What I know about this song's meaning is, Yes, " Lit" (in English) has the same pronunciation of "Lotus flower" in Chinese. The story told by LAY is a representation of the story of Xiang Yu, a Chinese rebel leader that overthrew the Qin Dynasty. One of the generals who helped in the war, Liu Bang, was given control of Western China but quickly overthrew the other generals and broke the truce between himself and Xiang Yu. Whilst under attack, Xiang Yu was cornered and chose to take his own life rather than allow others to kill him. LAY has mentioned his interest in Xiang Yu and how he admires his determination to die on the battlefield fighting. He compares this resolve to the purity of the lotus: strong and unwavering. In Lit, LAY plays the role of Xiang Yu. It’s also really interesting that another song in this album, titled Jade, is a song also connected to Xiang Yu. Except it tells the story of consort Yu, the concubine of Xiang Yu. While Xiang Yu was besieged by Liu Bang, he sang a mournful song to consort Yu, who replied with her own verses, performing a sword dance which ended with her committing suicide so as not to distract him by his love for her. This song was 1.4 million dollars for the mv lol. I think the visual aspects live up to the price. Exos history is a tough one. I'll try my best to explain even though o doubt you'll see this. Exo started off as 12 members with six members promoting simultaneously in two subunits (Chinese (exo-m) and Korean (exo-k)). They promoted the same songs. It in different languages. Soon after their debut, the two subunits joined together. Unfortunately sm mistreated the Chinese artists so three of them filed lawsuits and left. After that, the remaining members of exo-m joined with exok and became just exo. The members at this point are xiumin, suho, lay, baekhyun, Chen, chanyeol, d.o., kai, and sehun. Lay was the only Chinese member left in exo. Currently however, lay is unable to actively promote with exo due to "political reasons" and tensions between china and s. korea. He's still a part of exo though. The last comeback that he fully participated in for the full album (title and bsides) was monster era I believe. Technically he was a part of the tempo promotions, but only in the sense that he appeared visually in the Korean mv. Lay had lines in the Chinese version of tempo. Since Lay hasn't been promoting with exo, he's started his own solo activities. He's been really successful and he has a really large following in China. Exols are still hoping that tensions between china and s. Korea will resolve and that lay will be able to promote with exo again soon. As for the song. I really like it. I have a similar saying in my country that says, "a lotus flower in cow dung" which basically means that someone who who acts differently than where they're from, acting all innocent and different when they come from a shitty background. The mv is based on the story of his favourite general xiang yu. The opera song you hear first few seconds is called “song of gaixia”. During the battle of gaixia the han soldiers( xiang yu army) was surrounded by the chu soldiers (enemy). The chu soldiers played victory songs to trick the han soldiers into thinking that they have lost the battle and they did , thus resulting in them running away. Xiang yu was only left with some soldiers his consort (yu) and his horse. The “song of gaixia” was composed by xiang yu for his consort when he was entrapped by the chu army. His consort later killed herself so she doesn’t get captured. Xiang yu escaped with the soldiers but chu army went after him later on he was the only one left and he killed himself so that the enemy doesn’t get the satisfaction to do so. The flower in the mv is a lotus flower, lay’s antis call him a white lotus which can someone pretending to be innocent or a victim. The man in Chinese opera customs is xiangyu. Xiangyu was a hero in the history of China. He helped the people to combat the tyranny in Qin dynasty. However, he failed to hold his lands for a long time, and be defeated by liu bang. Yes, " Lit" (in English) has the same pronunciation of "Lotus flower" in Chinese. The thing is, haters call Lay as "White Lotus", which means a person who pretends to be innocent or victim, looks pure but it's not. And in this case, the Lotus flower is Lay.
One meaning that I know that showed in the video is, you see Lay and the Lotus flower in the black water but they're still clean and white, that means Lay is ACTUALLY innocent.

This is definitely all spot on! But there’s also another layer to this MV that not as many people catch onto, which is just because of lack of knowledge of ancient Chinese history. The story told by LAY is a representation of the story of Xiang Yu, a Chinese rebel leader that overthrew the Qin Dynasty. One of the generals who helped in the war, Liu Bang, was given control of Western China but quickly overthrew the other generals and broke the truce between himself and Xiang Yu. Whilst under attack, Xiang Yu was cornered and chose to take his own life rather than allow others to kill him. LAY has mentioned his interest in Xiang Yu and how he admires his determination to die on the battlefield fighting. He compares this resolve to the purity of the lotus: strong and unwavering. In Lit, LAY plays the role of Xiang Yu. It’s also really interesting that another song in this album, titled Jade, is a song also connected to Xiang Yu. Except it tells the story of consort Yu, the concubine of Xiang Yu. While Xiang Yu was besieged by Liu Bang, he sang a mournful song to consort Yu, who replied with her own verses, performing a sword dance which ended with her committing suicide so as not to distract him by his love for her. The Chinese word for jade is yù, so the song is a play on words, just like how Lit is comparable to lian, the word for lotus. LAY’s songs are dripping with Chinese history and culture, something I find very personally interesting and hope you do too!

Exos history is a tough one. I'll try my best to explain even though o doubt you'll see this. Exo started off as 12 members with six members promoting simultaneously in two subunits (Chinese (exo-m) and Korean (exo-k)). They promoted the same songs. It in different languages. Soon after their debut, the two subunits joined together. Unfortunately sm mistreated the Chinese artists so three of them filed lawsuits and left. After that, the remaining members of exo-m joined with exok and became just exo. The members at this point are xiumin, suho, lay, baekhyun, Chen, chanyeol, d.o., kai, and sehun. Lay was the only Chinese member left in exo. Currently however, lay is unable to actively promote with exo due to "political reasons" and tensions between china and s. korea. He's still a part of exo though. The last comeback that he fully participated in for the full album (title and bsides) was monster era I believe. Technically he was a part of the tempo promotions, but only in the sense that he appeared visually in the Korean mv. Lay had lines in the Chinese version of tempo. Since Lay hasn't been promoting with exo, he's started his own solo activities. He's been really successful and he has a really large following in China. Exols are still hoping that tensions between china and s. Korea will resolve and that lay will be able to promote with exo again soon.
As for the song. I really like it. I can't really listen to it too often though because I feel really hyped up and energized when I listen to this. This song is on my playlist that I use for when I go on walks. The song is so powerful and it's a nice switch up from his previous release (which was also really good but had a completely different vibe)

I have a similar saying in my country that says, "a lotus flower in cow dung" which basically means that someone who who acts differently than where they're from, acting all innocent and different when they come from a shitty background. The mv is based on the story of his favourite general xiang yu. The opera song you hear first few seconds is called “song of gaixia”. During the battle of gaixia the han soldiers( xiang yu army) was surrounded by the chu soldiers (enemy). The chu soldiers played victory songs to trick the han soldiers into thinking that they have lost the battle and they did , thus resulting in them running away. Xiang yu was only left with some soldiers his consort (yu) and his horse. The “song of gaixia” was composed by xiang yu for his consort when he was entrapped by the chu army. His consort later killed herself so she doesn’t get captured. Xiang yu escaped with the soldiers but chu army went after him later on he was the only one left and he killed himself so that the enemy doesn’t get the satisfaction to do so. The flower in the mv is a lotus flower, lay’s antis call him a white lotus which can someone pretending to be innocent or a victim. He used this in a good way that yes he his a lotus that grows in the mud. The dragon as lay says that he always feels that there is a dragon guiding him in life also dragons are a symbol of power . The man in Chinese opera customs is xiangyu.
Xiangyu was a hero in the history of China. He helped the people to combat the tyranny in Qin dynasty. However, he failed to hold his lands for a long time, and be defeated by liu bang. When Xiangyu was besieged by the enemy, he decided to commit suicide by slitting his throat with his sword in case being humiliated by his enemy.
Even though Xiangyu’s soldier had prepared a boat for his escape, he still chose to die heroically not survive dishonorably. Xiang yu actively demonstrated the tragic heroism.
