- I`ve had many requests for this song over the last few years, so finally, here it is.
Dedicated to all those who have asked for it.
I created quite a few different preset sounds for this song, going from my trying to faithfully match the original organ sound used by Jerry Dammers in the first verse, all the way to a lovely overdriven Hammond sound used in their latest live shows. I change the sounds for each verse & chorus by using a foot pedal, (something else to distract me from my playing!).
I especially beefed up the organ sound for the fantastic organ solo, as I really wanted it to stand out from the record.
Leslie sim used on Hammond SK2 & Organdrive tube amp used.

This sounds magnificent. One of the best Specials songs. It should've been a hit rather than a B side. I could listen to your keyboard playing all day. I have only just realised I have listened to your stuff before, years ago, I recognised your name. I remember you doing a fantastic version of Liquidator. Keep up the good work mate.

Hi Lee, nice work on the actual sound of the organ, it sounds nearly perfect, and the solo is spot on too.
Ever tried playing anything by The Selecter before? I reckon that the organ solo on the track "On My Radio" would sound great on either the Vox Continental or your Hammond Organ.
Also, ever tried paying "The Young And The Old" on your Hammond? - I just thought, seeming that the Vox transistor-based combo organ and a modern-day Hammond organ would sound very different, especially with the Leslie speaker.
Anyway, keep up the good work mate. Hope to see more content soon.

For this one I wanted to get the same organ sound as used on the record for verses 1 & 3, but then I added a few sounds I liked for the other verses & choruses , especially on the organ solo.
Jerry used a very typical "jazz" Hammond setting for that organ solo, whereas I wanted a really powerful & gritty overdriven Hammond, with the fast Leslie sound, for it.
The Selecter?, yeah when I was in "The Tones Tones" we used to do "On My Radio" & "Too Much Pressure".
There is a video i`ve got of us playing "On My Radio" at the Dublin Castle a few years ago. I`ll upload it if you like.
I love the Hammond work on that song. I got the same sound out of my Hammond as he uses on the record, & I got the solo worked out correctly too (otherwise I wouldn`t have done it). People told me it sounded absolutely spot on, just like the record.
As for "The Young And The Old" I did do that on my Hammond & Leslie on my full Madness gig play along video, here, ua-cam.com/video/VEIh_sDUKMc/v-deo.html at the 22.37 minute mark.
You are definitely correct about the Hammond & Vox sounding different, especially as i`m sure Barzo used a Hammond on the recording of "The Young And The Old" back in the day. No way was it a Vox Continental.
I will do a proper cover of "The Young And The Old" with my Hammond & Leslie when I can.
I would like to upload more frequently, but it`s just that it takes a lot of time & effort to set everything up for making a video, especially getting the Leslie out & miking it up, on top of the time it takes me to work a song out correctly & practice it.
I only have a tiny space to work in, so uploads can`t be that frequent i`m afraid.
