Native Texas plan gardener here. Thank you for being transparent and the information . It is highly appreciated for someone like me trying to get into the business.
Thanks for such honest approach to your business. In your videos, you show that you're not scared of sharing your knowledge. May Almighty God increase your sustenance. Thanks for teaching us.
mike wow! great information my jaw hit the floor when you said a dollar for that here in washington thats 5$ at any nursery in my area i payed 100$ for a pair of 8ft fruit trees and thought i made out like a bandit. dont be afraid to charge more because your main competetitor is amazon as far as spectation goes! people happily pay double everything you say on a website where you dont even see where its coming from!
I’m glad to hear you mention that there is a growing period of time before you sell after going into a bigger container. I get so tired of buying a 2 or 3 gallon container with basically a nice bushy but qt size size plant - you get it home to plant and you have a tiny root system and a bunch of bark. It has gotten me in trouble, but I’ve taken to pulling gently on plants if I have any doubt - if they just pull up - not rooted in. If good resistance - rooted in at least for awhile. I prefer to be able to dump it over and have it slide out intact. BUT that will really get you in trouble if it just spills out and you are caught. It shouldn’t but they will get pretty mad caught selling plants before they are ready to be sold. Just because a $5 plant is sitting in a 7 gallon container - doesn’t mean it’s an 85 dollar value. I have nursery folks give me all kinds of reasons why this has happened - usually “you can’t get good help - those shouldn’t even be in the retail section” - you go back the next week or two and they still sit there. There are many games - know them but don’t use them. There is a lot of not so ethical folks out there. Mike is giving you the straight story - listen to him and you won’t go wrong and end up with no business. But also don’t underprice - you have to get your cost back and a decent profit but you don’t want to try and build a house, put a pool in, send your kids to college, whatever - off 1 season. Be patient - it takes a few years to build a business - if you want to do it in 3-6 months - you will be pretty disappointed in just about everything.
you have amazing stuff. your videos really inspire me to get going on my edible plants nursery. I cant afford to populate my nursery with buying stuff, but I have plenty of starter genetics to clone; aronia, hazels, kiwi, etc.
Hello Mike, Once you have these tiny rootings in a small pot (what size?), how do you care for them through the Winter? We are located in northern Illinois. Thank you for your expertise !
Excellent perspective. You mentioned that there were competitors in your area. Are they close by and do they take a similar $4.97 - $5.97 philosophy like you do? Similar plant size/container size? Thanks Mike.
thanks for all your gardening tips mike really usefull .hey to save your voice and make a better quality vidio you could do to get a radio mike attatched to yourself you wont look back .Ant from wales UK
So I am new at this but you root the cuttings around June 1st put them in pots around when they root or by fall then let them grow 1 year and sell them the following spring is that correct?
Sir you are a humble gentlemen . Please stay humble we need more humble and honest hardworking peoples in this world just like you! God bless you ! May God gives you healthy and long life! Thanks a Trillion of your kindness!🙏🙏
In Northern Illinois, how soon can an approximate 2 inch arborvitae be planted in the ground? Or is it best to keep in a small container until it is ... how large? Thanks again!
Children in local school could benefit from mike and his nursery. Is it possible for local county councils and the education department to get behind and support sustainable living within local communities and garden shows??? Local communities need farming education for the young generation to heal and grow with learning and appreciating green food and plants. God bless.
you know whats so sad, I go into the big box stores, your 4 or 5 dollar pot with a plat taken from a cutting 1.5 to 2 years ago is 9 bucks now the soil is dry and honestly the plan might not make it to the next spring. But they have a warranty, bring it back for one year. Hey in one year, do you think I still ahve the receipt or even know where it is? No But If i go into a necessary small business you get a good deal, and even what looks like a weak plant if you wait a few years you ahve what turns out to be a quality large plant because even shabby they didn't let the soil dry out. I only wished I had the knowledge you have for know what plant is what I'd open my own back yard nursery and I have a retail sales tax id number already. I've even got the room to grow some stuff. I'd do Perennials I like Annuals but I like stuff that keeps coming back each year and I don't have to dig up to over winter inside.
Could I use old drawers for propagating shrubs from cuttings? The container that you show with the golden pearl willow looks a bit like a drawer. I wish you were closer to me, I pay so much money for plants-the one you showed that you sell for $5.97, I have paid up to 17 dollars for. Thanks for all of your videos.
Thanks mike, saw your add CL today and what a great way to promote your bizz.. so because I am always looking for a great small grower to work for I got wrapped up researching all about your nursery. I will now pass on the info. with like friends .please make sure and just don't drop a qt. pot into a GA, and charge the higher price. Tell your viewers that, I know you remember those days!! thanks so much for your tips and to give the novice a behind the sense of something's of what a grower does. As I sure you must know I am very well versed, O.S.U, A.T.I. and hard knocks schooling of the the green world...... thanks much.. Bev
Hey Mike, love your videos. How do you Winter over all of these pots? I know you don't have a greenhouse, do you dig these plants/pots in or mulch them in? I am in Central Wisconsin (zone 5a/4b). If you don't mulch them don't the roots freeze out and kill the plant? Thanks for your help, Ken
What I do is just put all my container plants on the ground where they will get sun and where they're pretty much blocked from a lot of wind. Then I just put leaves in front of the front row of plants to protect the exposed row. The plants will actually root into the ground a little during winter, which is ok because in the spring, most likely you will want to pot them up anyways to a bigger container. Hope this helps some people.
One thing I don’t believe I have seen addressed. If you buy say large shrub to make cuttings off after planting in your garden for a year or so - make sure you aren’t propagating a patented plant. You must get a license from the breeder to do and sell. It is illegal until the patent expires. Normally the tags will say patent pending and a number. I know of someone who did a bunch of this so they could undersell everyone - they paid big time including time in jail. Not to mention they weren’t reporting income, paying taxes, not doing taxes for employees, workers comp etc and on top spraying pesticides without a license. Once that first suit was over - he was getting hit by county, state, federal, etc. Not worth it. A couple of their competitors who didn’t appreciate the unethetical practice and reported the guy to the breeder. When a plant is patented it costs a lot more to buy for resell and .you have to pay royalties. It is pretty expensive to patent a plant and it is only done with super nice plants that may have taken 10-15 years to breed and produce so a breeder isn’t appreciative of those who go around the system. There are thousands and thousands of non patented plant so you don’t need to be unethical. This means no propagation - breeding for seeds, cuttings, clones, tissue culture grafting, nothing.
First off, Mike addressed this on his website. Secondly, this does not include seeds! You can certainly take a seed from a patented plant and grow it. A seed only has 50% of the known parents genetic material.
makes sense...guy goes to jail for growing a plant and selling...lawbreaking illegal immigrant deported 5 times and then shoots innocent woman in the back gets off scott free! got to love it! www.google.com/amp/www.sfexaminer.com/upcoming-supreme-court-decision-impact-federal-garcia-zarate-case/amp/

I will probably never have a nursery, but you have inspired me to multiply what I've been growing, some things, over thirty years. Thank you.
I find your channel so informative and just simply could watch you with ease.
Thank you so much!
Probably the most interesting nursery video I've seen ever! Thank you Mike.

Cheers Mike, I'm hoping to emulate your business here in England...so, fingers crossed...you are an inspiration.
Is there an updated version of this? This is from 2015, 7+ years ag, hello Inflation prices. So what are they selling for now??
