  • Hello guys, I have designed and 3D Printed a variable nozzle EDF in this video. I have used my previous 70 mm Electric Ducted Fan in this video.
    I have used a Racerstar 2500 Kv brushless motor in it.

    This is cool. I do think this makes more sense for an EDF, fixed wing type aircraft. For a quad, using a quarter deflector, each corner on the inside towards the center. Variable pitch blades on the other hand, now that might be the final direction. The main difference between helicopter type and quad type, being that the quad would only need a "fixed" variance, meaning the pitch of the entire propeller, much like fixed wing types.

    The paddles you added reminded me of the thrust attinuators that were on the T37 I flew at UPT. They were on the T37 to reduce the thrust not increase it. They were required to allow higher power settings on landing due to the slow acceleration of the engine on the T37.

    Pretty cool! Looks like the nozzle fins need guides on them to help aid the formation of the converging outlet, that or have the fins slightly overlap each other so they don't bump into each other during closure. Subbed! 👍 Looking forward to the next one.

    So having two fans and a variable duct in-between the fans and the nozzle.

    I suggest adding a slight blank tubing section, short length, between the edf exhaust exit and the thrust vectoring mechanism. With maybe an angled spiral vane inside. Help clean up turbulence.

    Left a comment before but since it had a link it may have been blocked? I dunno. Anyway, the variation is on the wrong side. At the end of the day, what you have here is a ducted fan. It needs a more open intake to generate more vectored thrust. Extra points for making the duct aerodynamic when open to draw in more air and generate extra lift. When it closes it must also close to no more than the duct width or it'll constrain intake too much. Ultimately, the closed position is just to cruise and eliminate drag.
    The reason further constraining the thrust vector damages the performance is because you're creating resistance to flow. The duct must be straight and there is a VERY precise distance you need your blades from the edge. It's like no more gap than 2% of blade radius or something like that. If it's more than that VERY narrow gap the rotor tips will still create vortices where high and low pressure air cancel out.I'd leave a link but... Well...
    See, constraining the thrust vector in a true jet engine assists in managing thrust because after the compressor there's additional combustion creating additional force.
    Anyway, I love your work and the testing is great for additional data-points. Keep it up!

    Impressive work! I realize you're selling some STL files, but have you thought about making videos showing your design process? I'm not suggesting full tutorials, but I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in seeing some of the CAD work, like some tips and things you learned while 3D modeling, etc. Many 3D printing channels on UA-cam also show some CAD work as part of their videos. In my opinion a 3D printer is really quite limited if you don't know how to create your own designs, and I have no doubt your audience would enjoy it given your clear skills in this domain.

      I tell you what...if you check my previous videos...I have created three tutorials of really complex design ( you can check that too ) and those videos were having few views so i thought people were not interested in watching it....so I have skipped that part...
      But now i am sure to add a little clips so people can enjoy it.
      Btw the updated version of this EDF will be updated within a week...

    There is a thrust and speed dynamic going on there."The higher the airspeed, the more mass flow through the engine, but the smaller the difference between the exit and entrance velocities. Hence increasing the speed of an aircraft can make the thrust increase or decrease. Usually there is an initial increase in thrust, followed by a decrease with increasing speed."

    The large variety of pressures/temperatures in a jet engine make variable convergent nozzle nevessary. The pressure changes for an EDF are negligible in comparision, so finding one optimum nozzle ratio should be the goal. On either side of this optimum, you're either just going to balance out efficiency with increasing reaction force against ine nozzle vanes if too small, or lose pressure quickly if too big.

    • @MechNinja
      @MechNinja  10 місяців тому

      Well I also thought that combustion must be necessary for Converging nozzle but I need to test it practically....

    If you want an easier way to restrict airflow without disrupting it, you can make something that I 'll try to describe.
    On the back of the BLDC motor you continue with a solid cylinder with the same diameter as the motor and after some length of steady diameter, it ends up in a relatively long cone.
    Outside the fan case, you continue to the back with cylinder with diameter a little more than the fan case, so that it can slide forward, making the duct longer and when it reaches the point where the internal cylinder turns to a cone, it starts to shrink in diameter keeping the cross section of the duct constant.
    When you need to reduce the output cross section, you simply move the outer cylinder forward.
    Crude schematic (the end cones should be much longer and smooth):

    This is a cool project, but it seems a bit weird to me for a ducted fan. How do you calculate your efficiencies? This is not a jet engine, a nozzle should only decrease thrust and propulsion efficiency. A fan engine produces thrust by increasing the momentum in the incoming air p = m * v. The propulsion efficiency is eta _p = 2 / (1 + (v_exit / v_inlet) . So you want the maximum mass flow with the smallest change in velocity to get the highest efficiency. Nozzles come into play when you use combustion. In simple terms, you create pressure, that you convert to velocity in the nozzle.

    • @MechNinja
      @MechNinja  10 місяців тому

      Thank you for your suggestion. I also thought that the combustion is necessary for the variable nozzle because of Bernoulli's principle. But since I only had theoretical data so i want to check it practically. I want to check all the possibilities before coming to a conclusion, as my future projects are detailed and complex.
      And regarding the efficiency, i calculate it as the ratio of thrust to power and generally every manufacturer takes it. And to Calculate the propulsion efficiency, I need much more data. In my upcoming projects I will be more detailed in terms of efficiency.
      The updated version of this EDF will be uploaded within a week.

      @@MechNinja I actually studied aerospace engineering with a focus on aircraft propulsion and space propulsion, so I'd you have any questions, please feel free to ask :). For the testing I noticed power levels fluctuating quite strongly, especially with the converging nozzle. That might throw off your measurements and calculations. What is your future project of I may ask?

    • @MechNinja
      @MechNinja  10 місяців тому

      And i studied mechanical engineering...and this is one of the fields I am interested in. Actually I work in robotics stuff too. For power fluctuations, I will try to use a more powerful source that will reduce the voltage drop and increase the accuracy. As per now..I only want you to give your knowledgeable views ( like the one you gave this time ) on my upcoming projects so that I can improve my work...
      And my future project is to make an efficient EDF....not powerful but efficient as I need much time of flight....
