Recorded in WNYC's Jerome L. Greene Performance Space on May 23, 2011.
goddam she is so bad-ASS! drumming singing and pedals
There is nothing on the face of the earth like a tUnE-yArDs show. Nothing. Jaw-dropping.
How is that audience just sitting there? I see a few headbobs but I'd be on my feet fully jamming out!
YESSSS totally agree pbs brought me here, the crowd was officially here
JD Calabrese Agreed. Kinda made it seem like they were there for a different reason altogether than to enjoy this kind of performance.
Merrill is super talented and awesome. the end.
omg what the ACTUAL fuck, that middle part mustve been SO ridiculous to rehearse but it was SO perfect. amazing job. SO amazing
I find it incredible that anyone can sit through this shit. When I saw her live, it was impossible not to headbang. It just seems like seeing her sitting down would be physically uncomfortable.
I love how cathartic the song gets halfway through!
Wow. She is spectacular
I really appreciate the female singers who come around and aren't afraid to express their masculine energy.
This track made the best scene in Letterkenny
I had heard the song multiple times, but it was that scene in Letterkenny that made me take notice
@@brettmurray5297 It made that scene go hard AF.
I didn't think it was possible to sit so still to a song as lively as this one!
It's amazing how this matches the actual track on the album. Unreal.
love love love her!!! what a magic voice!!!!
The most sensible and thoughtful UA-cam comment I've seen in years. I think Merrill is very attractive and powerful.
Its like Adam Ant meets Allison Moyet and Joan Armatrading! I love it!
C'est le truc musical le plus incroyable que j'ai pu voir dans ma vie. Je pense
On a more relevant note more tUnE-yArD videos makes me a happy young man.
What a piece to reproduce live. Great!
Amazing performance! i love studio 360, for introducing me to the Tuneyards the only time i think i've heard them on the radio. my requests to the local station go unnoticed :(
Just saw them with Arcade Fire and they played a great show, I really enjoy this group.
Musical. Genius. She completely changes the game.
This in incredible.
I can't believe how good this is.
She is absolutely bloody excellent.
She is a dreamboat!
"Garbus" stands for GENIUS. Amazing artist. Truly Amazing.
This gives me goose bumps.
AMAZING !!! truly amazing and refreshing....
i dont know how i got here, but Wow.. best band ever.. now to wipe blood off my ears
This is amazing and mindblowing and amazing and mindblowing.
The only time I have ever enjoyed a sax. This girl is talented.
Simply stellar.
Incredible.
just found these guys. she is so creative and the band is tight!
her music is a revelation
sick bass riffs in this song
i love her
Finalmente ! encontrei algo bom e criativo!
Crushing.
I didn't get it at first, honestly. But then it began to groove, and it made me happy.
Love her and loved her when she was with Sister Suvi.
I love that woman.
They did a great job in Roskilde 2012, and got very good reviews.
haha IM GONNA SEE THESE GUYS WHEN THEY COME TO AUSTRALIAAAAA! yay!
Smashing
They're cool.
2 saxophones? briliant!! makes me wanna rethink everything about what makes a good live band:/
This sounds very King Crimson to me.
Merrill said she was influenced by early 70s Crimson.
Now I'm disappointed for missing out on her shows. Amazing.
This is the shit live! Those horns are on point!!!
WOW!
i had this lp for 6mnth never seen a pic just heard her voice & wi lungs like that i assumed she was black?..... lps fantastic!!!
Wow!
this shit makes me dance muh asss off. I fucking love you tune-yards.
What's a boy to do if he'll never be a gangsta?
Anger in his heart, but he'll never be a gangsta
If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound, ooh!
What's a boy to do if he'll never be a rasta?
Singing from his heart, but he'll never be a rockstar
If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound
Bang-bang, oi! Never move to my hood, cause danger is crawlin' out the wood
Bang-bang, boy-ee
This live is pretty crazy.
She was a badass at Newport
My. Gawd.
She's a bad ass.
holy freegin oh my yes
@Poprocksian I used the term to mean "projective", not male. My point is that every female has masculine energy and every male has feminine energy.
Agreed
From 03,10 to 03,30 Merrill DJ :)
I'm not a fan of her music, but she has an incredibly diverse voice. It impresses me. And I also agree with the guy talking about how that audience was horrible. They may as well have been performing to trees.
I thought she was a guy! Okay I personally think she takes the cake for beautiful vocals, talent, and uniqueness. I love this song!! I love this performance of this song and I'm in love.
something very vulnerable about this that makes people uncomfortable.
Reminds me of sitting on the tram with a chip butty and coke!
Please tell me they have a karaoke version!
Soundtrack for a indie movie 🍿
to the haters: hear the death bells for your mainstream and substream music... hate it on your way out.
Merrill is a nice name.
♪♫Bang-bang, boy-ee, never move to my hood, cause danger is crawlin' out the way...♪♫
He's picking up the slack of the woman in the checkered top at 3:05, who looks like she's thinking, "I wonder if I left my oven on. Hmmmmm. Surely I turned it off before I left the house."
Reminds me of Fugazi and the the Sugar babes.
That was cool. Weird & irritating but cool. Maybe thats what they're going for. I like it.
She-he sings awesome
1:30, that is totally John Hodgman sitting stage right behind the mic stand.
Wow, good eye!!
Wow, good eye!!
the sax isn't off key :) song is in E flat minor and they're just playing different modes of that scale. It's funny that the bass didn't sound off key considering half the time they're playing the same notes or the same scale just in a different order.
@amarr1 Who did I generalize?
Holy. Fuck.
imagine her on a full drum set dayyum qurlll
3:30 this song can only by performed with your dad's wallet on the snare.
@stefanoo312
what does it matter?
is that Marina Abramovic at 1:35???
Is that John Hodgman sitting in the corner at 1:38 and nodding his head?
@NighttimeBird Ignore grammar mistakes.
dude! her voice! wtf! its like amazing! it might be weird but to me her being so good makes her really hot... im like in love w/ her
You're right. Her being masculine makes her masculine. Why are you so butt-hurt? He wasn't insulting her. He was just stating a fact. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You have to admit though, she is pretty masculine. I mean, dude, she's bigger than I am haha. With that aside, I agree with everything you said. She isn't a bad vocalist, and definitely not a bad drummer.
Applause all around for degenerating to name calling!
Is that John Hodgman hiding in the corner at 1:37?
@Poprocksian Masculine just means traits typical of a male. Blame history (and people's stubbornness to change their ideals) for the fact that she fits the "stereotype" of masculine for some. On that note, I don't think she seems masculine at all -- I think she and her voice are both beautiful and raw :)
Fuckin sick!
thats a man !!!!
This is exactly how the album recording sounds - that's ridiculous!
In what universe could this odious noise be considered worth the burning of fossil fuels to produce the power and electricity for the sound equipment, recording, stage lighting, lunch and dinner for the band and audience and so on? Glass would refuse to shatter for this. I only care because I work in a setting in which I am subjected to this band almost daily. If only I had the courage to gouge my ear drums out!
@Whitebuffaloisborn maybe they didn't wanna interrupt her intricate looping??
@madsketcher While I can see what you're saying, why call it "masculine" energy? Why is it that any time a woman is powerful-- in voice, in presence, in body-- they are man-like?
In the spiritual faiths/ meta world masculine and feminine energy are things that all b people have both of and just have diff ratios. So I know when I say masculine energy it refers to a series of characteristics that older generations labeled “man” and therefor masculine . Masculine and feminine exist regardless they are just separate concepts from anatomical “male” and “female”
this is fucking sikk!
I thought this song was imposible to play live, i was dead wrong
did anyone else realize that the usernames of the two top comments are about fear????
@stefanoo312
Her name is Merrill Garbus, and as weird as it is that she could almost pass for a guy the first time seeing her, she is actually attractive.
