel welcome and to ensure we were comfortable throughout the entire day. I was so impressed by his authenticity and kindness. He truly is a warm and genuine person.
I was 10 years old when the Garry Shandling show came on tv....it became my favorite show instantly. I loved Garry and I love Conan for always paying respect to the greats
We've lost some awfully big talents this year so far - David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Garry Shandling, Alan Rickman, Natalie Cole, Scott Weiland, George Kennedy and author Harper Lee among many other notable people. For me personally, losing David Bowie at the age of 69, two days after his birthday and the release of the brilliant Blackstar album was the hardest loss of all. Never have I felt such grief at the passing of anyone else in my 57 years of life. David was one of the biggest pillars of my life, my North Star, my guiding light, a mentor who taught me to be fearless and to just be myself without concern for what others thought of me. Losing Garry Shandling and Glenn Frey is also difficult because they still had so much to give, they were still so very vital, and frankly, anytime someone dies before the age of 70 or 75, their life was cut short as far as I'm concerned.
+Grimm Reaper Yes, good point. Forgot about him. He died at 72 (and his father passed away at 82.) Never did see FS, Jr. perform but did see his dad twice, in August of '91 and August of '92 (when FS was 75 & 1/2 and 76 & 1/2 respectively) both times at the Greek Theater in L.A. Hearing of FS's death was definitely a moment to remember. I saw a concert the following week at the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA and all three performers - Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan (yeah, you read that right) all made mention of or in some way acknowledged his death in their performances. I'm so lucky to have seen him before it was too late, though at the second concert, FS forgot the lyrics to three of his songs. THAT was depressing to witness.
As a television viewer I first saw Garry perform his stand up on the tonight show. Immediately I was laughing and laughing at every joke. The funny facial expressions, clever punch lines, amazing timing had me laughing till I cried. Garry clearly had the gift that was so unique to him. I was so upset and shocked to hear of Garry's passing. Felt so sick inside, felt so incredibly sad and yet I never personally knew him.. Conan was so sweet to have this tribute to his friend. Seeing that the clips brought Conan to tears made me cry too. Garry left a legacy of laughter to everyone, and we are all so blessed to have it all to remember him by. In this crazy world I thank Garry for making so many forget their problems by making them laugh. Thanks to Conan for the nice tribute.
so sad ;-( He was a legend , I loved his show back in the day. I actually served him room service for many years in Hawaii in the early 90s , such a nice guy. Oatmeal , OJ , wheat toast and 1/2 a papaya with lime , sometimes a pot of coffee.
Conan looks like he's gonna break down after that clip. Absolutely beautiful sir, I think Death is just coping with the loss of Mr.Pratchett (Pterry), lashing out in anger.
I just found this out a few hours ago, Garry Shandling was such a brilliant comedian , and I will miss him, what is with 2016? we are only 3 months in and another big star is gone.
+Mike Kingsbury We live in an era where so many wonderful, talented people are able to find an audience and make great things for everyone to enjoy. Sadly, the era has gone on so long that we're starting to see these people pass on. It's best to remember all the great things they've given us and let go.
Reminded me of a Robin William's joke. Asked by a reporter: "Why is it Germany is not known for comedy?" He said: "Because you killed all the funny people".
What a beautiful tribute. Conan, there's a saying, "When you're going through hell, walk fast." In other words, everything changes in time so don't give up. That goes for anyone who's going through a bad time. Nothing stays the same, happiness, sadness, etc. they're all transient. Sounds like Garry Shandling came at the right time. God bless him.
Dang. Very sad but I'm smiling at the same time. Since his passing, I've been watching a lot of videos of him. I hope Garry gets that boxing ref at his funeral like he wanted.
This clip is one of my favorite things in the whole world. It's all I know of garry shandling and it's beyond enough. They look genuinely happy and in love. It's perfect comedy.
Conan does it again with another awesome eulogy. I know he made me feel a lot better with the passing of Robin Williams, David Bowie and now Garry. I hope I'm lucky enough to have someone speak like that about me when I die.
I'm so saddened by his passing - but I find comfort in videos like these where we can remember his legacy. Garry was a comedy legend. Rest in peace and hail hydra.
Right on conan,we as an audience could tell that was from the heart, the part that really got to me was the story about Hawaii,I can only assume and I may very well be wrong but I cant help but to think that at the time your wife was probably annoyed that you were spending that whole week with Shandling cuz as most of us know when we as guys go somewhere and run into one of the fellas our logic and responsibilities go out the window and we turn into high school boys again and run wild but here is the beauty in that... Conan had no idea at that time that he would be making a decision that he would NEVER regret, that week spent with Shandling is now priceless to him and you can bet your bottom dollar he wouldnt trade that memory for anything, and I bet the wife feels bad she kinda nagged him,we still love you Mrs.Obrien but boys will be boys.Awesome tribute Conan and RIP Garry Shandling
I went on twitter and saw that Gary Shandling passed away the other day... my bro came home from work and called me to tell the sad news that I already knew, it was weird cause we both have watched him on TV for the last 20 years and in some some ways we are jokers and got jokes from him that we still use to this day. It certainly is a bad time for comedy to lose someone but he always made me and my bro laugh. and that was important and why I'll miss mr. shandling....
They say comedians are never true to the heart. Conan proves them wrong. Gary Shandling marathon tonight for me. Need me some classic comedy. R.I.P Gary. Legends never die.
This is why Conan is so loved and valued by fans, he ALWAYS send the best regards to his colleagues who have passed and sends the best appreciation to all who have helped him and likewise. You are sincerely the best Conan!
Can't believe he's gone,I've been a huge Gary Shandling fan for many yrs, never missed an episode of The Gary Shandling show among tons of other shows, cameos and stand-up, His comedy stayed with me from a kid to an adult. God bless you Mr Shandling.
RIP Garry. Love and miss you 😘❤️ Nice tribute to my favorite comedian. I remember watching the Larry Sanders and the Garry Shandling Show. He did a great job hosting the Tonight show as well. Hard to believe it was 2 years ago today that the world lost a wonderful talented guy.
Years later and I still tear up. Comedy just isn't the same after the greats pass away. Thank god he had so many friends who still honor his memory. I love hearing their Garry Shandling stories. Garry and Conan riding the horse on the beach and seeing them both cracking up is priceless brilliance.
A truly heartfelt tribute. and, sure, he only rightly teared up at the very last. Shandling was a very beloved comic genius and person. he should have been around for AT LEAST another ten years, ... but what can you say ?
The Larry Sanders Show and Late Night w/Conan were my two major TV staples in high school. I was addicted to both shows and still love watching old clips. I never knew what good friends these two were until I saw this last year. Such a sweet tribute.
Obviously I've never met Conan before so I don't know what he's really like, but every time I watch something of his he comes across as tremendously honest and intelligent. He has a certain sweetness about him that makes me feel like he's not just "doing his job" or trying to show off. I hope all that is true. I really do love his work.
sorry for you loss, Conan. I have fond memories of watching his show with my parents when I was younger, and he always stuck with me as a favorite comedian as I grew up.
One of my favorite Conan moments in history. I loved Gary Shandling too, so this was super special. I got into Gary a ton in the few years leading up to his death so this was really special to witness.
Garry Shandling was a great guy and funny as HELL. I remember the first time I met him at my old job at a movie theater, and I had just started meeting celebrities on the job and had been learning not to dote on them too much if I were a fan, but when he showed up one night with Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), I didn't have to worry about giving him too much attention lol. He walked up to the snack stand and said something like 'I don't see it, Marcia', and she smiled and asked what he was looking for, and then he turned to my coworker and I and said 'Got any pants?' I totally didn't expect it and I started laughing and said I don't think that's on the menu. Then he asked if we sell any belts, and I asked my coworker and she started laughing and said she didn't think so, and I said maybe next time he comes in, we can have it pre-ordered for him :D The next time he came to my job at the theater, it was for a special screening, and he was still really funny. When I was getting ready to leave work at the end of the night shift and the theater was already starting to close, he was still outside the theater, talking to other ppl on the sidewalk. He was so easygoing and down-to-Earth, and nice to everybody. He was social but in the best possible way. I'd heard recently that he had struggled with depression, so I guess he was working hard to overcome it, as you could never tell anything was bothering him. I guess Conan has a similar feeling about how deep and empathetic he is. We truly will miss Gary.
I'm reading the comments after watching this clip (after seeing Garry Shandling on Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee). You have a gift for telling stories.
Those 2 on the horse is the most genuine smile and laughter I've ever seen here... those 2 were probably cracking up about how ridiculous the situation they are in....
First stand up comedian I ever saw. My Dad forced me to sit through the whole set in 1987 when I was 8 at the AZ state fair. I didn't get it, but when I tuned in to Larry Sanders a few years later, I made up for it.
I have a whole new respect for Conan as a human being. A side you rarely see in comedians.
Conan really is a great person I give him that

yes he was speaking from the heart
100% agree!

This was beautifully written, you literally brought a tear to my eye, thank you
Well he is from Harvard
Conan rarely tears up so you know he genuinely loved the guy
No one does sincerity like Conan.
Gone too soon, Mr. Shandling.
A beautiful tribute from the heart ... RIP Gary Shandling.

+christian Watch his Larry Sanders show. from the beginning. It's a very smart show. And now, of course, we can binge.
Garry
Thank you Conan for throwing out the script and starting your show with this wonderful tribute and story that we never know. RIP Garry.
Conan is just so kind and nice
+peachesandpoets When you're on television, it doesn't pay to be unkind and unpleasant.
+Nocturnal Burst no it doesn't, but he could be indifferent about the situation and he is not, he is very kind and lovable man, don't be cinic dude, world doesn't need to any of that

So you like Conan. Why put down someone else? Is that a Russian thing, or what?

Deep, deep sadness. Expressed with class, poise & humor.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. he was extremely talented.
when Conan passes it'll definitely be a sad day
One of the worst
+julio martinez Don't even go there. He will forever if we just find enough virgins
+julio martinez oh man don't want to think about this
What would we even do, it's like a major part of life just. Gone.
That'll be the day Late Night ends forever, after Carson and Letterman, I think only Conan is the one from the Golden Age of Broadcasting.
I absolutely love this. What a kind, talented, and hilarious human being.
A lovely tribute to Mr. Shandling......

Beautiful tribute. So moving to hear such a personal memory. Thank you, Conan.
My tears are from laughter and from true sadness.
Laughter is a true gift. Thanks for giving us that joy
You are comedic high class, Conan. What thoughtful and caring words to honor your friend. Here's to Garry!
Well done Conan. Very tasteful.
Reminded me of a Robin William's joke.
Asked by a reporter: "Why is it Germany is not known for comedy?"

This was such sad news. But this is a great tribute. Well done.

Insanely sad. He was such a talent. Much respected by all. I loved his book and Dvds. Gary Shandling was beyond brilliant.
Excellent tribute! Gary was and will always be one of the all time greats for so many.
Garry Shandling will be truly miss R.I.P. That ending is hilarious, thank you Garry for all the great laughter you have given us.
Conan is awesome.I would have kept crying.Garry was truly one in a billion.
This story between Conan and Gary sounds like the sort of Comedy Drama movie I would most likely watch in a heartbeat.
What an awesome tribute... Thanks Conan .... RIP Gary ...
wow. i knew so little about Gary Shandling . what an amazing guy
Sad and Beautifull at the same time
I can't imagine a better tribute--reminding us how funny he was.
Classy, Mr. O'Brien
I loved Garry's humor from the moment I saw him on his first Tonight Show appearance with Johnny Carson. What a comedic genius he was.
You're all soul, Conan. What a wonderful tribute.
I love that. Garry was unforgettable and a humble soul. RIP Garry we will never forget you.
I wish that more of us had people like this to counsel us during important times in our lives. Its sad that most of us never will.
Then he asked if we sell any belts, and I asked my coworker and she started laughing and said she didn't think so, and I said maybe next time he comes in, we can have it pre-ordered for him :D
The next time he came to my job at the theater, it was for a special screening, and he was still really funny.
That was beautiful
Those 2 on the horse is the most genuine smile and laughter I've ever seen here... those 2 were probably cracking up about how ridiculous the situation they are in....
First stand up comedian I ever saw. My Dad forced me to sit through the whole set in 1987 when I was 8 at the AZ state fair. I didn't get it, but when I tuned in to Larry Sanders a few years later, I made up for it.
Oh that was awesome. I remember watching Gary as a kid...i loved that guy!!
Conan is the best friend one could ever have.
Such a wonderful tribute from Conan. Gary was certainly something special and obviously a good man.
THAT'S the most beautiful thank you to a human BEING just for the honor of being able to be in there LIFE! !! LOVE uuu
