It's a stupid quote that reflects and inflames the fears of non-scientists who don't understand how working scientists have to get past ethics committees and risk assessments and do all sorts of thinking about "should" and not just "could". At the end of the day, though, it's actually not up to scientists to arbitrarily hobble their research, it's supposed to be people, working through their elected officials, who decide on what to do with the fruits of that research. If you elect officials who decide to drop an atomic bomb, that's on YOU, not the scientists who made it possible. If you accept a system that allows your elected officials to keep secrets from you and act without your input, that's also on you.

I am indeed interested in this de-extinction topic. This video is really good at addressing the issues behind this topic. But that intro to Brilliant..... that's really totally another level man...
I think it's important to also consider the microbiome of the extinct species. There are many bacteria/protozoa/fungi etc that would have lived on and inside the the species and would have been crucial to their survival. Would you do an episode about a species microbiome and it's role in the health of that species? It would also be cool to know if there are any current studies focused on recreating the microbiomes of extinct species.

This sounds like a weird justification for conducting some genetic experiment. Scientist: "Hey, i want to create a mammoth, can you make up some reason so that i can get funding" Intern: Ah... climate change Scientist: Perfect
Just Raphael this post reads “I hate science, I believe what my political overlords tell me and that is to ignore science and keep burning that awesome fuel that funds those political overlords that I listen and believe as fact”
Both of these comments suck. The first is a typical example of how science is so often missrepresented (but it is a joke so it could be worse) and the second is putting words into the mouth of the first commenter. You can both do better.
@@davesulphate4497 Sorry, but i don't think that bringing back a prehistoric animal which went extinct even before human induced climate change occured and can have massive unintended consequences is a practical way to reduce global warming. @@justraphael6653 That is a legitimate stance to take on the matter, of course, but you did (as I stated before) missrepresent how science opperates (as a joke). I love when people try to say Jurassic Park was "anti-science" ... It was anti-capitalist.. They went through great lengths to tell the viewers that most of the science community was unaware of this research. (Even paleontologists had no idea they were doing this) Which means it was a completely private project by a Capitalist for profit; that's why they "never stopped to ask if they should" when they were only focused on if they could, because that's what they were paid by a Capitalist to do.
I LOVE the mix of knowledge and humour in your channel!! I had a teacher in school who would give extra credits for any essay that contained these traits !!!
Nice, we only got extra credit for no spelling errors, and this was way before personal computers/Iphones and spell check,...... which now sometimes "corrects" my spelling and messes up the context!!
@jay Expensive is just one kind of risky... What if the new re-created species develop behaviors that weren't anticipated and fuck up the already existing *delicate* ecosystem? We know very little about how genetics even function. Mainstream science still considers 97% of DNA to be 'junk!' Many trials and failures need to happen before a real world test is created. If you want to avoid all the possible risks, of which I name only one, then the projects are all the more expensive and time consuming. Either way, they do need to happen. Can't stop humans from humaning can't stop science from scienceing.

I rarely sub, but when i do... its decent channels...
I like your style, so here is a new sub
I had a pigeon breeder living next door to me when I was growing up and you have no idea how right you are about shooting up in the air.
Thing is, you don't actually have to hit any pigeons to have a bunch of them drop dead on the floor after doing that.
It's rather easy to literally scare them to death with a gun blast.
Nice shirt - where can I get one

If its entirely our fault an animal goes extinct today, and we have the technology to correct our actions, is it not our responsibility as stewards of this planet to bring that animal back? I think it's our obligation to keep the wildlife we share this wonderful planet with safe from us. Great video Joe.
Being Spielberg and making youtube videos, thats basically the same thing. 😂✌
Hello darkness my old friend, ROFL 😂
😂😂😂
Scale?
"These guys clearly need a hobby" could not have said it more, thanks !!!!!!!
Bringing back extinct species seems just a little problematic but as long as we're screwing up the rest of the planet, we may as well give it a shot :) Brilliant video (segue apprentice), as always.
having a horrible morning, but at least i have a new joe upload to watch. Thanks for brightening my day at least a little
edit: LOL Joe the first time i went to Texas (as a kid) all i wanted to do was go to the space center in Houston. We might be a little nerdy!
But what if extinction *dramatic pause* didn't have to be ..... forever
*whooshing sound of portal opening*
Joe what you do is as important as any film maker ,perhaps more you impart knowledge. To me that makes you a hero so thanks.
"Humans own the earth"
Bacterias: am I a joke to you?
Virus: I was here first nerd
Exactly! Humans are not the first species to drastically change the environment. Ask cyanobacteria.
@Potting Soil no, a virus was not here first. A virus needs a host. It is rather unlikely that a virus evolved first and then waited, possibly millions of years, for the right kind of host to turn up.
COVID-19 has entered the chat
Bacteria is already a plural word. Bacterium is the singular, so bacterias is redundant. You should have said, "Bacteria: Are we a joke to you?"
The jingle before your video starts has become the highlight of my day...please never change it 🤣
Why did you show an image of a "terror bird" as an animal that'd be cool to bring back? It litterally has TERROR in the name!?
Sorry to necro this but I think that might actually be a Moa!
Yep. I thought it was a moa too...
4:34 One of my favorite quotes from "Jurassic Park!"
Piñata Oblongata I hate that quote
@@PinataOblongata Dude...it's just a movie. CHILL
@@jimbyrdiii1503 So what? Movies are reflections of culture and they also affect culture. You don't think a million people saw that movie and nodded their head solemnly like he just made a "deep" point? Are you fond of people who mistrust science right now? I'm not angry, I'm just pointing this out for food for thought because not many people do, they just run with it without thinking.
@@PinataOblongata magic word here: Elected! That's a bit of the West, mainly. Communists? Who knows?
Humans: Let's bring back the dinosaurs.

0:31 You did the right thing. I'm a native Angeleno and I've gone to the tar pits multiple times. By contrast I've never gone to a TV show taping...and I once worked for Warner Bros. Plus, Miracle Mile (the part of town the tar pits are in) is a great part of town, especially if you are into TV/movies because a lot of filming has taken place there.
The Sound of Silence dying inside slow burn never gets old
Joyously lost it, dissolving in laughter at the Segue Master bit. At 66, I am soooo delighted to lose it in an old fashioned guffaw!
Sincerely... thanks Joe.
I worked in Hollyweird in my youth and I think your work product is superb. You may create narratives some day as a consequence of your experience. Obviously you’re a prolific creator. Thanks for your vids.
Genetics is a fascinating subject that's always encouraged me to look deeper into what is possible, mainly because I have genetic health problems myself.
You are the Spliberg of UA-cam man 👍
'These guys...clearly need a hobby...' made my day :D
Yeah that was a good one, hehe.
The La Brea tar pits are amazing and should not be missed. I go there everytime I go to LA.
Yup, one of he few reasons to go there now; as a former "Angeleno" I recall many good places to go and enjoy sights and scenery, even if it was a bit smoggy then!! ;D
Almost 500k subs, keep it up, I’ve been subbed for a while and I’m always happy to watch a Joe Scot video.
But how would you react if you found out Spielberg watches your videos? You never know man! :)
I am indeed interested in this de-extinction topic. This video is really good at addressing the issues behind this topic.
But that intro to Brilliant..... that's really totally another level man...
"All my life I have longed to do something meaningful."
"So... what happened?"
😁😁😁
Locomotion2121 So ask we all Loco. 🤨🥺😎
Turns out there is no meaning. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We use this planet like we have somewhere else to go. 😕
Who is we?
corroded medulla oblongata ...humans.
We better have some where else to go because the Sun, it is a star.. you know.. that will EXPLODE one day for sure.. so yeah we will be an multi planet species or we will cease to be as well as every other life form on Earth. Humans are the ONLY SPECIES that SAVES OTHER SPECIES SIMPLY FOR THE SAKE OF THEM LIVING> WE ARE AWESOME YA JACKASS! You do know that we are heading to Mars and will soon have a station on the moon right? Wake the fuck up, we ARE MULTI PLANET already. You know that lil thing called Voyager? yeah those two beauties are still flying through space mapping even more for us. Seriously you can not be that stupid.
J S who are you responding to? I think you missed the mark.
So sadly true
Joe, you are getting so good at your craft. Congrats and thanks for your contribution.
Science communicator is a much better job-description for what you're doing than 'youtuber'!
I totally agree.
Yeah, the latter sounds like a guy floating down the river,.. or some starchy root you dig up to eat!!;D
Mammoth farts have a whole new meaning now. And for climate change too.
This sounds like a weird justification for conducting some genetic experiment.
Scientist: "Hey, i want to create a mammoth, can you make up some reason so that i can get funding"
Intern: Ah... climate change
Scientist: Perfect
Just Raphael this post reads
“I hate science, I believe what my political overlords tell me and that is to ignore science and keep burning that awesome fuel that funds those political overlords that I listen and believe as fact”
Both of these comments suck. The first is a typical example of how science is so often missrepresented (but it is a joke so it could be worse) and the second is putting words into the mouth of the first commenter. You can both do better.
@@Jushiro259 Bro, I am not from USA.
@@davesulphate4497 Sorry, but i don't think that bringing back a prehistoric animal which went extinct even before human induced climate change occured and can have massive unintended consequences is a practical way to reduce global warming. I read about it months ago and even actual scientists were saying the same thing.
@@justraphael6653 That is a legitimate stance to take on the matter, of course, but you did (as I stated before) missrepresent how science opperates (as a joke). But to use data to arrive at a predetermined conclusion is a serious breach of scientific integrity, and while it does happen it is much rarer than is usually implied by the mainstream media. I get that it's a joke so fair enough but I don't think it is helpful in an age where science gives us so much and is so poorly regarded by the population at large.
Sorry for the rant.
You are REALLY good in your videos. Love the emotion you put into them....
Every single time someone references the LaBrea Tar Pits, I think of Bugs Bunny.
Joe, thanks for making the drive with me yesterday! This was the last video I watched. Just letting you know, I queued up your channel yesterday at 7am est. I let it go down the rabbit hole from Ocala, Florida all the way home to Schertz, Texas. Yes, you can listen to Joe for 13 straight hours and drive halfway across the country and not put a dent in your channel. Recap: You are a non ghost/Bigfoot believing, pro e-vehicle, hater of fossil fuel, quasi-capitalist half ass comedian, who will be one of the fellow Texans with me who survives when doomsday comes! It was an enjoyable day that I probably won’t repeat for sometime! Peace brother
"we could bring back so many species"
*Shows a sabertoothed tiger*
Yeah no thanks
No that would be cool
YAY! Thank you for lowering your background music so I can watch your awesome vids again!!!
I love when people try to say Jurassic Park was "anti-science"
...
You know, of all the reasons to bring back mammoths I didn't think cutting grass would be one of them.

A.I.: Hold my beer.

It's risky as hell because we know so little but de-extinction projects are necessary for our survival.
@jay I just imagine we bring back mammoths to find out they're telepathic and quickly take control of the whole world, and we humans do their bidding for the rest of our existence. The only way we rose to power originally was because of the asteroid strike that took the dinosaurs out.
X) Lol
Segue Master!!! That was Brilliant!! You must use that clip over and over again. It was amazing.

@10:00 but that niche hasn't been filled in a lot of places, like you said about the mammoth
The earth's temp has increased less than 1 degree Celsius between 1880 and today. Oh my God, run for the hills! You guys are aware than 10,000 years ago there was an ice sheet 1 km thick in the middle of North America. And that the ocean between England and Europe had people living in it back then--because the sea level was way lower. Climate changes all the time people! Don't fall for the people screaming that the sky is falling.
The sky is not falling....it's warming. You are a little slow, huh?
Exactly Brian!
@@williammoore9047 Human-made climate change suppresses the next ice age
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/01/160113160709.htm
Yes, Brian's "willful ignorance" is a force to be reckoned with.
@@jgalt308 You seem to think an ice age is preferable to warm climate? Okay, let's think your premise through. The average earth temperature in 2017 was 14.9 C. During the Jurassic period the average temp was 35 C. So I suppose the earth was so bad during the Jurassic that animals were small and scrawny because they couldn't find any food, correct? Explain it to me, Galt.
@@brianbagnall3029 Actually, your rhetorical question suggests an incorrect assumption regarding my
climate preferences as well as a set of choices that are essentially irrelevant with the effects that
will be available should the cause of the current climate change continue. Most reasonable
people would not choose "extinction" or the stages leading up to it, for a temporarily warmer climate
and the "hotter one" that will follow.
Secondly, while you seem to asking for an "explanation", it is clear that your "ignorance" is willful, and
whatever explanation you were given, wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference in your understanding
or your intellectual ability to change your opinion, based on the "facts".....because all of the information
you need is already available to you, and you can't be bothered to look for it on your own, or have already
rejected it, so any explanation I would have, would be a waste of my time.
However, you can use this link for ALL your questions....including the present one...
skepticalscience.com/co2-higher-in-past.htm
But you didn't bother with the previous link....so why would this one matter?
Considering the thylacine, it would be hysterical if they cloned it and then the next day a wild one trots out of the forest.
This sort of thing always happens

I didnt know extinct was a verb!

No, this could make things worse. Mammoths are out of food change right now but once they come back they’ll mess up with food chain, require more land, and produce more CO2
Bad idea

Well then couldn't we just eat them?
@Medicinal Blood I don't know, a little mammoth snout doesn't sound bad...as for whether or not people like it, it's either that or they can live with the mammoth farts.
Its fine, we can just unextict sabre tooth tigers to keep the mammoths in check.
