HONDA FIT/JAZZ - GK5 - Securing Spare Tire to Thule Canyon Cargo Basket for $3

  • In this video we will be installing a DIY spare tire carrier for a roof rack.
    I'm placing my spare tire on the roof rack to make room for my Solar Setup in the spare tire cavity.
    Name brand spare tire mounts can cost up to a $100, universal mounts average about $20.
    In this video I used a simple J-Bolt. A J-Bolt will cost $1-$3 depending on the size you need. I also placed some rubber hose around the hook of the J-Bolt, this will prevent any scratching where it is hooked around on the roof rack.
    With the money I saved I purchased a spare tire cover. It's a little tight but it's better then flying off.
    The J-Bolt was not my idea. Idea credit goes to @SilverRidgeRamblin

    Hi are your Thule roof rack bars 43 or 47”? Love your videos by the way !

    • @HondaFit4Adventure

      I guess I had a 53" cross bar.
      I wanted a little extra room on the sides for the water tank and such.
      I have since upgraded to a 60" cross bar.
      This was to make some room for the Kayak mount.

    Genius. I have the HR-V version and you convinced me to get the extension for my Thule basket and relocate my spare. Maybe I can fit a sub in the spare void? Also, how did you route your light bar cables through the antenna mount? Is this an easy DIY?

    • @HondaFit4Adventure
      @HondaFit4Adventure  2 роки тому +1

      I saw auxiliary gas tanks or fuel cells that fit into the spare tire void.
      Those are actually my Solar Panel cables going in through the antenna mount. It wasn't that hard.
      Here 's the video where I ran the solar panel cable through the antenna location. It's one of my older videos ua-cam.com/video/c2tnOGfgirU/v-deo.html
      Here's how I ran the lightbar on the roof rack.

    Sweet!! How is the noise when driving on hwy btw?

    • @HondaFit4Adventure
      @HondaFit4Adventure  Рік тому +1

      How is the noise with the roof rack set up? or how is the noise after adding the spare tire?
      They were both about the same. Nothing the radio wouldn't cover.
      I eventually expanded to a overland style roofrack build that included Solar panels, a roadshower, Spare gas, traction boards etc.
      ua-cam.com/video/zWGEmOhNHVo/v-deo.html
      Believe it or not the noise level wasn't much louder because I kept everything at a low profile.
      I later installed some sound deadening material in different sections at a time to record the results it made.
      I must say sound deadening the roof is a must for roof rack users. ua-cam.com/video/Zv6BcxVzr6M/v-deo.html
      In this video I was also using 53" cross bars? I replaced them with 60" cross bars to make room for a kayak.
      The 60" cross bar definitely makes some noise, even with out the kayak mount on it.

      @@JasonXBeats Yes. I purchased them through SuberBrightLEDS.com They are a U.S. based company, so they have a phone number and one that works...
      I made sure that they were plug and play and did not require any resistors or ballasts to make them work or to prevent hyperflashing.
      There selection of bulbs has decreased over the years.
      My first set was Cool 6500k / 4000lm with a 2 year warranty. One bulb quit working and was replaced under warranty. The other bulb quit working after the warranty but SBleds was nice enough to give me 50% off on my next purchase.

    ... now am not saying no because its a cool idea it adds space in the trunk
    👍 But I will suggest a full size spare
    The whole reason the stock spare is small is cause it's meant to safe space in trunk 🤷‍♂️

    • @HondaFit4Adventure
      @HondaFit4Adventure  3 роки тому +2

      You are correct, especially because I have a larger rim and tire now.
      I do rock a full size spare now but it stays inside the car until I can rearrange my roof rack.

      HondaFit4Adventure haha I should use the word “steel rims”, you know, like these European hatches, they are obsessed with steel rims(no plastic rim cover), but later I watched your rims changed episode, that sparco is also a great choice,

  • @elgransr
    @elgransr 4 роки тому +2

    If you are going to put the tire in the rack doesn't make more sense to put a normal wheel instead of a donut tire? Awesome fit btw

    • @HondaFit4Adventure
      @HondaFit4Adventure  4 роки тому +2

      Yes & No,
      Since I'm currently riding on stock suspension, rims and tires the stock factory doughnut will still do.
      It would be best practice to carry a full size spare, especially since this vehicle is intended for some rougher StatePark roads.
      If you already have bigger tires and/or a lift a full size spare is a must. A doughnut might not even touch the ground with a bigger tire and lift.
      That being said..... I do have rims and tires coming in soon with a full size matching spare :)

      @@sardonic_smile_8752 You could probably do 3 flat if played them out staggered.
      Yakima makes some extra large racks. Rhino rack also has a flat top rack with no side rails.
      Standing them up would probably be terrible on you fuel economy.
