English is my second (or even third language). As an Asian immigrant in Canada, many of us have to deal with "accent" not only in English but also among Chinese immigrants (ie. immigrants from HK, Taiwan, and different parts of China). One thing I learned is that being aware of your "physiology and emotion" is one of the most important things in managing "accent".
When I feel "nervous/anxious" or "too excited", I tend to raise my pitch, tighten my vocal chord, and speak relatively FAST. And when I speak fast, my accent tends to be more pronounced. So paying attention to how you feel is one way to keep your accent in check. And stop worrying about how others may see or think of you when you talk with a clear accent. This negative perception of yourself is what often made one feels "anxious". So slow down your speech next time and you will find that your accent is much reduced with improved articulation.
great advice. i also thought the same way, but don’t know how to slow down.
@@MrLuhuazhao You are welcome. I talk at a very fast pace in English and Chinese.. lol Sometimes I picture myself talking to a 70-year-old lady who can't hear well. So you have to slow down and pronounce clearly. Or, you can imagine yourself teaching little kids. You would slow down and pronounce clearly to get your messages across. And just "being aware" of your speed of talking can help you slow down significantly.
You will find that when you slow down your speech, your speak much more clearly with reduced accent.
I spent 3 hours a day working to dilute my accent as a high schooler. I would stand in front of the mirror and retrain myself to pronounciate words like that of an "American." Little did I know that I was not showing up authentically...I was putting more effort into acclimating versus showcasing my knowledge. What a waste! Now I love delivering a presentation with my accent because it gives me a segway into introducing who I am and removing the self-imposed anxiety I may experience. Kudos on another fantastic video.
Accent is a part of who you are, and who you were. We should not feel shame for our accent. However, we can still practice the standard English pronunciation because the better expression the better self satisfaction, in my opinion, as well as the respect to the language we are using.
Dr. your message fell from heaven today. Thank you!
Wow, i'm blown away by your videos. I am as anti-Corporatist, anti-hierarchy as can be, however your utter logic, compassion and reason are teaching me so much and your videos are applicable to any human context.
I love Dr Grace' s class because the effects you make can help people from different backgrounds to be able to achieve their best. Thank you Dr. Grace!
I agree with you. Why I admire and respect Dr Grace is she explains without patronising Non-natives individuals.
Love your English. Speak very clearly and understandable. Thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing this. I have a very thick Filipino accent and I'm struggling with my pronunciation. This video make me feel better.
Definitely I got an AHA moment! Thank you!
Grace is so great. She does still have an accent, my American husband also said that he can tell she is an immigrant. However her communication is super clear and effective. Grace you are so right. Sometimes, as immigrant, I felt I have a little disadvantage on communications than native speakers. I am Chinese immigrant also with accent, my husband laughed about my accent sometimes, not in a mean way, he thinks they are very cute. Grace is an excellent coaching, she is very right. Now I feel better about my accent. We just need to be more confident, try to pronounce words clearer, learn to deliver the message effectively, needs practices. Thank you so much!
Dr Grace you are awesome. You are making inspiring videos. Wow. So educational and life changing !! God bless you !!
Thank you for the kind words, Ken! I appreciate you dropping a comment. Welcome to my channel and I hope you find my videos helpful.
Thank you so much for touching on the accents! Here in the south (Florida) low class whites are critical of the foreign accent, but the educated Americans are cool with the difference. So, stop being a low class white, be an intelligent and proud American. I address this to whites, bcz I haven't experienced the accent intolerance from minority groups for the past 10 years in the U.S. Thank you and peace to all!
It works internally too. In my country people from other regions than our main economic center habe a different accent too, and they too are sometimes facing trouble because of it.
I bet you have anecdotes like that as well. Like if you have a complete hillbilly accent people in investment banking aren't taking you as seriously.
Amazing, thank you😊
Dr. Lee, thanks for your sharing. I love your accent. Surprisingly you came from Hong Kong. Many people challenged Hong Kong-style English. You make us (Hong Konger) shine. I have learnt a lot from your video.
Super happy to find this channel from a fellow Hong Konger. It has been super insightful and informative. I am starting my job as an executive assistant soon and I have been living in Germany for 7 years now, I gotta say most of the time when people made a comment on my accents were usually the people who are not native speakers.
Thank YOU Dr. Grace ❤I strangled for many years with that nowadays I don’t care any longer however I believe this message soothes a lot of people that thought like me 😊
Thank you so much for this topic, Dr Grace. I appreciate for making specifically on this issue.
I hope to see you in person Dr. Grace Lee.❤
Wow!!! I am also from HKG❤
Nice vid. Keep up the exceptional work.
I appreciate the support, Ethan!
Thanks for such a very helpful video.
I’m from HK too. Love your English!
Who is driving you, Dr. Grace😆?
Thank you ma'am
An interested lecture❤
😂😂This is so funny because I am from the east and it's hard to understand some native American from other states.
Dr Grace I hope you were not driving while filming this video 😮
Eyes glued to the camera. It looks like you’re recording in a van and you’re in the middle seat.
make me worry when you were driving and looking at camera , not road
or I guess that is AI correction to make it seems like you are looking at camera but you were not
Please help me to improve my English 🙏
I hate mine too 😅
The comment Dr. Lee says that "people don't see you through their eyes, but they see you through yours" is interesting. I wonder what she really means.
I can't concentrate on this video coz I'm wondering who is driving!!!
The video is flipped, so from a north American perspective it looks like I'm driving, but I'm not!
Are you driving?
just use iphone mic to see if iphone can understand your own speech.
I appreciate you sharing your tips and experience!
Im really glad I discovered your channel! I will be learning a lot, that I know.
You’re a very strong communicator Dr. Grace Lee🤍
