    Jack, you definitely do know what you’re talking about! One thing I’ve learnt playing guitar is that we often know so much more than we think, theoretically speaking, it’s just a matter of putting all those bits and pieces together and joining the dots!

    What makes you one of my favorite guitarists Jack is that you are playing MUSIC, not just scales. Dan Toler was another guitarist doing the same, with great examples on Gregg Allman's solo albums. Well done Sir.

    It Em Dorian, sometimes flitting into E mixolydian to give that minor/ dominant E7 blues thing. Michael Schenker's solos to Rockbottom (UFO Stangers in the Night) is another great reference to that sound. Ted Nugent's Stranglehold too.

    Hey Jack. I would love for you to keep breaking down what you play. 100% you need to do a video on your thought process on playing in peach guitar videos. But I also think it's really cool if you talk to us more about music theory, or players that have inspired you then give us examples. You may not want to use a second camera but it would be really useful for close ups on examples of playing. Sharing is caring. You're a great player, excited to see more. Also Steve Lukather is one of my favourite guitarist. I have his signature guitar :D Take care

    Gotta say man, you’re one of my favourite players. I’m really enjoying your channel and I particularly like the way that, when you play, you really mean it! You stare at that camera and deliver the lick like you’re really sticking the knife in. Absolutely fabulous player.

    Incorporating the 6th scale degree is something that Steve's mentor (or "Sensei" as he calls him), Larry Carlton did (does) quite often. Robben Ford does it every now and again as well. I suspect Larry and Robben both got the idea from B. B. King who would play the 6th degree far more often than he played the b7th within a Minor pentatonic Scale framework or even within bursts of double stops (where the 5th is hammered onto the 6th as a grace note with the high root simultaneously played a minor 3rd above that - a lick which John Mayer frequently copies). It's interesting how Luke's phrasing and linear approach, which you have captured so well, sounds so far removed from B. B.'s, yet it captures that sweet soul vibe. Oh, and you DO know what you're talking about.

    • @jackgriffithsmusic
      @jackgriffithsmusic  4 роки тому

      Thanks Lee - I think you're right about the Carlton and BB influences. It's certainly a classic blues inflection but helps make Luke sound unique among a lot of his standard 'rock' contemporaries of the time. That's my take anyway. :-)

    Hey Jack, I'm curious about your approach to your Peach Gear Demos. Do you prep what your going to play or are you just improvising your playing sequences? If the former what kind of guidelines do you set for yourself to not wander off too far?

      @@jackgriffithsmusic I'll look forward to hear the R66 and your thoughts on it.
      Back to the Maz and Badger. So it wasn't that the badger is better than the maz? From watching your peach videos you seem a huge fan of the Vox EL34 styled amps. Hopefully you will be at work when I head to the store as I'd like to be shown how best to use this style of amp. I've played through a fender 65 deluxe exclusively for the past 12 years. Basically as long as I've been playing. I'm wanting a second amp now that's totally different to the fender.

    Hey Jack, curious what made you pick the Fillmore over the cali tweed? Seems you're mostly using it for a clean/ mild crunch pedal platform not necessarily for the higher gain capabilites of the fillmore

    Awesome channel Jack! Quick one, why opt for the Fillmore as opposed to a Two Rock for 6L6 cleans?

    • @jackgriffithsmusic
      @jackgriffithsmusic  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I felt the Fillmore has the best balance of convenience, tone and versatility. The Mesa cleans are smoother than a TR, too. I still have a TR on my list though!

    • @jaredfreestone6608
      @jaredfreestone6608 4 роки тому

      I have both a fillmore 50 and two Rock Studio Signature. The two rock is so much fatter sounding and more dynamic for cleans. But the Boogie is way more versatile. Both 👍

    Re the up until here "mystery amp", I chose not to make a guess beforehand, but yes I was surprised and taken aback. As a Mesa/Boogie user myself (Mk III Simulclass, fitted with an EV12L), I didn't quite recognise the Mesa flavour, but as you stated in an amp roundup in one of your Peach demos, the Fillmore is not in the Mk Series vein at all. Furthermore, I presume it has one of Mesa's modified Celestion loudspeakers in it , but please correct me if I'm wrong. The Celestion speakers sound very different to EV's - I was mildly shocked to hear that Joe Bonamassa removed the EV speakers from both of his Dumbles and retrofitted a Celestion speaker in each, although didn't he sell his Dumbles? Anyway, I digress. The thick, rich tone you have achieved using your Suhr sounds delectable. I know that some guitarists don't go for Mesa/Boogies - or just "Boogies" (there's a historical branding and marketing difference to be considered and your Boogie is less of a "Mesa" in spirit, essence and tone), but your Fillmore sounds as good as any vintage/classic/boutique amp in my opinion. By the way, I once had an in-depth conversation with the late, great Mike Casswell about output valves (tubes) and he was 100% a 6L6 guy, as am I (although my 1987 Simulclass model has EL34s as the Class A foundation). I recognised the sweet tone of your amp as being not EL84s, which never sound sweet to me, although they're great for sizzle and chime; 6V6's are known for their sweetness and I might have guessed you had a 6V6-equipped amp, but I would have been wrong. Incidentally, I've spoken to Den Cornell at length about valves, and I read some articles written by top UK valve amp designers, and they all say that it's a misconception that 6L6's have this sound and EL34s have that sound etc. They all stress that the circuit design can be such that, within certain technical parameters, almost any valve can be used to achieve any tonality (Den Cornell once let me play through an EL34-equipped design of his that I swear sounded just like a big, fat Fender sound). Sorry to ramble on. Your tone is sublime and your tasteful playing is matched perfectly by the Boogie! Keep up the great work.

    • @jackgriffithsmusic
      @jackgriffithsmusic  4 роки тому

      It's certainly a unique amp, I believe it's Mesa's love-letter to a few different classic amp designs, in one box. It originally appealed to me for it's Dumble-esque, 'controllable Fender' sort of character, but I've since discovered it's way more versatile than that. 6L6s are arguably the most balanced and malleable power tube. Yes, it's fitted with a Mesa Black Shadow, which is a tweaked, high-power Celestion design. Glad you like the amp as much as I do!

    • @LeeJHodgson
      @LeeJHodgson 4 роки тому

      @@jackgriffithsmusic As a long time Mesa/Boogie user (since 1987), I can confirm that their versatility is remarkable - I'm perhaps known mainly as a country picker, but I play pop, rock, blues, jazz, funk, fusion etc. and my Mk III covers it all; and I almost never use FX with it on gigs, except for one country band I work with where they like a bit of delay and chorus, so I connect my Rocktron Replifex to the Send & Return loop). I've worked with so many powerful drummers and I've discovered that using FX invariably results in you getting lost in the mix. Which leads me to second what you note in your demo, i.e., a Boogie will always cut through the mix - it's no good having otherwise "cool" tones that don't cut through the mix (project). I used to put it mainly down to the EV12L loudspeaker (which is not only super-efficient but also lets you hear far more detail, even at low-level, than most loudspeakers). About 15 years ago I wrote to Randall Smith about how much I loved the EV12L speaker and I just couldn't understand why, in the 90s and 00's hardly any guitarist was using them, and he said that it was his favourite guitar loudspeaker [which he had personally helped develop], but he needed to give players what they wanted. Jensen speakers are really nice, but I'm not sure I like the way that they tend to sound different every time you pick somewhere different; they're a bit random and I'm not sure I appreciate the inconsistency; however, I'm a massive Jeff Beck fan and I think Jeff would (does) couple well with a Jensen speaker because, with the greatest of respect, it's the unpredictability that I love about him and his ever-changing tones and timbres. Anyway, I'm rambling again. It's because speakers affect the tone and dynamics so much and, wrapping up, the Black Shadow speaker in your Boogie provides a great variety of tones in a flattering way (the EV12L sounds great, but it can be rather revealing and unflattering; yet, I love the way it makes me try to play cleaner and more soulfully). I look forward to more from you on your UA-cam channel. keep up the great work.
