Thanks for the clarification 🙏 Do you have source for this? I feel the pain she is going through, and being a nurse would explain. I just want to feel connected to the music. Some singers (or performers) are only “singing lyrics” they are not connected to and when the emotions are fake, then I can’t feel “connected”. I need the emotions to be raw, truth, real, etc. Thanks again 🙏
She is a nurse. She seems to have had many difficult experiences at work. Her very gentle and strong singing voice probably comes from her experiences. She is not well known in Japan yet, but she is a dynamic singer, so she may become popular overseas.🙏🙏🙏
Once in a while, you hear an artist that truly moves you with their performance. This performance of "Crow" by Upiko did that a few weeks ago. Princess NittPicc, I completely understand your reaction and relate to it. One words describes this, Wow!!!
Since I I saw this video (the one you're watching) the other day I've listened to it many times... At first, without even knowing the lyrics I loved her voice and singing, then I turned on the lyrics and it hit me in the face! Those lyrics, holy... It made me freaking cry. I just told a friend this song broke me.
Thank you for giving such a genuine reaction. Truly. I mean, I like watching reaction videos, but some of them tend to feel forced. This song, however, touches me so deeply I cry my eyes out each time, and I could really connect with you through your true feelings. Thanks for being awesome, even if it wasn't on your bingo list to cry xx
Upiko is fantastic. She is up there with Ado and LiSA for me as amazing singers with so much emotion in their voices. This song deserves a bunch of views! Loved that you connected to it, music is there to make us feel. Never be afraid of feeling from music! Great reaction!
When I put this up as a reaction suggestion back in April, I hoped you would eventually listen to it. She is such an amazing singer. From the first time that I heard this song and read the lyrics, the song really spoke to me looking back at the dark days of my life but thankfully I am in a good place now. I understand why anyone is moved by this song or any of her music. She closes her performances with this song regularly. I would also suggest listening to her most recent song Human Scramble. To answer your question, yes she does write her own music and has had to struggle for every ounce of success she has had. (Also, she streams live twice a week at 9am and there is an English version of crow as well, but I prefer the Japanese version personally)
I love her music! Here’s a song that I can relate to, in the past that is! Her voice is fantastic! She has an English version to this song!! Also her song Human Scramble will leave you in tears! Her lyrics would remind me on how Pau from The Warning would write! She has a livestream on her UA-cam channel that is on Tuesday and Friday!! Upiko is a remarkable artist!
You’ve reacted beautifully, with no filter. Her emotions and yours , I can feel them. Thank you for that 🙏 Really, really enjoyed it, and discovered a gem 💎
Love that people are exploring the same song I found out about like 3 months after it was released. It spoke to me in so many levels even though these hardships that the lyrics speak of are not mine to capture. It is blatantly such a powerful song. I often come back to listen to it.
Nakajima Miyuki had a huge vocal range and sang in many different styles so people looking her up might be confused by the comparison because some of her biggest hits were very different kinds of songs sung completely in a higher register. However, much of her folk stuff did sound very similar to this with the same kind of passion and deep lows. Yamasaki Hako, Asakawa Maki, Satoko Ishimine, Carmen Maki were some other similar artists that the Japanese music industry never pushed beyond their borders.
I am a 58-year-old male and not ashamed to say that this song makes me cry as well. Most of her videos on UA-cam are just her and her guitar. No backing music. I love this song "Rapid Train To Hell" (according to Google Translate). She shows more of her vocal range and dynamics. ua-cam.com/video/qBpUTVSLLDM/v-deo.html
The chord progressions and melodies in this are something that's quite characteristic of Japanese pop and contemporary music. The chord progressions exemplify something that American guitarist, Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth who's been living in Japan for quite a long time and become somewhat of a celebrity and music producer there) has said in interviews and clinics about Japanese pop music (you can find snippets of these on UA-cam). The chord progressions in Japanese pop and contemporary music are often quite elongated, with many variances and a lot more exotic and expressive chords, and contrasts between chords. A chorus might actually be a single chord progression rather than a short progression repeated several times, which is more typical in Western pop music. It's an interesting difference that's not always as prominent now, especially as Japanese music becomes more influenced by Western music genres. But it's definitely something I've felt as a long-term fan of Japanese music, and from having lived there for a long time in the past and absorbing it all. I feel like the music ITSELF written this way tells me a story, without the lyrics.
I'm a big fan of ``UPIKO'', so thank you for featuring her CROW and explaining it to me. At her live performance, she sings with 100 times more power than this MV, giving you goosebumps and tears. I think her songs are a necessary message in this day and age, and she will be performing live in Kassel, Germany on October 4th and 5th. CROW is great, but ``Lotus'' and ``Human Scramble'' are also great, so please give them a listen.
At the end of the song, they sing, "It's too early for you (the clumsy crow) and I to die." They are saying that they should start again. In other words, it is a song of encouragement for a fresh start.
Thank you for the review of her song. This song of hers pierced my heart. She was a nurse. One day. Someone told her. "You are young. Sing the songs you like." She became a street singer. And what is the power of her anger?
I've seen a couple of people reviewing this song, and they didn't review the lyrics as well as the music, so I'm glad you did a complete review. You miss so much with this song if you don't!
those capo are really handy for quick key changes mid-song. her vocal style is reminiscent of the famous Nakajima Miyuki; This busker / streamer / singer-songwriter also covers Nakajima's songs quite a bit. This song is a staple of her street busking sets as well as other similar ones like "FAITO" (try your best) by Nakajima Miyuki. other songs have reflected her struggles as a musician and the life and death she faces as a nurse. personally, I never would have compared remy's vocal style and upiko's style. so, that was surprising - something i probably never would have thought of.
Upiko have LIVE shows two days a week in her channel.. She stream, and video is deleted, so, you must see live and chat with her. She talk good english. She is humble, and sing stories of people.. her son "the human scramble".. made me cry every time. The first time i though she sings about herself.. Now that i know that it's not true .. i continue crying every time i listen. She will publish her fist LP in OCTOBER.
Wow, I haven't been that emotional since Ren and Hi Ren. Fantastic voice too. Worth checking out more. Edit: Just checked her out and htere's an English version of the song!
Hayao Miyazaki created a level of music that I could not ever imagine would ever be matched. Upiko, singlehandedly, proved me wrong. I have very high respect for both.

Dear NittPicc. You are a trained musician and may agree with this. Human voice is an amazing wonder. I have not experienced it with any musical instruments, but it can happen with human voice. It is a powerful thing. And not all singers can do it. This young lady can do it. She is a wonder.
She reminds me of that French old singer.... Oh what is her name.... She had several hits in Europe in the 60:ies..... We had Zarah Leander here in Sweden with a similar voice. She was big in the 40:ies and 50:ies.
She reminds me of "Mariko" the character in the remake of "Shogun". For another stunning voice try the band "Glim Spanky". The singer sounds a bit like Janice Joplin.
Hello Princess NittPicc! I can't imagine anyone finding you annoying, you are awesome! Please don't apologize for having emotions and being human. Please take very good care of yourself and have an amazing week.
Your reaction is justified. I heard the english version as a random ad on instagram, then felt like I really needed to hear the full version. Both the English and Japanese version should be technically the same but DAMN do they hit differently. - Check out the English version
New to me. What a voice! Upiko, huh? I'll have to make a note about her. Maybe because she sounds a little old school, like 80s Japanese movie themes or something, it immediately made me think of a fairly recent anime ED (end credits theme), "Akiba Maid War." It's much more ridiculous, like a yakuza movie but it's about maid cafes. Except they play it straight and it's violent and dark. It's very Japanese, in that I don't know who else on Earth could make the combination work (like "Girls und Panzer" is so quintessentially Japanese). I really enjoyed it. Why am I suddenly leaving an anime review? I don't know, but I wrote it, so for the algorithm I'll leave it here. :P That ED is amazing, though. Maybe not as amazing as Upiko here, but Rina Satou can sing, make no mistake!
For another beautiful Upiko song, check out ua-cam.com/video/0byDB5FvvRg/v-deo.htmlsi=it5IQMm9QCEuFvD9 It translates to Human Scramble. It's just her and her guitar and the video does have an auto translate that works well enough but the song is just stunning and entrancing regardless. Cheers!

Hey NittPicc. Pleased to see to reacting to the lovely Upiko and her signature song Crow. English language version over on her official channel. Upiko does live chats frequently here on UA-cam, so be sure to subscribe for all notifications. Just as Mindset from Gacharic Spin was one of, if not my favourite song of 2021, Crow has fast become one of my faves of the year so far, even if we're only at the midway point. One of those songs that will stop you in your tracks and have you reaching for the Kleenex. You needn't apologise for your reaction ✌️❤️

Thank you for featuring Upiko.
Her songs and singing voice are amazing.
Please continue to pay attention.
You did great work! I’m jealous that you got a chance to be in her presence! …and I promise I will. 😊
she is a nurse and constantly witnessing people's lives and deaths.
what she sings is love and requiem for the losers.
Thanks for the clarification 🙏

The way she lets herself scream at the end is just so real😢
Upiko herself is the author of the music and lyrics of this song.
I discovered her the other day and she is my favorite of all time after listening to her.
The eyes... Even if she is not looking straight at you, pierces the soul
Great emotional reaction. One of the strongest entries this year. Upiko is really an excellent singer-songwriter. And those lyrics... poetry.
She has done an English version too... just in case you wanted to cry again.
of all react videos I watched for this song, your reaction is the most justified I've seen.

Watch Upiko live on stage... Her voice was indeed powerful. I literally came to Comifuro just to watch her and Yuko Suzuhana.
Don't worry, this song touches our hearts and brings us to tears.

Great reaction and I totally understand your emotional response to this song, it's touching and heartfelt and so sad. Wonderful music.
Her voice reminds me another Japanese singer from the 80s - Nakajima Miyuki.
She reminds me of Hako Yamasaki from the 70s!
Her most famous song before Crow was a cover of Nakajima Miyuki - "ファイト". At time of writing it has 5.7 million views.
