One little mistake there Chris, the song is played entirely on the ride. Also, the drummers name is Alan White.
Interesting! It's so hard to tell in the audio with those damn hot rods. You could play the kitchen table and it would sound the same. Nice catch.
Behind the Beat with Chris Langan fair point Chris. To be fair you’ve done on great job on the video, any criticism is meant constructively. Keep up the good work bud!
Rob Taylor Thanks so much man! I didn’t take it badly at all! It was a great observation that I didn’t notice. I thought for sure it was the ride on the choruses, but never could really tell if it was the verses as well! I’ve seen so many bands slaughter this song, so any info on helping people play it right is welcome! Hopefully people take the time to read through the comments so they know to keep it on the ride! Cheers brother!
I wanted to say that too haha
.....is no one going to talk about the 2/4 bar before the fill??
Agree.
What about this bar? Can you point it out?
In this particular Chorus there are 8 bars. In the 8th bar there's a break on 3. The 4 is empty.
THEN a 2/4 bar is put in (empty as well) and THEN Chris' FillIn-bar starts. #Tryintoexplainmusicasagerman:D
awesome, Thanks Chris
Not a problem bud! Hope it was helpful!
You're a great teacher!! My five children are in a band and covering this song and are having such a hard time with the fill. My 12 year old is the drummer and needed help correcting it. Alright, so we'll work on it. Thanks for clearing it up. Cheers!
Yané Marie Sleppy thank you for the wonderful compliment! I’m glad this has helped. If you and the kids have not yet subscribed to the channel, I hope you would consider it! 😁 That Fill is tricky. Honestly I don’t think they planned it that way. I think it was a mistake that just happened and worked! It takes a little getting used to but I’m sure they will feel accomplished once they nail it! If all else fails, just make up your own fill. Nobody is really gonna know the difference. 😉 Best of luck!
best description. thx
No Problem! Thanks for watching!
Also watch very closely on the 'There and then' DVD to see how Alan plays this song on the ride cymbal. He seems to add in a session of quicker hits on the ride at the end of each bar
Interseting! Will have to check that out!
Cool, I would love to hear your thoughts on it! Also check the music video cos it would be good to see it played the same way like this!
I don't think playing this song with sticks is a mistake cos Alan always used sticks for this song live, so I guess it's a case of personal choice
Totally agree! Whatever you feel comfortable playing, and whatever best suits the song!
Not familiar with that song but very interesting lesson and a great catch about the no drum sticks angle, I missed that as well.
You are an awesome empowerer. Cheers Mate!
Why thanks so much dude!
Maybe you should do a video on how to play the drum part for Alanis Morissette's 'Ironic". "Isn't it ironic, don't you think?"...when you put identify as an expert who's played in bands for over 20 years, and then make a video about the the mistakes that make you "cringe" and staying as "true as possible" to the original, only for that video to contain some fundamental errors. The ride cymbal throughout the song is debatable - it's hard to tell from the original recording but most live versions I've seen show the ride being played throughout. I think it's certainly allowable to play the hats during the verse for dynamics, especially since Oasis playing a stadium is a lot different to a cover band playing a pub gig. The use of rods is pretty clear on the original recording however I've not seen any footage of Oasis' drummer using rods live, so again it comes down to what's best for the setting. The most challenging drum part of the song is the timing of the fill before verse 3 and you can't simply ignore the 2/4 bar leading into that. You've said the entire song is in 4/4, which is just incorrect. Got no beef with your other point - the diddles are important and give the song it's correct feel.
Awesome!!! Can you do more videos like this in the future?
Absolutely! Thanks for subscribing and watching! Do you have any suggestions for songs that are commonly played wrong that I could look into? Or any suggestions for videos! I’d be happy to cover any topic you might find valuable!
I guess my suggestion I see a lot of bands mess up Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" a lot due to the shifting time signatures in it.
Tate Davis Nice! That’s a good one! Let me see what I can do with it!
#4: Using a closed high hat instead of a ride
only joking aha, some good tips there
Without a doubt dude! Lol! What a dumb dumb I am!
Thanks for sharing this.
Absolutely my man! I wanted to help out some drummers that have been playing this wrong. I will say that I did make one error in this...The entire song is actually played on the ride cymbal. So keep that in mind as well...Happy Playing!
I have the wooden variety as they just sound better. That double tap is his trademark as listen to Don't look back in anger. If he played them quieter they would be nice little ghost notes but plays them too loud imo. His fills should be counted and very easy to count as his fills are very traditional. Think Ringo Starr. I think he is good for beginners as his style suits the basic drum books. I was learning another fill recently which I couldn't work out until I realised he was not coming in on the 1 and then it becomes natural. It was guy from Royal Blood Ben. I was taught by a jazz drummer even though he taught but always taught me even in breaks use the hi hat to count as will help with the fills and in this song that would definitely work. Too many drummers think the hi-hat is just to strike.
it would be nice for you to give a lesson on how to learn to diddle and how to count to start on the and of 1
Chris! Will you do a video on G.O.A.T. By Polyphia for me? Miss jamming man! Come out to Pittsburgh sometime!
It’s also played on the ride cymbal not high hats
Okay, I think we got the Hihat that actually (quite obviously) is a ride covered. BUT more importantly this Song is certainly not in 4/4 all the way through.
The Cymbal Hit you think as beat 1 is actually supposed to be on the last sixteenth note before Beat 3, so 2 e and A. You however played it on beat 3 in your Demo, making the rest four counts long, when it actually is all 4/4 then one 2/4 bar of silence and then the fill starting on beat 1 AND.
This video is like a never-ending curse. Lol. Yes, it's the ride...Not sure what I was thinking there. But.....The bar of 2/4 occurs in the measure BEFORE the last cymbal hit Think of it like this..."You're gonna be the one that 1, 2, 3, 4, - 1,You're my Wonderwall - 1, 2, 3, 4 - 1, 2, Crash, 2, 3, 4, - 1(+Fill)
Hope that makes sense. The bar of 2/4 occurs in the measure before that crash. That crash indeed happens on beat 1 and lasts four beats. Fill starts on the + of beat 1.
The song is not in 4/4 all the way through. Measure 30 is 2/4.
Great video! There's one more, though: not performing the fills during the last bit of the song, before the outro, while the chorus is being repeated. Take a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/silOU_BvPWc/v-deo.html -- it's a super cool breakdown of the song as a whole, but towards the end, he specifically mentions the drum part I'm talking about (and he has the drum track on its own, so it's easy to identify the fills).
Ohhhh......🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Nice video but you did a mistake too. Alan White don't use hit hat on this song but only ride cymbal.
Hey! Thank you. Yeah I know. I don’t know why I played the HiHat. I was so focused on everything else I just went to my natural playing position. Lol.
"This song is in 4/4 all the way through". Sorry but that's not correct. At 1:47 in the song, there is very clearly a 2/4 bar right before the long cymbal note (I suppose you could tack it on to the previous bar and call it 6/4 if you wanted). That's partly why the fill sounds a little off kilter because there is a time change going on before it. And of course the whole song is played on the ride. Apart from those things great video though!
Robin Johnson you’re right! The measure right before that Cymbal note is in 2/4. I realized I said that after the fact. What I think I meant to say was that the “fill is in 4/4”. And yes the song is played n the ride. I was so hell bent on explaining the three mistakes that I didn’t even think to play it on the ride. Thanks for the comment dude!
Okay but Oasis just used sticks live so yea
Play on the ride, and stop flapping your arms about, you look like you’re Tony mcCarroll
Yes the Song is played on the ride.....Flapping my arms about? Not so much.
@@tomreay-bennett1804 lol...UA-cam trolls I tell ya.
I cant help but cringe because the whole song is played on the ride
you talk way too much
It's called teaching.
