I happen to have two P700 printers at home at the moment and when i pull a cartridge out of one and put it in the other it shows the same ink level as the one it came from. This tells me that the printer is writing the ink level to the chip on the cartridge. I'm aware that for all but the European models that you cant use third party inks and im wondering why, is it because the chips have an ID number and the ID number and the ink level stored on the chip is also stored in the printer and if the ID and level information dont match then it wont accept the cartridge? Hmmmmm
