I've had El Cap for about a year, now, rehabbing from a wrist injury. I l-o-v-e the sounds you can get out of this unit. Now I'm back in a band and we'll be gigging…so I starting thinking multiple presets. But no matter how many of these great multi-effect/preset units I try out, I just can't get the same tone as what El Cap gives me. It's a beautiful unit. I'm really into your demos. Thanks.
I found my new delay for my new BluGuitar rig. Heads up campers, dual function knobs, hold down both buttons, cool Spring reverb added to delays on the time knob. This gives me reverb and delay and this puppy is so much like a real tape delay with all the bad tape and mechanical flaws. Strymon rules the delay realm! Not to mention Mike Hermans is an amazing improv guitarist. I look for his demos on anything I like as he gets closest to what you can really do with them.
YESSSS FINALLLY.. I have been waiting for this vid long ago, got my hands on one yesterday, and I absolutely love this pedal, but I still dont know how to use it... thnaks mike you are the best
ordered one a couple of minutes ago. i'm just too tired of chosing delay, and planning my pedalboard. and i'll just give it a try. with favourite switch i got 2 el cap's in one. so, let's see how good this thing is.
There is that capability already. They have apps you can access through IPads and laptops nowadays. It's a cool thing, but it just does not feel the same to me. But then again, as a violinist, it's just too much work for me and I just love pedals for their analog sound (specifically Strymon) mixed with digital processing versus just a well crafted digital program.
i just bought this pedal and the flashing tap light drives me insane. I noticed in this demo the tap light is not flashing. Is there a way to turn it off or was the bulb disconnected for the demo?
Thanks slimigan. I've got the Strymon Favorite switch which does the trick for one preset. Have to say, though, that the Matthews looks cooler. I was thinking of more than one preset. Since my post I've found that it's easy to toe either the Mix or Rate knob on the unit, so it's like I can have the favorite handy along with a poor man's expression pedal.
Hey man, did you by the way tried the catalinbread echorec ? What is you impression is the strymon el capistan better then CB? To me Strymon EC sounds more clear and crystal then the other one ... ? thanks
A quick question for the Prymaxe tester, can you tell me that you on a more organic and warmer in term of sound between the Strymon El Capistan and Empress Tape Delay. Thank you in advance for your answer
just bought the el capistan today. and i bought it on impulse. anyways, here's a question reg the video. 1) why is the TAP button not bllinking at the first part of the demo? that's not defective is it? 2) i cannot copy/imitate the sound at 3:29. that's the main reason why i bought this pedal. i fell in love with that sound. please advise. tah.
Still waiting for one that I can tolerate. Been using n EP-3 since the early '70's. Not a one that's even CLOSE. But if you need tap tempo ........(don't get a tempo tantrum.)
It's 2020 and I come to you from this weird utopian future we're we all have to wear masks to leave the house but on the upside guitar pedals are fucking amazing.
Is this pedal, worth upgrading from a mxr carbon copy? given that, I'm not much of a delay guy, however I do enjoy playing it, once a while. Also what is the main tonal difference between the analog and a tape delay?
Utsab Gurung if u can its definitely "an upgrade". It will provide u different flavour that u will soon can't live without.. Worth it, go for it man. Look at used market like me coz im cheap :p
Lol. Bought it already. I see why the carbon copy didn't work for me. The el capistan is so smooth and blends in nicely with your lead playing. Can't live without it now.
If money were no option, is the Timeline your obvious choice for a delay pedal? I really just play at home - often with a drummer - so I can imagine finding myself overwhelmed by the many parameters the Timeline offers. Having said that, I'd rather be able to dial in my own sound than, say, use something like TC Electronics' Alter Ego X4 that has a deliberately-tailored sound which doesn't give you control over the level of the delay's modulation. Basically I've spent the last two hours watching UA-cam videos of delay pedals and now I feel like I'm in the twilight zone! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I've sat down at with the timeline and the timeline and flashback x4 for an hour. and the timeline had wayyyyy to many tweakable parameters hidden behind the screen that really bugged me. but the sound is good. the alter ego on the other hand is intuitive and easy to use but all those 12 presets sound very similar. that is because they are all based of a 2290 pristine delay, then filtered and modulated and saturated until they sound different. when I heard the demos I could notice the difference but when I finally sat down and realised they all sound pretty darn similar. if vintage echo is your thing then you can't go wrong with the EP CAPISTAN
Can't pay attention to the pedal... Giant Steps too engaging... oh... phew. Simple minor chords again... I'm back...where were we? Oh yes. This tape simulation rules.

Get yourself an external favourites pedal for your el cap, something like what Matthews Effects makes...
Fucking John Coltrane on guitar? That's amazing. You guys are awesome
Great playing
I came for the demo. I stayed for Giant Steps. Way to up the game. =)
Might I say, A FUCKING AWESOME VERSION OF GIANT STEPS
We really appreciate that
Thanks for checking it out!
That Giant Steps is SICK.
great demo and awesome playing mate
This is the first video i've seen the youtube tape option on. That's just too good to be true.
Thanks!
That intro melody was incredible!
ROXANE! The prettiest version ever.

Yes
You'll love it. It's amazing!
It's Giant Steps by John Coltrane
that is THE coolest version of giant steps I have ever heard!
Thanks! I appreciate it
-Mike
Ha! It is Giant Steps. Took me a second to hear. That's impressive taking the original song and boiling it down to this. Very nice!
THanks
btw... awesome take on Giant steps did't expect it all,
Thanks!
-Mike
Jajajaja everybody ignored the pedal and preferred the version of Giant Steps. the truth is super
YESSSS FINALLLY.. I have been waiting for this vid long ago, got my hands on one yesterday, and I absolutely love this pedal, but I still dont know how to use it... thnaks mike you are the best
That Giant Steps... Bravo.
Wow! Amazing Giant Steps version...incredible.
Anybody noticed the Roxanne arrangement at 1:25 ?!!?... Amazing!
Best guitar arrangement / pedal reviews ever!
BRILLIANT Giant Steps version
The beauty in this pedal is the long throw repeat wise IMHO. You have to max it to self oscillate which gives you a lot of room to play with.
Thanks for watching!
That progression!!!! WOW!

That's why I chose it! Strymon is taking huge steps forward!
-Mike
I come here for the gear but stay for the playing
Great stuff.
Wow I love that take on giant steps.
What a nice Riff with the tele! Nice job... and really nice pedal!!!!!!!!!!
Cool Gigantic Steps? Trane would be proud
The Giant Steps of El Capistan ;-)
i just bought this pedal and the flashing tap light drives me insane. I noticed in this demo the tap light is not flashing. Is there a way to turn it off or was the bulb disconnected for the demo?
Me too... I put black tape over it
Changing the secondary functions
I have one of those big Boss volumes. It looks like a spaceship but is built like a tank....
So excellent ;-)
I'm either in love with the pedal, or the guitarist. Not sure which.
That rendition of Roxanne is inspiring.
Thanks slimigan. I've got the Strymon Favorite switch which does the trick for one preset. Have to say, though, that the Matthews looks cooler. I was thinking of more than one preset.

haha! THanks!
THAT GIANT STEPS! BEAUTİFUL!
best review on net
Yeah slow down Roxanne!!! Great bro!!!
Roxanne? Beautiful interpretation.
Nice! Thought I'd try something different
Good to switch it up, right?
Hey man, did you by the way tried the catalinbread echorec ? What is you impression is the strymon el capistan better then CB? To me Strymon EC sounds more clear and crystal then the other one ... ? thanks
Interesting arrangement of Coltrane's classic.
Roxanne
Great pedal, btw which volume pedal do you use at the second demo?
Mike,
It does not appear that the Timeline can really do what the El Capistan can do. What do you think?
Giant Steps
A quick question for the Prymaxe tester, can you tell me that you on a more organic and warmer in term of sound between the Strymon El Capistan and Empress Tape Delay.

Nice playing.
Sometimes I watch these for the music. The first tune is shakin.
"Giant Steps" by John Coltrane. Considered one of the toughest jazz tunes to solo on.
@PrymaxeVintage when you're pressing down the tap for a couple seconds in the second half of the demo, what are you doing?
just bought the el capistan today. and i bought it on impulse.
anyways, here's a question reg the video.
1) why is the TAP button not bllinking at the first part of the demo? that's not defective is it?
2) i cannot copy/imitate the sound at 3:29. that's the main reason why i bought this pedal. i fell in love with that sound. please advise. tah.
Pretty sure they are photos of the pedal
and research dotted 8th delay
Joseph Owen
whats your suggested setting for the el capistan to produce a dotted 8th sound
+zapantalambda the way you get a dotted eight delay is by playing in a certain groove. it's hard to explain
1 (step) and 2 (step) and 3,4,1 (step all) ;)
This or the DIg?
Wow not one answer, oh well had them both and this is truly an amazing unit, the DIG was just ok imo
Quick question: Can you use the looper function and the delay at the same time. In other words, can you record delayed stuff?
Still waiting for one that I can tolerate. Been using n EP-3 since the early '70's. Not a one that's even CLOSE. But if you need tap tempo ........(don't get a tempo tantrum.)
Oh.. Is it bad that I like his version better than the original? Lol
Is it 2010 again?
It's 2020 and I come to you from this weird utopian future we're we all have to wear masks to leave the house but on the upside guitar pedals are fucking amazing.

what song is that on the Tele, at 1:26?
How did you make the sound at 7:48?
Roxanne by Police
OMGSHH!!!! (1:50 - 1:57) someone please write out this progression!!!!!!!
+Dalvawi92 i will work on it, just give me a couple weeks
+Dalvawi92 It's John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." Brilliantly done.
0:00 to 0:02 sing.... daddy says lets go poop... lol
Or rolling in his grave. I hope not though! Thanks!
-Mike

You guys gave me a Japanese seizure at 1:18.
