This kinda reminds me of Sonic Riders. Where you had to complete both the hero and thieves arc but the thieves arc ended with you fighting as the heroes anyway.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they used Nappa because they wanted somebody who was a massive brute. Obviously they had other options, like Recoome, but the dialog with Nappa is so funny. They probably picked Nappa for the hilarity.
